Hi, i've been lurking this site for a while now and thought it was time to ask for some of your expert advice. I am a 23 year old asian male with a receeding hairline. I have always had a big forehead, but since high school it has considerably receeded. I was wondering where i would be on the Norwood scale and if it's just a mature hairline or male pattern baldness? Thanks guys

Crown looks ok, I think it's just the flash.

Hairline could easily just be a 'maturing hairline' - It looks think. Guess you can only look at your family history and see if it continues to receed.

Some will tell you that you're balding. But I've seen people with hairlines like yours look the same 10+ years later.

Re: Hi all, need some advice, male pattern baldness?

Hey Fundi, thanks for your reply

I think the pictures make my hair look thicker than it really is, i must not be taking good photos, or maybe it's the lighting in my apartment. I first started to notice it when i was 16, it has slowly receeded for 8 yrs now. It really sucks having such a high forehead, so i have to use the "ashton Kutcher" hairstyle, long bangs in the front to cover the temples.
As for my family history, my dad is pretty much bald on the top and he's 50. My grandfather i hear is bald too, never met him or seen any pictures. On my mom's side, i have 1 uncle and he is bald too. My mom's father is 75 now and not doing too well for having hair. So it looks like i'm most likely screwed. I've gone through some pictures of my relatives, no one seems to have the same hair as me.
I was wondering what i could do to grow some hair on the hair line, i don't really want to take any pills. Also where would i be on the norwood scale?

Thanks again guys,

Richard

kerzyguy - i've seen a few of your pics, you have a great head of hair, you must have all the confidnce in the world

So last night my gf of 2 yrs broke it off with me, i'm sure it's because i'm balding. :( I always wonder if i had more hair would things be different.

So in 2 wks i will have an appt to see if i'm a good candidate for a hair transplant, hopefully that goes well. I'm afraid the Doctor will say i'm too young, or have to shave it all off for the procedure.

I'll give you guys an update in 2 wks

As fundi said, it could just be a maturing hairline. Your best bet for now is to monitor your hairline, and to make sure you eat a healthy balanced diet. This I think happens to most guys with age, with exception of the few lucky bastards who retain their hairline. If you were however losing your hair from the crown, then you are more than likely balding - but in your case you are not.

If overtime say 6-12 months it regresses further, then look into meds. You will be dependent on them for life once you start treatment (so it is best to delay the meds for as long as possible, until absolutely neccessary), and even then there is no gaurentee it will work.

Oknow - thanks for your input

I'm pretty sure if family history is an indicator, i'm headed on the path of baldness. Is it possible baldness skipped my generation? I have 2 younger brothers, aged 18, and 20 so far no hairloss but i guess they're still young.

Right now all i want to do is get my temples filled in and have a straight hairline and lowered a few cms. I haven't done much research but it seems like i won't be able to take meds for a better hairline, so i'm considering a small hair transplant. The idea of taking meds for the rest of my life really scares the shat out me. Eventhough the crown sems to be ok for now i wouln't mind if they could thicken it up a bit.

Your girlfriend of two years broke up with you becuase you are balding? Did she say that? What makes you think that?

As mentioned, the hairline is receded but your hair looks very thick so it could be a maturing hairline. Some peoples matured hairlines can have quite deep temple recession.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do

Weird angles in your pics - hard to tell what's going on.

Try taking a picture with your hair held back (and sitting up this time) so we can see your recession more clearly.

You remind me of a Japanese friend I have had for over 6 years. His hairline is exactly like yours and in particular the shape of both of your foreheads. I always thought he was balding but his hairline didn't change since I met him. Either it was his natural hairline or it receded and halted where it was [yet to resume?] is unclear to me. However, to avoid giving you a false sense of security - I'd ask yourself has it changed significantly and are the hairs on your hairline looking thin and whispy? If so, I'd certainly consider taking precautions.

Are you sure its not down to anything else. There are many reasons a girl can leave you and you have only named one. What was her excuse for leaving you? Your hairline looks mature but not a definite sign of balding. Your best shot besides a hair transplant is propecia and rogaine, but they might not give you all your hair back. You should get your scalp mapped for miniturised hairs to determine the pattern of hairloss. If your losing your hair be sure to find your self a good dht blocker (to slow or stop your hairloss from progressing) and get a hair transplant to fill in the hair at the front. There are many other products you can use to assist in further regrowth but they may be useless without some sort of dht inhibitor.

That looks like it's beyond a mature hairline. Your crown looks perfect, doesn't look like you have any balding back there, but you're definitely receded pretty bad in the temples and your hairline is thinning . Personally I don't like propecia and I don't think it's worth the risk of sides in your case because you seem to be losing in the front only. You could have success maintaining/thickening what you have now using a strong topical regimen.

If I were you, I'd be looking into:
Nizoral Shampoo
NANO Shampoo
Tricomin
Rogaine/Minoxidil
Prox-N
Topical Spironolactone
