I've sat on the side lines for a long time watching my hair fall out, slowly but surely. I'm tired of being locked up on my head about it and am going to give it a solid try before giving up and going to a very short hairstyle, only to await the final fate of my pate (har har).

I'm a diffuse thinner (entire top) with additional thinning at temples and crown and if I had to place a starting point, I'd say my shedding started when I was about 24 (I'm 31 now). At 25 I started hitting the Nioxin at the behest of a friend who is a stylist and noticed the untold number of hairs about my sink.

I'm 31 now and estimate I have about 60% of the hair I had when I was 25. I think Nioxin has helped slow things down a bit but isn't cutting it anymore. At 25 I could style my hair with some texturizing cream any way I wanted (forward or back) and though it wasn't "thick" by any means (never was, always had kinda flat hair) I had a very defined hair line, and you could not see through any of it. Now when I style it, I can only go one way (back), you can see a faint outline of the shape of my head in direct light, and I use Toppik on my crown and rear 3/4 to have enough confidence to leave the house without a hat!!

NO MORE!!!

I've always been terrified about Finasteride, mostly due to the horror stories I've heard about permanent side effects, etc. I know two people who take Duasteride (which great results) who have have said they haven't experienced side effects, but I'm still scared.

Anyway, I'll never know unless I try. 2012 is the year.

I have a significant amount of money set aside for an hair transplant if/when the time comes, but because I'm a diffuse thinner (though I need my hair line filled in and temples brought in about 0.5") I'm worried about my prospects. I want to start with a finasteride regimen and see how that goes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm in the LA area and would like to see a professional to help me start my journey into reclaiming my hair and my confidence. I know that there are a few hair clinics in the area but would love some pointers to get started.

Thanks all!

Sorry for the long post, thanks for reading!

I started balding at the age of 25 (receding temples and hairloss at the vertex).
I waited until I was around 35 before doing anything about it ..

I was worried about finasteride horror stories but decided to take the plunge and go for Finpecia ..

I'm so glad I did .. my crown has filled out and I have not noticed any further recession at the temples .. no sides to speak of except for lasting longer in bed :)
