I am new to the forums. I have had thinning hair for the past several years. Most of the forum discussions talk about hair loss, but that seems to be only a small portion of my problem. I don't mean to downplay my hair loss, I am sure that I have lost follicules, and my hairline has receded a little, but my real problem seems to be the caliber of the remaining hairs. I have always had "soft" hair, even as a kid. My hair has never had a lot of body to it. I inherited this from my mother, who we always joke about having "bird hair" because it is soft and about as useful as feathers. If you look at the individual strands, the diameter is much smaller than the average persons hair (esp. my father who has thick hair with lots of body). I have recently started rogaine (5%), proscar (5mg/4), and Nizoral 2%.
I am one month into this regimen, so it is too soon to notice much. I hope that this will halt my hair loss, possibly regrow some of what I have lost. But what I am really interested in is will this help improve the CALIBER, or what some call weight, of my hair? Most, if not all of the products I have researched talk about decreasing hair loss, but I haven't seen much discussion about the effects on existing hairs, or what the quality of any of the hairs that regrow.
I could get a transplant, but I doubt it will help much (transplant as much of my own "bird" hair as I can afford, it would still be soft, limp, useless hair). What would be ideal is if once they master hair cloning, is hopefully they can design "generic (does not have mhc complexes that would cause one to reject tissues that aren't their own)" hair that a person would not reject with specific features (ie. could order whatever kind of hair you want). Alas, while hair cloning may arrive in my lifetime, I doubt this advanced type of hair designing will.
Are there any other treatments/meds/topicals etc out there that address this problem? I just feel like the stuff I am doing may help, but it doesn't sound like any of it was designed for my particular problem. Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
