Hair Thinning since age 15

My story:

I've just turned 20 now, and my hair is really thin all over. I think the back and the sides are that way too, sometimes they look a bit thicker but it could be because of the lighting. But overall it all looks thin. I have a full head of hair, its just really thin and you can see my scalp. I'm not sure if its gotten worse, but it generally looks like its thinning out all over. My scalp is also excessively oily,we're talking within 3-4 hours and it gets oily. Its to the point where you can rub a piece of paper on it and see the oil on the paper. The oiliness started happening once I hit grade 10, and my hair was also kind of thin then too. Some people made some comments in grade 7 and 8 about it being thin and from that I started worrying about it all the way till now.

I've tried:

So far I've tried rogaine religiously for 3-4 months then I didn't see any amazing results so I did less and less. The hairs that did grow were very small in size and thin as well. The dermatologist I went to about this problem didn't seem to think that the oiliness was a factor in the hair loss either. Personally I think it is, since the oil dries up on the scalp and ends up clogging the pores. But He wasn't concerned about that, so he just gave me a prescription for rogaine. After seeing no results for that, I went to a chinese herbalist who said that there was a problem and gave me herbs to fix the problem, which I started taking as well and it didn't help. I then went to another herbalist, in total I went to three and all of them said there was something wrong with me. I'm currently taking herbs now, and he has made some topical medicine which is supposed to stimulate and clean the scalp, I think it's working. Haven't seen any new hair growth yet or thickening. I am seriously considering doing laser and rogaine foam.

Can anyone help me out ? I need to know if theres a way to reduce oil , whether its directly or indirectly related to hair loss and thinning, and some testimonials to laser hair therapy and the rogaine foam (whether it works better than the syringe type thing)

Thanks in advance.

Get yourself some Nizzoral shampoo as it really cleans your scalp and fights DHT and stops dandruff. You need to use it twice a week and if you let it to soak in for 3-4 mins before you wash it off, it does I find dry the scalp of oil which is good if you have oily skin that will re-nourish itself within the day.

You want to think about getting on finasteride as well if you really want to fight hairloss from the inside.

To hell with the herbalists. Seriously, those guys don't know sh*t. They'll try to sell you all sorts of over-priced herbal concoctions that promise the world, but frankly, you may as well be taking sugar pills for all the use they'll be. There are lots of people (yes, on these forums) who wasted years trying spurious herbal treatments before getting with the programme and getting on proven medication. Don't make the same mistake. Western science is what you need, not some thousand year old herbal nonsense that has no evidence to support its alleged benefits. Get on finasteride or dutasteride or your hair is as good as gone.

And from what I've heard you need to give rogaine more than a few months. Anyway, it won't stop you from losing hair, it will just offset your male pattern baldness with some new hair, but the old hair will continue to deteriorate. You NEED a DHT blocker or you will lose your hair.

So finasteride , dutasteride, and rogaine + nizor. Where can I get those and are they a for life thing? What about laser?

Is it the Nizoral Topical 2% shampoo ? Or is it spelled with 2 z's? Is this available at a local drugmart ?

Bump,

I'm not sure if its genetics since there isn't anyone in my immediate family who is losing hair, except for one uncle and it isn't as bad as mine. No where near as bad as mine. When I refer to immediate family I, I'm referring to my uncles, aunts, and grand parents on both sides. None of them are losing hair. Only 1 and it is no where near as bad as mine.

Go to your general physician, let him know your situation, and get a blood test. While I'm sure you did prior to seeing your derm, make sure its nothing hormonal as massive hair loss at 15 isnt very normal.

Other than that you can get 1 percent nizoral at CVS, same w/Rogaine. finasteride, just go to your GP and get a prescription.

I've had almost the exact same experience. Started thinning at 15/16 then noticed my hair getting a lot oilier (and smellier too I might add). After some researching, I found out that the thinning actually does cause the oily scalp. So I wouldn't be too concerned about the oil because it is more of a symptom of the thinning rather than the cause.

If you want to keep your hair relatively oil-free, you'd have to shampoo your hair more often (at least once a day). Rub the shampoo in your scalp and let it stay in there for a few minutes. If you can, try not to use conditioner either b/c that'll just add more oil to your scalp. But if you really need to use conditioner, then try not to massage it into your scalp and just use it on your hair. When deciding on what shampoo to use, you'd generally want to go with something that's clear. Clear shampoo usually means there's less moisturizers and all that other unnecessary stuff that may lead to a more oily scalp.

Hope that helps with the oily scalp. Aside from that, I would follow the advice from everyone else and get on finasteride and nizoral. I've noticed that Nizoral also makes my hair a lot less oily so you'll have even more reason to start using it.

^ the minoxidil really helped with regrowth along the hairline and temples. The jury's still out on the finasteride though. After about 9 months, it looks as though I'm seeing a bit of regrowth on the crown (where I don't apply minoxidil) but this is coming after a massive shed that appears to have stopped.

How bad is yours, because on mine you can see straight to the scalp on all over my scalp.

I just got nizoral 2% I'm not sure if that was the correct one but that's the one I bought.

So you're sure the oil doesn't clog up the pores?

bump. please.

My thinning is all over, and to me it looks like someone going through chemotherapy. It's really bad, the hairs are about 2mm spacing each all over the head.

Bleach, I started to lose my hair when I was 13, I remember kids in my class commenting on this and it hurt, so I know how you feel man but you could do with seeing a tricologist as it maybe something else causing your hairloss, it could be your diet or stress related

Yeah mine happened about the same time as yours I remember getting comments on the thinness of my hair at that age, but didn't really become self conscious about it till about 15. What's a tricologist? My doctor never made any mention to seeing one, they just referred me to a dermatologist.

And I don't think its hairloss that I'm suffering from, but the thinness. I didn't have a lot of hair as a kid but it was always really thin.
