14 June 2005, Australia :

Concerned that his pate is starting to resemble an old cricket pitch that's devoid of turf, champion legspinner Shane Warne is undergoing replacement treatment to regenerate his peroxided blond locks.

The notoriously image-conscious Warne, never afraid to test the boundaries of what's acceptable in the often macho forum of Australian cricket, discovered he was losing his hair during a recent trip to a hairdresser.

The 35-year-old Australian legspinner, who holds the world record for most test wickets at 583, signed up with a hair replacement company that has previously featured retired international cricketers Graham Gooch and Greg Matthews in its advertising.

Warne reportedly will feature in TV and magazine advertising campaigns in Australia.

"It's great. My hair is growing back and my hair loss has stopped," Warne said in a statement.

"The treatment does not involve surgery, wig implants or hair attachments -- although with his coiffured and peroxided locks it would be harder to pick than his flipper if it did," reported Tuesday's Daily Telegraph newspaper.

Warne also was undergoing weekly laser therapy and taking regrowth pills, the paper said.

The controversial cricketer notoriously claimed after testing positive for a banned diuretic that the substance was contained in a slimming tablet that his mother had given him to enhance his appearance on television. He was banned from cricket for 12 months for the doping violation.

A lot of people watch Australian cricket. Cricket is much more popular globally than American sports, perhaps, with the exception of basketball.

I watch cricket - and I think it's way for interesting than baseball -
a reply like "cricket sucks" is a subjective opinion and not really a measure.

Anyway - I think you can get the answer to your question at Advanced Hair studios website..

Cricket does not even compare to baseball. People who are not from America are usually insanely jealous of it and try to diminish all of its traditions. It's not surprising an Aussie would try to talk down baseball in favor of a crappy game like cricket.

Avanced hair seem to be doing a good business in getting 'new hair' for retired Cricketers - First Greg Matthews then Graham Gooch, Graham Yallop, Martin Crowe and now Shane Warne. I remember when Martin Crowe got his - most people (who arn't losing their hair ) think its real hair from a transplant or something like that - but in reality its nothing more than a toupe bound on by the hair on the side of his head which has to be tightend evey 6 months.

Cricket is absolute crap IMO, but in global popularity and veiwing terms baseball is not even remotely in the same ballpark (pun intended).

It's no wonder that the most talented athletes from South America, Central America, Canada, Europe and Asia flock to America to play it's game. I don't know of any sport where the best players around the world aspire to play in only one country's league. Baseball requires the most hand-eye coordination and talent. It's the sport that best combines aspects of total individual accomplishment and teamwork. It also includes the most diverse mix of people in one league, unlike basketball, football and hockey. Any of you Aussies or Brits who wants to bash on America and it's traditions only come across as jealous.

maintainence1, Europeans brought stick-and-ball games to the American colonies as early as the 1600s. Until the late 1700s, however, they were widely considered children’s games.

By the early 1800s, a variety of stick-and-ball games had become popular in North America. Most of these games originated in England. Many people in northeastern cities such as Boston, New York, and Philadelphia played cricket, a traditional game of English aristocrats. But an English game called rounders, which was eventually played in rural and urban communities throughout North America, most closely resembled modern baseball.

You got anything to back that up chief? I take it by "football" that you meant American football. If not, are you actually saying now that baseball has a more diverse mix of people than "rest of the world football"? If so, we are all laughing at you right now.

Who says anyone is bashing on America or its traditions? Also, why would we be jealous of something that we regard with complete indifference?

All we are saying is that as a global game you cannot compare baseball with cricket.

http://www.rediff.com/cricket/2001/jul/25jog.htm

Globally, cricket is played all over the World. The fact that baseball, to a great extent is limited only to the United States, is ample indication that it lacks the appeal which is important for a game to gain global acceptance. On the other hand cricket may not be as popular as soccer but it has an international standing and at present apart from the 10 Test-playing nations there are over 120 associate nations that form the ever growing cricket community. The associate members include the United States, The Netherlands, Scotland, Hong Kong, Singapore and many others. This is a clear indication of cricket’s growth as a truly global sport. Also, it proves that cricket enjoys more popularity over its counterpart.

That is a statement of fact.

Uum why is pointing out that baseball in global terms is undeniabally not as pospular as cricket considered bashing? Your picking a fight over something that your are ignorant about. I would naturally presume youve never been to India, etc where cricket is more than a game and how many people live in India alone Einstein?

Step putside of your insular cocoon for awhile, there is a world outside of the USA you know that right? It does come as a shock to some Americans. Cricket is a sport like Formula 1 that is massively popular around the world but is realtively ignored by the sports media in the US, therefore I can see why you have complete ignorance on the matter.

For the record id rather watch a baseball game any day of the week rather than cricket, but the world outiside of the USA, with the exception of Japan and Cuba does not really give a sh*t about baseball.

For example baseball is as popular in the UK as Nascar is - pretty much completely ignored by the UK sports media, but has a small, passionate fan following and if your lucky you can catch it at 2am on channel 5. Just like Japanese sumo wrestling.

You see the level of disparity were talking about here, as a massive motorsport fan I know how hugely popular Nascar is in the US. Dont natuarally assume what is popular in the US is popular elsewhere.

I have not read anyone who's actually responded to what I wrote. Everyone keeps mentioning how many more people play cricket than baseball in global terms. I don't care at all. Just because there's more people playing cricket in no way affects my argument. The fact of the matter is that if the talent of MLB was as diluted as cricket sounds, I wouldn't be speaking so highly of it. To say that baseball lacks "appeal" mistakes the fact that it is elite. It only allows the most talented to participate. Secondly, I am sick of the whole "American's are cocooned" bullshit. It's just not true. From what I know of the British, they are pretentious, worthless has-beens. You should come to grips with the fact that your country has sucked for about 200 years now. No one cares about you any more. I don't give a sh*t about rounders back in the 1600s. To imply that major league baseball lays its roots back in a bunch of scraggly-toothed Brits back in the 1600s is ridiculous. The fact that you have to go back to the 1600s is very telling about you guys. No one cares that you were powerful a long time ago. Get over yourselves and your small, cold, shitty island. Tony Blair was smart enough to latch onto America b'c he knows that's the only way you guys are going anywhere. Another relevent example is the hair loss industry. Do you see any products coming out of these other countries, i.e. Britain? No, the most and best come from America. To say you're "indifferent" to America shows your ingratitude, if not you're bitterness over the fact that we split from you guys and formed a far better country over here. To get back to the baseball topic, to say that "people only care about baseball in the US, Japan and Cuba" is so ignorant I will not even begin to tear apart the sheer stupidity of it. Do your research and you'll see about 20 different countries represented in MLB.
