Hello everyone - I've been fretting about hairloss for about 3 years - I
started to recede just as I left university, and when I saw a bit of thinning
on my crown with a mirror the other day, I completely freaked out.

Thanks to all of the contributors here, I feel I've got just about as much
information as anyone.

I hated the idea of asking my Dr. (ashamed of seeming vain, I guess)
but I bit the bullet and got a prescription today. He seemed to know
much less about the drug than I did.

Fascinating story - I know - here is my question:

There's no end of talk here about Merc Propecia Vs Generics
I asked my Dr about picking stuff up online and obviously he
didn't advise it. Would I really be that stupid to start shelling
out £40 a month for the original?

Is there any benefit AT ALL in buying the Merc version over the
other extreme: buying generic proscar and splitting it up?

I know it's not logical but it just doesn't seem right. I don't want
to experiment with my hair and would do just about anything to
keep it.

The bottom line is this: If you want to spend 7-8 dollars per month on your finasteride then buy generic proscar. There is not difference other than the cost and that difference is nearly 400 dollars each year.

Keep in mind that the patent on propecia runs out in about 6 months so after that, any company can sell a generic version (they can even start production before I think) I don't know about the european patent though.

I read somewhere that 30-50% of Indian drugs are fake but people on this message board seem to be doing well with them so take your chances.

The benefit is that you know you are getting the real article. There won't be the additional worry, on top of the typical male pattern baldness fretting, of wondering if your Indian knockoff is real. You can mark that concern right off your list.
