How does finasteride cause impotence?

What happens in our bodies when we take finasteride/dutasteride that makes some people suffer from erectile dysfunction?

Interesting question... The reduced DHT in the prostate/seminiferous tubules is the cause of the reduced ejaculate volume that a lot of people notice, but that is not really impotence.

Testosterone is actually increased with both, so it is not an androgen defficiency.

I wonder if it is not somehow a central effect of DHT... ? as people have commented on the presence of 5-ar enzymes in the brain/cns. Just a theory.

Still, it is relatively uncommon, may improve with time, and should be reversible with cessation of the drugs (may take a while with dutasteride).
