Hair life cycle?

Hi all, Just a general question on the hair life cycle. Obviously all people shed some hair all the time and it is replaced, and not every hair that falls out falls out for good. In general, how long does it typically take when a normal hair falls out, for a new one to sprout in its place? And in the process of hair loss, do the hairs typically come in progressively thinner, or just fall out and stay out. ?

When hairs fall out naturally (at the end of the telogen stage) a new hair is already growing, it's what actually causes the existing hair to fall out. The assumption some people make though is that the new hair will be instantly visible even though it won't even break the surface of the scalp for a while and even then it will take some months to make a cosmetic difference, depending on the length of your existing hairs.

and in male pattern baldness hair comes back weaker and weaker with every hair cycle, they don't just fall out and never come back, at least they don't at the start. If the hairs that are falling out aren't obviously miniaturised then it's most likely normal shedding.

Normal hair life is anywhere from 2 to 6 years. This is the reason, you don't see many long hair tails on any individual even if he/she has not cut his/her hair for man years. By the time, each hair strand reached certain length and at maximum 6 years, it simply falls out. There is also a theory that follicle goes dormant for few weeks to about 4 months before the new hair cycle/formation starts and the new hair sprouts. Thus, you may have no visible hair in a follicle/surface for few months
