How is baldness inherited ?

Women too? Why am I the only lucky one to inherit this from my dad and I know soooo many women with balding dads who don't . Then again, I guess guys can say the same.
I don't resent my parents for it, but I'm very disappointed in the mental support I get. All I hear is , just get over it and move on. Wish it was that easy.

I think I inherited the AR receptor from my dad and the amount of DHT from my moms side. My maternal grandfather had a head full of hair, but he died from prostate cancer, so he must have had a lot of DHT but wasn't sensitive to it. On my dads side , almost all uncles are bald and dealt with acne and SD problems, which I think is the result of sensitive AR receptors. So I think it also works the opposite way.

Did your maternal grandfather had acne or body hair, if not, it doesn't mean he had high scalp 5ard activity since it is locally produced DHT (follicular DHT) which is the most responsible for miniaturisation. And even though he died from prostate cancer, it doesn't mean he really had high levels of skin and scalp DHT.

Majority of people here who deal with premature male pattern baldness in very young age have balding maternal grandfather, who also started balding very young. It is very hard to judge.

my maternal grandfather didn't have acne or body hair.
My dad has SD and started balding in his twenties, his brother started balding when he was 17 or 18 and he suffered from cystic acne. One of his daughters who is in her late twenties seems to be thinning too.
Me,I started losing hair in my twenties, never paid attention because it wasn't that noticeable, now it's really bad.

Are you on finasteride or dutasteride, because, if you have high DHT levels, and normal AR sensitivity then you might benefit from taking DHT inhibitors. Do you have body hair. acne ? And your hair, juvenile hairline, texture, does it resemble more to your father's side or mothers? What about your brothers ?

Anyway, how old are you? You can post some photos of your hair here, or send me PM.

I'm a woman, I'm in my late thirties, don't have body hair in fact my eyebrows and eyelashes are thinning along with my hair. My brother has thick hair but is receding , I think he's a Norwood 2 , maybe more. I don't have a clue who my hair resembles too, my mother has thick hair (thin strands) but it looks like she's receding in the front, my dad used to have thick hair (thin strands), but is a Norwood 6 . Both always had black hair, my brother has brown hair, me I was born with copperblond hair which is brown now, actually just like my maternal grandmother used to have (I have hasel eyes just like her, while everybody has dark brown eyes) .I don't remember or notice any extreme thinning in her hair. Makes me think though, I have to check out some pictures of her and see, maybe I never paid attention to it.
Are women allowed to take finasteride or dutasteride? I've been thinking of trying it but don't know if it will work for women.
Thx

From what I've read I should be the least probable candidate for male pattern baldness and even if I had male pattern baldness I should be able to control it well. Here's my family hair history:
Maternal Grandfather: passed away in his 50s with a head full of hair
Maternal Grandmother: still alive with reasonable hair for her age
Paternal Grandfather: Norwood 6 bald when he recently passed away. not sure when he started losing
Paternal Grandmother: not sure
Father: Norwood 6 bald but didn't start until well into his 40s (brothers also all had hair in their 20s)
Mother: Has poor quality of hair. (brothers started balding not before 35)
Sister: Has a lot of hair loss but not balding
After reading this I don't think I'm much of a candidate for male pattern baldness or at least not starting at 17. I however grew a lot of body and facial hair quite early on. I hit puberty probably somewhere around 12 and was able to grow a full beard by the time I was 15 and also had grown all my body hair by then.
This probably proves I have a lot of T and DHT but being on Finasteride for 6 months and Dutasteride for 1 year after that has not helped much. I haven't even had any real sides while on the medication. Seems to me like I have super human T and DHT and sensitive follicles at the same time.
