Hairstyle for those going bald and don't want to razor close shave it?

I am not brave enough to go with a cleanly shaven head (I.E. Mr. Clean look), nor do I think I could pull it off successfully. I am going to bite the bullet and look seriously at starting hair treatment options, being either minoxidil, finasteride, rogaine, etc.

The thing is, the sides of my hair and back grow really quick and are thick, while the top thin hairs grow ever so slightly. If I let it go too long, it starts the George Costanza horseshoe head look. With the rate that my hair grows on the sides, I will probably need to start getting it cut every 2 weeks until I can get some regrowth back.

I was wondering what you guys who have the horseshoe hair forming, but are not ready to go fully bald shaven do for haircuts? In other words, how do you have it styled in order to conceal or hide your hair loss? Pictures along with a description would be really helpful.

BTW, here is what my hair looks like. As you can see the thicker hair on the sides and on the front patch of my head. Give me some suggestions, because this look isn't going to cut it with me anymore or the ladies.:)

hi I cut my own hair with a clipper. In order to make my thinning hair on top and front look somewhat thicker, I use a No. 1 guard (or no guard) on sides and back and No. 3 to 4 on top and front. cheers

Any pictures with no guard at the sides? I was planning to do the same but no guard seems to short.

I be interested in seeing how a no guard looks also.

Last time I got my hair cut, I did a 1on top and a 1/2 on the sides and back. That was 2 weeks ago and the sides are starting to look thicker again. The pic I posted is around 3 weeks after a 1.5 clipper on top and a 1 on the sides. The sides and back grow back quick and thick, too bad it doesn't grow that way on top anymore.

As it looks now, I am just going to have it cut every 2 weeks to avoid the horseshoe hair. What short hairstyles are the rest of you all going with to avoid this look?

Are you still going to a hairdresser? You could save yourself some money doing it yourself and you wouldn't have to wait 2 weeks. You could try shaving the horseshoe section slightly shorter than the thinning areas to create the illusion that the whole head is shaved to the same length but that the top isn't thinning.

I was doing no guard every time. just easier.

Hated looking at myself, then again no more or less than looking at myself thinning though, but yes it was easy. Just not attractive

Yeah, I am. I don't think I could cut it myself and make it look right. I wish I could do it though. Honestly, I am interested in learning in how I could.

What do you all use for clippers and any good sites that gives tutorials?

I hate looking at my hair too, it sucks and I am sure it's a major turnoff to most women. It sucks that I am only 30 and on my way to looking like George Costanza, all with no real hairloss cure in sight. If it gets to where the hair on top is completely gone and my scalp is shining, best believe that I will be shaving it all off.

Talmoode, if I had thicker hair on top I could pull that look off. With my crappy hair, it's not going to work.

I would never do pigmentation unless I had all around diffuse thinning but no male pattern baldness. To me there are to many variables with that and its even MORE permanent than a transplant.

Have you looked into an FUE?

I just have some cheap wahl clippers I got from Argos, don't do anything fancy I just buzz the whole lot to the same length, not that I'm happy with my hair situation or anything but whatever

You seem to have the same problem I have. All you have to do is either start cutting your own hair or find a barber who knows how to deal with thinning areas(VERY FEW DO). When cutting your hair, just cut the sides and back to match the top. Never actually cut the top. You may have to do this 2 to 3 times before you actually need a real hair cut(cut all over including top)

I honestly think the best thing to do would be to just buzz the lot with no guard or maybe at 0.5. Your hair loss has progressed too far to use concealer or expect outstanding results from treatment. I know that my hair will eventually be identical to yours and I know its easier said than done but its what I would do.

also try grow some facial hair and (I will definitely get stick for this) I would also recommend using a sunbed once a week. Everyone looks so much better and healthier with a tan, regardless of whether they are bald or not.
