Has anyone experienced damage through the use of ceramic hair straighteners?
I started using a (fairly cheap) wet-to-straight one usually set between 100 and 120 degrees C along with the ceramic protect serum late last summer (I can try and find the exact date if it's any help) and gradually started using it more and more as a means of drying my hair after showering. There didn't seem to be any noticeable ill effects until January, when I had my hair cut (on the 9th) and it started to look possibly a little thinner, perhaps a little more scalp showing than before. I didn't think much about it at the time and continued using the straighteners on most days until the 25th, when I switched to a different type of ceramic protect serum as the original bottle was about empty. Glancing in a public restroom mirror that day I suddenly thought my hair looked noticeably thinner than was usually the case.
I stopped using the straighteners apart from maybe once or twice and had my hair cut again on the 17th of February, when I mentioned to my hairdresser that I thought I was thinning a bit. She said there was still plenty there and that it was quite thick, but she certainly didn't dismiss it as nonsense.
At present, I've still got plenty of hair all over, but if I comb/brush it back (as I usually do when it's longer), there's more scalp visible at the front and along the area where the hair parts. There aren't any bald patches as far as I can see, but it strikes me that the individual hairs, particularly those on the right hand side, are thinner than before.
Essentially I'm just wondering if this is likely to be a result of prolonged use of the straighteners and something that will grow back if I cut down/stop using them or if it's more serious and time to look at treatments.
If it's of any relevance, I'm 20 years old and have very straight, very dark hair. When using the straighteners, I used them mainly on the area that's now affected, particularly at the front and upwards from the back.
Anyway, thanks very much if you've taken the time to read all that and any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
