Help! Need Advice, my doctor turned me down.

I need advice, I'm 29 and for the past 3-4 months have noticed in the shower some hair (not much). More recently, I have noticed my top feeling thinner, one side feels like it has receeded a bit and now i can see some of my scalp through my hair in the very front of my head.

when I ask the people close to me, they say they can't tell. Still, I went to my doctor and he tried pulling my hair. He said with one tug, if more than 6 hairs come out, then we have hairloss in progress. But only 1 hair or so came out when he did this. He said it was hard for him to tell if anything was going on, so he said it is best I wait and see. And he advised not to start with propecia yet.

I am concerned, I felt great afterwards, (who wouldn't, don't we all want it to be not true) but now I feel like I may be wasting time. I look fine now, no one can tell...but i feel it happening. So should I start proscar now? Or should I wait? What if you start proscar and you never really needed it? Would you ever be able to tell? You would just think it's working, right!

Arr i think many feel this way right before they start their regime..the question of when to admit there is a problem and start addressing it? I wish someone woul djust tell me, "yes you are starting the process" so I could then just start fighting it!

Advice?

Thanks

No offense, but he's an idiot. Give me his phone number so I can call him and tell him to go back to school and stop harming consumers with his lack of education on health matters. :) :uglylol:

That is your decision to make. If you genuinely are seeing more skin, and are noticing thinning, then starting sooner rather than later is smart. You may never, ever go bald because of that. However you can probably stand to give it 6 months or so if you have the willpower, to see if it really does continue or not. Hair falls in cycles, and this may be your first "shed". The good news is, it will thicken back up on its own in a few months because those hairs will grow back in naturally. The miniaturization process just means they'll grow back in a tiny bit less healthy. Its smart to not use Propecia before you need it too. So this is your decision.

If you're a male between the ages of 20 and 30 and are just starting to notice thinning (you will notice it before ANYONE else does), then the chances are you're one of the 70% of men who begins to thin out during these years. Sometimes men lose a little and it never goes further. Evaluating your other family members can help you see where you may be headed. Look at your mothers father. Look at your dads father. Look at your dad and your mothers brothers. Get an idea of what runs in your family. How they look at age 50 is most likely how you'll *resemble*. You can see what you're dealing with just by doing that. If you are able, ask them when they first noticed thinning. aside from your own assessment visually, this is really the only way you can get a decent idea if you are or will lose your hair. Note, there are always exceptions.

You are the only one who will know you're losing your hair. Keep your wits about you. Dont go psycho and lose sense of reality like others tend to. Get a digital camera out today and take as many photos of your hair in as many conditions as possible (wet, dry, parted, messy, etc. Close up, far away, etc). Take a ton of pix so that you can get some HIGH quality ones that really show your hair the way YOU see it in the mirror. These will serve as your baseline photos. Baseline photos are imperative to judging your progress over the next few months, as well as keeping your mind grounded in reality on days you "think" your hair is looking thinner, but it really isn't.

gourmetstylewellness.com is right on.

I'm 29 also, and nobody notices that I have lost hair, being a diffuse thinner. But my dad is bald, and when I first noticed (first noticed receding temples, then diffuse thinning on anterior scalp), I was able to "prove" it to myself by comparing photos of now to photos of me in Jan of this year. So time can be critical.

One additional piece of advice I'd like to add is that you simply look at your pillow and the drain in the sink, and see if you are shedding more than the usual 50-100 hairs a day. When I first went on propecia in Sept, I could count at least 20 hairs on my pillow when I woke up, and I could shake off 25+ hairs (with somewhat vigorous shaking) in the sink when I first got out of bed. So there, alone, are 50 super-weak hairs per day for me. 2.5 months after propecia, I can barely shake off 3 hairs, and I count no more than 3-5 hairs on my pillow.

Not trying to sell you on propecia- it is your choice. And you can find a doctor who will prescribe it, or the cheaper 1/4 proscar for you. But I can definitely relate. My doctor and good friends that I've told thought I was crazy, too.

Good luck.

Trust me walrus, you need to do something about it now before it gets bad. But your lucky, since you caught it early you are in very good shape.

For thinners, I would recommend you use:

Nano Shampoo
Folligen Conditioner

In about 3-4 months your hair will look a lot better and a lot less thin and more healthy. I guarentee it, this combo works well for guys i have talked to as it did for me.

If you are receding I am sure you can get your original hairline back, because you said you might be receding slightly.

Just use Rogaine 5% or Xandrox 5% for some extra kick, and propecia (finasteride)

Dont worry man you caught it early so you should be ok. Your hair in a couple months can look a thousand times better if you use the right products. Pm me if you have any questions about products I have been reading info on hairloss sh*t for months so I can help ya out. Good luck man.

And doctors are assholes and dont know sh*t about hairloss. They only know about products that they can prescribe you like propecia and they just know some rough statistics if at best.

I went to see my doctor, he looked at me for 5 seconds, told me I had male pattern baldness, said i cant use propecia cause im 2 young, and told me to use rogaine and was on his way like I wasted his time. He then told me I shouldn't really expect anything from rogaine and that I was doomed to go bald.

If i listened to his advice I would be sitting here with a sh*t hairline and thin hair. But I came here and used good products and now I had regrowth and my hair looks better than ever. My hairline moved up a lot and I am pretty happy.

And that tug doesnt doesn't really prove sh*t. You can tug on my hair pretty hard and you wont get one hair. But I am still have male pattern baldness.

(Actually I might not, long story, dont wanna get my hopes up so im not thinking about it)

I went to a Derm. too, and he said the same sh*t. I sometimes feel that I know more about hairloss then some of these doctors. I probably don't, but I can at least pretend.

That tug method by the doctor is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. You could pull on a guys head witha thick head of hair and pull up more than six hairs. That is no indication of male pattern baldness. Dermatologist are very inconsistent and he probly just wants you to have to come back when or if it gets worse so he can bill you for another visit.

Thanks all....yeah I think he doesn't see the urgency in taking action as I do.

So where is the best place (cheapest) to get Nano and Folligen. I assume they don't sell these at most places. Is online the best? Where?

I don't think I am ready to start minoxidil yet, due to the life long deal, I will hold out just a bit...do you guys post pics on here as well to give each other feedback? Curious, still new here.

Thanks!

Why don't you go back to see that Dr. Nick Riviera-wannabee, put one leg on his desk, put your hands over his head and then thug the hell out of his own hair? :boom:

Hope you'll find a doctor with better judgement. :)

Just my 2 cents.

gourmetstylewellness.com or anyone,
how do you determine your hair loss by looking at your close relatives. My mother's side of the family have alot of hairloss, and my fathers side of the family all have more or less full heads of hair til their 80's. Does this mean that my hairloss will be less severe than on my mothers side of the family or do you inherit this outright form either parent only?

There is no specific science to it, you just can get a basic idea of whats possible for you.

It wouldn't hurt to see a dermatologist. They know what is going on better than doctors, I think. But don't get your hopes up. Mine knew a little bit, he at least knew what propecia and minoxidil were. He was on minoxidil, too. But he didn't even know what the acronym male pattern baldness meant, so that says something right there. He at least prescribed proscar instead of propecia. (I don't want the generic stuff, not yet anyway, I'm willing to pay a little extra for the legit stuff right now.)

But he will at least look at your scalp. My doctor just ran his fingers through my hair, and said "I can't tell you are thinning."

But DO find a dermatologist that accepts your insurrance. They can cost $80 or so for one f'in visit.

Bottom line, you know best about whether or not you are losing your hair.

How is the proscar working for you? Some have stated on this board that they are stopping it because of side effects. As a 29yr old, of course those side effects concern me!
How long have you been on? Has it helped?

From this post, it seems that finding a 'right' doctor that really know about male pattern baldness is quite hard. I currently don't have insurance and in a bit of a financial trouble. I wouldn't want to visit a doctor of that type with me paying full price. I think im a diffuse thinner and want the truth. Any resource to reliable doctors or dermatologists? Anyone know one in california?
