Hair Starting To Go At 19 Years Old

My hair used to be incredibly thick and voluminous, so much so that I used to get complements about it. However, over the past year I have noticed that my temples have started receding pretty significantly, and while my hair is still thick it is definitely getting thinner. I never thought I would have to worry about hair loss this early, so I need some advice. I would prefer not to go on something like finasteride or minoxidil yet, since I am so young and I am worried about side effects and becoming dependent on it. If there is anything you guys could recommend it would be greatly appreciated.

I recommend you send a picture to allow us to understand what you are talking about.

Apart from that: if you are not up for finasteride or minoxidil, what would you like us to say to you?
Take nizoral?
Dermaroll?
Topical spironolactone?
How are these things better than minoxidil?

These are pictures I just took now. Sorry my hair’s a little messy. The first image is me pulling my hair all the way back showing my temple, the second Is the top of my head, which is still full with pretty thick hair.

Sorry if my question didn’t make sense. I’m not really familiar with hair loss treatments, but I really don’t want to become dependent on some drugs with harsh side effects while so young.

The good news is you are catching it early. The bad news is there are not a lot of time tested and well studied alternatives...anything you do at this time is for life. It sucks. But at least it is just a cosmetic issue and nothing serious. If you have severe male pattern baldness in your family, I would say Finasteride is best. If you don't have any hair loss and temple recession normally just stops for your family, then you can just try some mild regrowth alternatives such as peppermint oil, derma rolling, etc.

My mom’s side has really great hair, her dad is over 80 years old and he has the hair of a 20 year old. My dad’s side doesn’t have the best hair, but I wouldn’t say severe baldness.

Do you think I should start with harsh treatments now or wait until it gets a little worse?

It is really up to you. Nobody here can say for sure that it will regress to the point of baldness. That area is common for white males to have recession in. You can always try the peppermint oil & rosemary oil on the area and massage the area daily and then if you see further issues then move on toward other things.

Thanks, I’ll try the peppermint oil and hope my hair doesn’t get much worse. As of now I can still hide it if I keep the hair on the top of my head fairly long. Could you give me a little more advice on how to use it? Do I put it on after a shower? Do I put it all over my hair or just the temples?

I would apply it everywhere and massage it in after a shower daily.
