How effective is Nizoral?

I don't doubt that keto is a decent anti-androgen, BUT Nizoral is a shampoo. How much can a shampoo help??? The keto is on the scalp for 5 or 6 minutes, 2-3 times a week. Could that really make a difference??

I like it, I don't know if it's helping at all with hair loss, but my hair looks and feels better. Maybe it was because I was using crap shampoo before, I don't know, but it feels great now!

It makes a big difference for me. I'm using it every day to keep seborrheic dermatitis under control. I was stupid enough to stop treatment in january this year. Within 3 days I got an outbreak, and I needed steroids to get it under control again. I'm never going off.

Damn, it makes my sebborr. dermattis worse :( At least I guess that's what it is... it's on my lips. I use selenium sulfide lotion and that usually helps but since I started using nizoral it is just constant with my lips. I tried cortizone on the lips for a couple of days but no help :(

But how effective is Nizoral as a anti-androgen/hairloss treatment?

Preliminary research suggests that ketoconazole shampoo (brand name Nizoral) may be beneficial in men suffering from androgenic alopecia. Support for this comes primarily from one study in 1998 that compared ketoconazole 2% to the proven hair loss drug minoxidil 2% (brand name Rogaine) in men with androgenic alopecia.[19] The study concluded that "Hair density and size and proportion of anagen follicles were improved almost similarly by both ketoconazole and minoxidil regimens." In other words, ketoconazole shampoo used 2-4 times weekly was nearly as effective as the proven hair loss treatment minoxidil 2%. While ketoconazole's mechanism of action in hair loss is still unclear, it has been postulated that both hormones and the immune system act synergistically to cause injury to the hair follicle. Since ketoconazole effectively treats the malassezia fungus that commonly inhabits the scalp, the researchers hypothesized that it may prevent hair loss by reducing inflammation from the fungus, in addition to having a direct anti-inflammatory effect.

The researchers were guarded about the meaning of their results, saying that more rigorous studies on larger groups of men should be done to confirm the findings, both to evaluate the ideal dosage and formulation, and to assess the desirability of routine treatment in this condition. Although no further research in humans has been undertaken, there was a study on ketoconazole in 2005 that corroborated the existence of a stimulatory effect on hair growth, this time in mice.[20]

Anecdotal reports indicate that both the 1% and 2% dosages have hair loss benefits; however, the more potent 2% formulation may produce better results. Excessive usage of either formulation has not been shown to produce better results. The results produced in the one study in men are based on ketoconazole 2% shampoo, used once every 2-4 days, and leaving the shampoo on the scalp for 3–5 minutes before rinsing (as with the treatment of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis). It has been stated that medications capable of maintaining the existing hair population, even in the absence of hair regrowth, should be regarded as effective treatments for androgenic alopecia. The present data suggest that ketoconazole should enter this group of drugs.

Nizoral Shampoo is only FDA approved for the treatment of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp, so although Nizoral may be useful as a hair loss remedy, it cannot be endorsed or marketed as one to the general public.[21]

Fairly effective it seems. I seem to recall seeing a study on people using Nizoral 2% every day for 6 months, and the results were quite good. Can't remember where I saw it though, and I don't know if that is to be recommended (using it every day that is).

Wouldn't count on it stopping your hair loss altogether though. Might slow it down a little.

I don't like Keto shampoo's. They're too agressive for me and cause inflammation (=more hair loss). I use a shampoo with piroctone olamine instead. It works wonders for me (=healthy scalp with more density).

There's a study that found piroctone olamine's effects just as good (or even slightly better) than keto for treating hair loss. You'll have to search through the forum to find it though.

A lot of people said start on the 1%, but I've been to loads of places that only offer the 20mg/g?2% right? They looked it up for me yesterday in their lists of products and that is the only one, which is the 2%. There was no other version in the manufacturers lists. Can someone please confirm what that's all about please?

^ Nizoral does infact come in 1% snd 2% forumlas. I believe 2% is only available by prescription in usa and some countries. Here in canada 2% is sold in pharmacies over the counter. I have never seen 1% here.

And to comment about use: I have used in conjunction with finasteride in the past and have noticed less irritation on my scalp. Never have I had itchyness or dry hair from nizoral use. For me it is something i will continue to use.

Just bought 2% Nizoral 60ml from Tesco for £5.95, no prescription needed!

Wasn't sure why this was so important to the hair regimen until the other day when I started scratching the itchy scalp around my hairline and an almighty dandruff snowstorm ensued.... I've never seen anything like that before ever, it must be the minoxidil!

How can I avoid the major Nizoral shedding though? Start off using it once a week then build it up from there??

I just read on here that the 2% shampoo was too aggressive for some people and caused significant shedding, maybe they were using too much, too regularly?

Like I've asked before....... does Anyone in the UK know if and where 1% is available, as chemist listings don't show anything other than the 20mg versions just in different size bottles..........

Morrisons sells Nizorelle, its a 1% keto conditioner so it'll be better if you find Nizoral too harsh.
