High Estrogen Levels

Hey,

My serum estrogen is 183 (should be below 130). If anyone here knows a good deal about hormones (TEST SUBJECT #1? drinkrum?), is this exorbitantly high? Should I take action to lower my estrogen levels?

Been off finasteride for 10 months now.

Yes, that is high hair -- mine however was 212 and I'm 21 years old. I would recommend getting on Arimidex for a few weeks to see how you feel. And go see an endocrinologist if you get the chance and see what he/she recommends.

Sounds really high to me, but i'm no expert. One would think an environment of high estrogen would be good for the hair mind u, but as a guy, not very good for the old pecker!

High estrogen would also presumable result in higher body fat %. Definately bad for sexual function tho!!!

Finally some answers! Good.

I know you don't quite believe my propecia side effects story, but nevertheless its true. Here is one of my actual posts back in November 2001 when I was in the midst of the hellish estrogen elevation.

As you can see, my levels came back as 156 and according to my results sheet that was higher than the highest in the female range. At that time I had nothing but side effects all throughout my body. It was horrible.

Fortunately discontinuing Propecia returned me promptly back to normal, but now you have your answer. You're significantly higher than I was and I was in a living hell. Guys, consider yourselves lucky you do not have estrogen excesses. It sucks.

Without a shadow of a doubt I would suggest you see an endocrinologist. I would not self medicate and i would not rely on your primary care physician to have a damn clue what to do. They looked at me cross eyed when I told them Finasteride can cause an eventual reflex increase in estrogen. Doctors are a joke. Go see a specialist.

If you need any assistance finding one, let me know. It will depend on what kind of insurance you have, but check your carriers physican directory and start calling one by one down the list to see who has an available appointment. I know here in san diego endocrinologists have a 6 month waiting time for a single, stupid 15 minute appointment.

As a side note, someone in that very thread suggested that social drinking can cause a perpetual continual increase in estrogen as well. To an extent he's correct. I don't know what your alcohol intake is but it directly increases estrogen levels. Laying off the booze could help significantly.

(most of aromatize activity is in adipose tissue)
Alcohol (more than 7 a week) increases estradiol
(of course binch drinking is even worse)
caffeine; more than 14 cups/week of coffee (2cups day, 4 cans of soda/DAY) increases Estradiol, SHBG, and lower bioavailable testosteron

aging; estradiol levels rize when u age because aromataze becomes more active..

Foods containing high levels of phytoestogens (=isoflavonoids, flavonoids, stilbenes, and lignans) reduce eostrogen levels significantly due to selective estrogen receptor modulating activities.


Soy contains a lot off isoflavonoids.
red wine contains resveratol (trans-3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene ;a lignans)
(also a lot of anti-oxidants an polyfenols witch are healthy as well>)
green tea contains the powerfull catechin epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)
with lowers estradiol (but also testosteron) and inhibits cancer initiation
(green tea also contains caffeine. so dont drink loads ..)


Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower provide isothiocyanates (ITC) and other glucosinolate derivatives (Indole-3-carbinol ) ..these have effect on the estrogen receptor response


SO LOSE WEIGHT. (most important!!!!)
reduce cafeine intake esp from coffee..
drink 1 or 2 glasses of RED wine a day (max 7-10 a week).
eat lots of green vegetables esp broccoli chinese cabbage (dont cook/boil long)
drink green and black tea (not to much because it will also decrease testosteron levels and to much caffeine increases estradiol)
drink natural decafinated tea like hibiscus (increases testosteron lowers estradiol...ANIMAL study ) or stinging nettle tea (good for prostate...litte evidence)

DOnt drink a lot off alcohol
Keep fat intake low (<20% kalories of dailyy intake) especially saturated fats.!!

quit taking finasteride for a week every 2 months...(??)

if al this doesnt work take a aromatise inhibitor (like arimidex)
2 times 0.25 mg a week ..for 4 weeks...(a dokter should monitor u)
this definatly lowers estrogen. (dont over due becoz men need some estradiol)
and keep the diet (for the rest of your life)

Now you know what the problem is and now you can fight it. I doubt very much that a dr or even a specialist will prescribe you arimadex or any anti estrogen drugs. Luckily there are an abundance of cheap, reliable places online to get it. Did you get your dr to check your testosterone levels? You may be a candidate for hormone therapy. Ask about androgel ( a cream) or if you can manage the pain he might be willing to give you a few hundred mg of testosterone in the *** every few weeks. Good luck.

I dont really have anything to add that wasnt mentioned already, however I disagree that soy is good for decreasing estrogen levels, some eveidance suggests the oposite. Doctors are useless when discussing hormones (disturbing but true), hormone replacement therapy does not hurt either but I doubt that is what you need. If I didnt already mention it, look in your yellow pages under Sports Nutrition or Sports medicine as these people deal with athletes that alter their hormone levels constantly through steroid or pro hormone use. They will be of great help in pointing you to a speaclist that would better understand what you are going through.

Best of luck, Im going for another blood test tomarrow. I am also going to get my nipples looked at cause I'm getting a nagging feeling that Propecia is starting to give me a boob. Joy.

I am planning to see a specialist (endocrinologst that focuses on such problems). She is a well-renowned doctor who is at Yale Med. and I have been conversing with her regarding my situation. Anyone want to make a road trip? New Haven, CT is about 3-4 hours from me.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for all of your advice. I greatly appreciate it. I actually started a new thread so that I can post updates and such. It has all of my test results, not just estrogen. But I guess I'll make a few comments here.

First, I've been to an endo, and he was of no help. He told me I need sexual counselling, despite the fact I gave him good evidence that this is not in my head. He also told me that I shouldn't worry about enjoying sex and that I should instead focus on my partner, as if to imply that I was being selfish for even caring that sex has become more of a chore and an exercise than something to be enjoyed. He wasn't concerned about my test results one bit, despite the fact my estrogen is sky high and testosterone is on the low end of normal.

I am going to try Arimidex, .5 mg twice a week. As I said in the other thread, I'm not crazy about the idea of self-medicating but since none of my doctors haven't been of much help, I feel as though I have little choice. I'll be careful though, and I'll check my testosterone and estrogen again in a couple of months.

I'll start looking for a new endo soon. I'll probably take TEST SUBJECT'S advice and look around for a sports medicine doctor. Also, drinkrum, you think you could pm me with this specialist's name and contact info??? I live in Philly, so New Haven, CT isn't too far for me.

As for laying off the booze like gourmetstylewellness.com and Rudiratlos suggested, I've stopped drinking altogether in the last couple of months because I didn't want that interfering with my test results. I doubt I'll be boozing it up again anytime soon, which is too bad because my friends are going out drinking this Friday. Ah well. It'll be like my straight edge days all over again - sXe.

Yep! Click that link in my post, ... says normal for men is 40 to 115. On my results I think highest for women was like 150 or something. I was *just* above it.

Oh well. 212 must really stink.

Is there any danger of permanent damage from having significantly elevated estrogen levels over a long period of time? I'm gonna try to get my estrogen levels down, but I'm scared that permanent damage has been done, since I imagine my estrogen has been this high for quite some time - possibly as long as a year and a half maybe.

This is alll good information for me because i am in the same boat. I made a post today asking all these questions.

My Estrogen was over 200 as well I think he said 230 but i cant remember. Its making me nervous and i think i am going to buy some of that anti estrogen. I dont no if it is mental but sexually i dont feel 100% more like 60 or 70.

Also someone said in this post to lay off FiNAsteride for a week every 2 months, Will this help or make my hair fall out faster?

Sure, Polarbear, sounds like 0.32 nanomoles (presumably nano-gram-moles) per liter. Tell me what units you desire and I will provide you with a conversion factor. I would have given you a conversion factor already but I don't know what units the rest of these guys are using.

Then we can do a "sanity check" by checking your <0.20 nanomoles/liter vs. the normal ranges to which these guys are refering.
