How did people deal with hairloss 40 years ago?

They had no propecia, no minoxidil, no nizoral, no concealers, no hair transplants, nothing...

Also a shaved head wasn't seen cool like today.

They had to accept wearing a thinning head and look like a sick man or a pervert or someone with a infectious disease

But on the other side I think that image was not so important as today, and I'm almost sure there were not so many bald guys like today. In terms of %.

What do you think?

Good point. I like looking at old historical pictures and it seems that there were far fewer baldies then than today. And the ones that were bald were off the Norwood scale. In an old photo of 50 railroad workers I once saw, maybe 2 were bald. In a modern group of 50 people, you see lots of bald guys. I sat in a balcony recently, and I was shocked at just how many shiny tops were out there. It must have been about a third of the audience! Ages from 30's to 60's.

Is it the hormone & preservative pumped food? The stress? Why is it so much worse now?

I am starting to believe STRESS really has a big impact in hairloss..

Even when those bullshit sites say that it is a MYTH...

lets all have a field trip and count howmany bald dudes we see, it can be fun!

and then, the best part is: classifying them on the Norwood scale.

I'm sure all that has a big impact in hairloss. Also add stress.

I just hate all those guys saying:

"hehe all that is a MYTH, get on the proven treatments if you want to do something for your hairloss"

lots of those guys in this forum.

I was talking with my social worker one time who is bald and asked how he dealt with it (he was in college during the 60's). He said he just didn't care. My grandfathers did the same thing too and dad also.

Sean Connery was NW7 at the age of 20, 40 years ago. Then, he became a film star.

In 40 years time people will look back at us and wonder how we kept up with our regimes. I guess back then the comb over would have been popular

My opinion: two factors are at play.

1) In modern times, we idealize physical youthfulness and perfection. Sure, they didn't have rogaine and finasteride back then for men, but they didn't have silicone/saline breasts and liposuction for women either. Look at old photos of 40's or 50's women on the beach, they tended to carry a lot more weight than women nowadays do. Same goes for men. In short, the "bar" of physical attractiveness simply was not as high as it is now.

2) Life expectancy was shorter. This comment mainly directed towards the "photo of old railroad workers" comment above. A century ago, men didn't expect to live beyond 60. Shorter life span in the population = less norwood.

Come to think of it, Gardener, ALL of those people were butt-ugly!

Go dig out your parents high school year books. Even putting aside the bad styles, there were some ugly mugs in those days. Face it, if you are ugly, good hair ain't gonna help you. This is something I've noticed. If you are homely, no one cares if you are bald. But if you are better than average looking, then you get the eyeballs boring a hole through your chrome dome.

What gives?

They didn't have nothing, they had SOMETHING: wigs. They either went bald, or wore toupees.

re:

It is very simple, vanity has run amock in American society. Why? Maybe because life was much more of a struggle in the 1950's and 1940's so they had other more important things to worry about back then. Today, every person has a car, a TV and can at least afford MacDonalds. Also, we are bombarded with constant photos and TV programs showing beautiful people because sex sells. This sets an unjust standard for the society and causes us to feel ugly all the time.
I for one just think that human beings suck.
