Hats are toupée's

Anyone else view hats as toupee's? I once stated that i would never, never even consider getting a toupee....yet I use to never leave the house without my hat on! My hat WAS my toupee. When I would take my hat off, people would notice my hair loss. Comments like, "no wonder you wear a hat" were common. I was hiding behind my hat. It was a saftey zone.

I am a new employee at this company and was told that one of my co-workers was bald and wears a toupee. I did not believe he did, as it looked like real hair to me, but a co-worker stated that he has known the guy for years and that this man started with the company bald (norwood 6). It makes me consider the possibility of getting a fancy toupee. It is funny how some of us would never go the toupee route, yet we hide under our hats and think nothing of it.

Hmm I see your point. I guess they are a primitive form of toupee'. But to be quite honest I would be lost without my baseball caps. I dont wear them as much as I used to because my hair has improved alot and im kinda over it now anyway but, the simple fact is I look great in hats! They even let you wear stylish hats in clubs now and ive even asked many girls out with my hat on and NO PROBLEM getting a number. Its just so f'ing embaressing when im forced to remove my hat my confidence goes down 800% and im not longer a stud. So in way my hats are my hair. These days I use baseball caps for bad hair days only (which is usually 2-3 times a week) and they are great in that situation. I actually find they flatten my hair down pushing it forward so it looks better. The other times I dont wear a hat. Hats are VERY addictive. So id never want to go down the toupee route. Must be awful to be a slave to those things, its bad enough being a slave to my baseball caps....Screw that.

I hate hats! The first time in my life that I ever wore a cap was aged 25 and yes it was due to hairloss. I hate wearing them the vizor obscures your view and it just does'nt feel natural. Not to mention the fact that anyone over the age of 30 wearing a cap looks stupid the same goes for anyone wearing a hat indoors.

I know tons of guys over 30 who where hats. I personally love ball caps and have been wearing them for many years. I wore them well before I has any issues with hairloss and continue to wear them today.

For years I wore hats nearly 24/7. Even at work (I'm glad I had a job where it wasn't that much of a problem wearing a cap). I hated it when people asked why I wear that thing all the time and of course they wanted to know what's under it. Of course they all know that you're hiding something. An extremely uncomfortable situation. I avoided all kinds of social gatherings when I knew it wouldn't be possible to wear a hat. I'm using concealers now and they are doing an amazing job for me and you can say I'm sort of newborn. I'm glad I got rid of the f*cking hats and only wear them (sometimes) when the weather is real bad.

I agree. Hats are a total pain in the *** and ive been your EXACT situation. When you wear a hat constantly people get CURIOUS about what your hair actually looks like....And you know if you take it off people will be like wow!! he is not wearing a hat!>! So it draws even more attention to it..Strangely I discovered i wear my caps ALOT more often, when my hair is longer which ironically disguises my hairloss better, but its harder to style and takes time to get it "right"....So my advice is to shave your head....it gives u so much more confidence!

a hat is a hat, a toupee is a toupee....With a hat you are wearing a hat, not trying to give the impression you have hair.

Yes but many bald/balding guys wear them only to hide their hairloss much like you wear a toupee to hide your hairloss.

But your not faking wearing a hat! Huge difference if a bald guys hat falls off or if a bald guys toupee falls off.

No.

If your wearing a hat to cover your hair loss your always in fear of the damn thing falling off. Just as if you wore a toupee.

I have saying since I joined that hats are a young mans toupee.

Ok...if someone was bald and his or her hat fell off in public, the reaction of the public would b minut. The person might panic but honestly most people would careless or probably not notice. Go out in public with a toupee and watch that baby come off and see the reaction you get from the public....Huge Difference. You are not pretending/faking wearing a hat. Just cause you are bald wearing a hat doesnt automatically mean you are hiding something, Im putting money Vin Diesel sports a cap here and there....but Im putting money on he doesnt sport a toupee.

PPo2 You are taking what we're saying out of context. :shakehead: We're not saying that wearing a hat is the same as a toupee, what we're saying is that some bald guys use it in the same way. (to hide the fact that they are going bald).
Obviously wearing a piece is far more of an extreme measure and a blantant attempt to falsify reality. Whereas sticking a hat on your balding head is just a temporary concealment or distraction.
But the theory is still the same.

Ps I once read a post on HLH about a guy who always wore a cap to hide his balding. He knew things had gone too far when he got into a fight with another guy in a bar one night and in the middle of it his cap got knocked off, he totally forgot about what was going on and his first instinct was to scramble around on the floor desperatly trying to reclaim his cap all the while this other guys kicking the crap out of him!

I have to agree with PeterPaul,If i saw a guy's toupee fall off I would be more shocked, than if a man's hat blew off by a strong gust of wind. I think hats are fashion accessories and practical for bad hair days or just to block the sun out. I personally wear hats all the time, just because i think they suit me and i personally think i have a big forehead so when i sport a hat it just balances my face more. However when i had my hair longer it did make me feel more confident wearing hats, but now that i buzzed my head ppl can't even notice i'm thinning. But i still wear them all the time.

I understand what you guys are saying in that some guys use them as a piece to cover their baldness. But a hat doesnt give the perception to others someone has hair. Where as a toupee does...
But we will have to agree to disagree on this subject for the most part

I also use beanie hats to cover my hairloss and yes, they are like wigs to me.

No, people who are balding wear a hat to hide that they are balding.

So yes, it gives the perception that one has hair.

Oh, totally agree with the hat thing. Older guys (mid 20s+) who wear hats all the time look like total boobs. I used to wear hats when I was in college (had a lot of hair then)...it was acceptable then and probably still is when you're young (i.e. 21-22 or younger)...but once you grow up, leave the hat at home unless it's 20F outside or you're going to a ball game.

Nothing screams "I'm hiding something" like a guy who wears hats all the time.

:agree: Exactly if you're young (under 25) its probably ok to wear a hat like a beanie or a baseball cap quite regularly. As its also ok to dress like a goth/emo wear a hoodie ride a skateboard etc etc...
But when you get older (over 25) if you wear a hat for any other reason than to protect yourself from the most extreme of elements eg only when you go outside on a bitterly cold, rainy (when you'd also be wearing gloves) or very sunny day (when you'd probably be wearing shades aswell). Wearing a hat is not acceptable either indoors or on any kind of formal occasion. Also anyone who wears a hat all the time is'nt fooling anyone. :thumbdown2:

However if you then wait another 40 years it becomes acceptable again to wear a nice flat cap or trilby with a walking stick or hearing aid as an accessory. :)
