Biotin is excellent apparantly for everyones hair?

How effective will taking additional biotin supplements be for my hair?

im 17 my hair is thinning all around because hair loss runs in my family , and i have a recided hairline. What should i do? wahts to be expected from biotin? why dod people take biotin? does it maintain what you got, and help regrow hair? does it increase the density of hairs? thougths? anyone use it before and got some results? Its a viatmin, so it seems like a small risk to see a big reward? im also currently taking minoxidil applied once a day plus nizoral every other day during the shower.

It's a good supplement but you need a combination of treatments in order to prevent permanent hair loss.

Thank you for the reply! Yeah thats what im striving to do. Taking biotin may only potentially help stop my hairloss along wiht other products, but biotin has no negetive effects on my body? since it is just a vitamin?

Biotin is a good sup to add in. I wont say it gave me any regrowth but it does help your hair appear healthier after a month or two. When you buy some make sure you get a pretty small dosage or it will cause acne. I think I settled around 500 mcg or something like that.

Biotin wont stave off your hairloss, but it will make your remaining hair healthier and somewhat thicker

Authors: Floersheim GL.
Institution: Dermatologie FMH, Rennweg 15,CH-4052 Basel; Switzerland.
Title: "An examination of the effect of biotin on alopecia and hair quality"
Source: Zeitschrift fur Hautkrankheiten. Vol 67(3) (pp 246-252+255), 1992.

The effect of a daily oral dose of 2,5 mg biotin was studied in 93 patients with the symptoms hair-loss (mostly androgenetic alopecia) and reduced hair quality. The mean duration of treatment was 7,9 +/- 2,8 months. An obvious improvement of hair-loss was reported in 64%, and a slight improvement in 9%. Hair quality was clearly improved in 70% and slightly in 12%. Brittle finger nails as an additional complaint were improved in 80%. If alopecia, decreased hair quality and brittle finger nails occurred in combination, improvement was observed frequently collectively. The study allows - as already shown in a previous investigation concerning brittle finger nails - to suggest biotin as an effective and well tolerated therapy in cases of alopecia and decreased hair quality.

I would have thought biotin would only be effective if your body has a biotin deficiency?

That's the problem with these "study's". They are misleading, you have to consider the context and information that is missing.

"Brittle finger nails?"

What are these patients? Malnourished anorexics?

Jesus f'kng Xist. They can probably eat a box of crayons and still see an "improvement".

I take 1000mcg daily and think maybe I should take 2 to maybe even make an impact. But I really haven't noticed too much recently and have taken it 1-2 months on and off so definitely, I'm not a good example. My hair in the crown area kind of lays on top of each other & if I move it to the left, I see can scalp exposed in that area so not sure if that's a good thing or if it's normal. But I honestly think Biotin is good & helps out but not really sure what the ideal of how much is a day. My multi-vitamin (Garden of Life) has 900mcgs of Biotin also. I definitely want to achieve the same too by thickening it and also maybe reverse the minimum thinning, possibly. Good luck!

There are biotin supplements out there in 5000 mcg capsules. A number of vitamin makers put out biotin in that strength.

I've tried biotin but i'm on fifteen other things and it's hard to say that biotin did anything. Realistically is biotin comparable to finasteride or avodart or some of the much more potent antiandrogens, most likely not.

Hair loss is so complex. It's not like treating diabetes. Their are so many factors involved and if you are losing hair at 17 you are doing the right thing by getting proactive now but be realistic and understand you will be fighting this your whole life unless you accept the fact that you are going to be bald to some degree and shave your head.

Genetic hair loss is painfully powerful and sucks. I remember a pic of myself at 18 with a receding hairline. That was my hairline since I was 13 and I started treatment at about 21 and there was no real plethora of information on the internet at that time. Basically p**rn and wrestling was it. There were no forums, no ordering any medication you may want to try from India or China, there was solely propecia and rogaine. No not even generic minoxidil. So the positive thing is their is much more information and treatment options then ever but understand biotin, saw palmetto and other basic stuff is supplemental but not the answer...

Scientific Opinion on the substantiation of health claims re

I myself wasn't very convinced by these sporadic studies about Biotin, so I decided to make a search and I found that the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) has given has a good opinion about Biotin for maintenance of normal hair:

Following a request from the European Commission, the Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies was asked to provide a scientific opinion on a list of health claims pursuant to Article 13 of Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006. This opinion addresses the scientific substantiation of health claims in relation to biotin and maintenance of normal skin and mucous membranes, maintenance of normal hair, maintenance of normal bone, maintenance of normal teeth, maintenance of normal nails, reduction of tiredness and fatigue, contribution to normal psychological functions and contribution to normal macronutrient metabolism. The scientific substantiation is based on the information provided by the Member States in the consolidated list of Article 13 health claims and references that EFSA has received from Member States or directly from stakeholders.

The food constituent that is the subject of the health claims is biotin. The Panel considers that biotin is sufficiently characterised.

<...>

Maintenance of normal hair

The claimed effect is “bone/teeth/hair/skin and nail healthâ€￾. The target population is assumed to be the general population.

A claim on biotin and the maintenance of normal hair has already been assessed with a favourable outcome.

If I remember correctly, I think Botin is very prevalent in our diets and rare to have a lack of it in our bodies. Melotonin is suppose to help hair too. For all we know, botin and Melotonin might help grow more hair on our scalp, our ***, our back, our chest, our arms and legs, AND OUT OUR NOSE AND EARS LIKE GOOD OLE GRANDDAD! Bet you can't wait huh. So enjoy and eat a bunch and report back, thanks. :)
