Help styling receding hairline

I'm mid-30s, and my hair in front has significantly disappeared in the last few years. I'm in that awkward period where I'm still trying to hide it, and I'd like advice on what to do next, suggestions on how I should get my hair cut and styled that would produce the best (or least bad) look.

Here's how my hair looks brushed forward:

Here's how it looks when I try to wear a side parting, which is the style I used back when I had a full head of hair:

I can't get past that ugly clump in front. Does it look okay with a side parting? Would it look better if I shaved it, but kept the side parting?

Here is my attempt to use a comb to move the hair around a little so that the clump in front blends with the hair further back:

Finally, here is what my hair looks like when I brush it back, exposing the recession in all its glory:

I'm not used to brushing my hair back, and my hair seems to resist it. It's hard to keep it together that way. I would like to know people's opinions on how good or bad each of these pictures looks, and suggestions on the best ways I can get it cut and styled.

Hey Buddy, I have the same type of pattern as you except yours is a little thicker and I am blonde. Keep the length for sure. Every time I cut my hair short I instantly regret it. :sobbing:

Please try this. This is what I do and I can make my loss almost invisible as long as it is grown out a bit.

Order some type of concealer fibers (toppik, nanogen, whatever you desire).
Dry your hair completely out of the shower. Take some styling wax/paste and rub it through your hair and pushing your hair back. While your hair is back, use your concealer at the front and thin spots.
Next, use some hair spray to keep the concealer in place.
Now, start to pull the hair forward and do a sort of messy/faux hawk or whatever type of forward style you desire. You can even push the front coompeltely down.
Please try this out. It works wonders.
Hopefully that made sense. I just kinda went at it haha.

Do you get your hair cut by a professional? If so, what do you tell them to do to it?

I actually cut it myself so that I can keep it at my desired length at certain parts.

I buzz the sides and back with a longer clip (usually an 8 or 7) and cut the top with scissors, keeping it longer... especially at the temples~!

:agree:

Definitely, you can buzz the sides and back a much as you like, but never let your hairdresser f*ck with the temples!

If you don't tell them explicitly to keep it longer at the fringe and on top, they will just cut your hair like a NW1 and make you look like a freak, this has happened to me many times in the past.

Now I know this guy's hairloss isn't that advanced & I'm not saying you should copy his style exactly, just using him as an example of a guy who makes the most out of his NW2.5. Sure, it doesn't look as good as a NW1 and Norwood spotters like us may still be able to tell, but it still looks a helluva lot better than a swept back exposed Norwood and all the girls love this guy.

Does your hair stay together when there's a gust of wind, or after removing a baseball cap?

going very short on the sides makes the top seem thicker.. allowing you to cut the top shorter and brush it forward...

it does mean that you have to keep at it regularly.... but doesn't mean wind or hats give you that undesired hair look that you have to go fix

For the past few months, I've been shaving my head and although, I've had mostly positive reviews about it, but I'm 28,and still want to try different hairstyles and at least, when it does go, I gave it a real go and kept re-inventing myself.

I shaved due to being fed up of applying concealers and my hair looked awful when I grew it out previously (NW3-starting to diffuse thin) and I hadn't really shaved before. The shortest before I shaved it off in October/November was a 3/4 all over.

Sorry man, I am babbling, but your hairline you can still do things with it.
Like the posters above have mentioned - kept it short at the sides. I had a mohawk for a few months - nothing outrageous just a shortish mohawk but I had a job interview so shaved it.

Like posted above, get some clippers - keep the side hair shaved. It doesn't take long at all, and after 3-4 times you'll be great at it. Even if you struggle with it to begin, get a friend/partner/family member etc to help you.

I've used concealer in the past and my only concern with it was the mess it made but I used a lot and tried to hide a almost horrific Javier Bardem 'No Country for Old Men' hair-doo behind a NW3/Diffuse. :woot:

Keep us posted how it goes. My hair's growing in and I'm tempted to grow it out again similar to the Olly Murs photo just to see how it looks.

Anyways, good luck.
