my body isn't too hairy, but considering i'm asian i am definitely on the hairier side (i don't think any of my asian friends have hair on their legs).

anyway, i've noticed that the body hair has gotten a more pronounced in the last year or so. the little patch around my navel and chest have grown. i was wondering if this is a sign of anything? i thought one of the sides of using finasteride (or anything that reduces dht) is that it lowers growth in body hair. so maybe this tells me i have a large concentration of dht in my system? i just want your thoughts on it

I'm confused, growing more body hair is a sign of a lot of DHT?

I'm Caucasian and have never been that hairy, but over the last year and a half, my leg hair has grown more/gotten thicker, and I've gotten more of a "happy trail" below my navel. I'm 20 years old though, so I figured I should obviously be getting more hairy at some point.

I don't think it's a side effect of propecia, but of course anything is possible. How old are you? I'm 25 and I've been getting hairier and hairier. It seems like most bald and balding people have loads of body hair.

of course im not a scientist. and i know that even if what i say is true, it cant be the complete story. anyway, i believe that an abundance of body hair often equates with the levels of testosterone. i think people who are castrated dont have as much body hair, or any at all.

it doesnt mean that all hairy people will go bald, or that all hairless people wont go bald. but i thought maybe my body hair might be an indication of the hormones levels in my body

It means more androgens, and most likely more DHT.
It doesn't nescessarily mean hairloss, that would depen on how able your follicles deal with DHT, how many androgen receptors you have in your scalp, alpha reductase activity in the scalp etc...

an anecdotal counter example, I know a guy who's very hairy, had thick chest hair and a beard when I met him at 16, now at 24 he's like he's wearing an Austin Powers chest wig, hairy back etc - and the dude has a thick NW1. Mind you, his father is the same, NW1 at ~50 odd.

I also know a dude with hardly any body hair (barely has any even on his arms) and he's a NW6 at the same age - lost his at 18 years old over a period of 2-3 years.

Goes to show it doesn't always work out - the first example must have very high androgen levels and very insensitive hair follicles. The second guy is probably the reverse - lower than average androgen levels but very sensitive scalp hair follicles.

Though they say body hair is stimulated by DHT so it's obvious that balding men will have more body hair than NW1's.
Look at all the famous baldies - all are quite hairy.

Yeah, I don't mean to say that it will always be the case that hairy people will be bald and vice versa. But there seems to be a pretty strong correlation with body hair and baldness wouldn't you agree? Of course Robin Williams is the hairiest person ever and hasn't gone bald at all.

Someone with no body hair at all becoming a Norwood 6 kind of seems contradictory to the whole androgen theory. How much research or science is there into why someone with such low androgen levels would go bald like that so fast? It does not make much sense to me that one person can be that insensitive to androgens while someone else is that hypersensitive to androgens. Whats the difference between 2 people like that to cause such a difference?

but thats exactly why they call it a "theory" and not a "law." i think the correlations (between dht/body hair) are there, but they don't have to be entirely perfect. our bodies are such a complicated piece of machinery; the factors are limitless

Thats me, despite having less bodyhair than the average 15 yr old I was still a NW6 in my late 20's.
Personally I dont see any corelation. I see plenty of guys who are like gorilla's but have NW1's. I just believe its random genetics some people are Bald and hairy some are bald and have no bodyhair.
Its just like some are bald and tall and some are bald and short, some are bald and skinny some bald and fat.

Genetics. Why is one person 7 feet tall, while another person is four feer tall? Why is one person very blond, while another person is very black? :)

That may be true but why do women that carry the genes for baldness not go bald then? Why dont we see more women that are hypersensitive to androgens like men with no body hair that become fast Norwood 6? There must be more at play as to why androgens are harmful to hair in some people but not others. I know men that are in there 30s and have there teenage hairline with not a hair on there head lost.
Most women have some androgens even hormones like DHT. A man taking propecia has pretty low levels of DHT. Why then do women not lose their hair but a percentage of men on propecia still do or it works less well after so many years?

Because women don't have nearly the androgenic stimulation that men do.

For the same reason as what I said above.

Sure. Different people have different sensitivities to androgens. But the simple fact of being either male or female is even a bigger factor than that! :)

Sure, they have _some_ androgens, but certainly not as much as a man, on average.

DHT is certainly an important androgen, but it's not the only one.

i think its just dangerous territory when you get into a "yes or no" argument. i do think theres a correlation, but its not perfect--not by a stretch. i just dont know why we have to say whether the correlation is a resounding truth, or a huge fallacy. we all know that hairloss cant be explained with such narrow definitions

My dad has a pretty average amount of body hair and not much facial hair and he started losing the hair on his head when he was 16. My uncle on my mom's side is covered in hair, seriously, his back looks like a carpet. He didn't even start thinning until he was in his late 40's. Infact, he's almost 60 and still not completely bald.
I have a little more body hair than my dad (still within in the realm of "normal") and I'm 18 and have yet to lose any hair (that's not to say it won't start very, very, very, very, very, very, very soon.)
