How much better is dutasteride than finasteride? (Thinking of switching to finasteride.)

Hi guys, I've been on dutasteride for some 15 years, luckily on NHS prescription. I'm 40.

For various reasons I won't bore you with I'm thinking of switching to finasteride.

I currently have basically a full head of hair (Norwood I) and all I take is dutasteride. Before that I was a Norwood III aged 24.

Based on your experiences, if I switch from dutasteride to finasteride (and maybe add Nizoral), what change in hair loss am I likely to see?

Thanks in advance!

I honestly would not **** with it man. Just stay on dutasteride if you value your hair.

dutasteride took you back to a NW1 from a NW3?!?!? Seriously? What's your dosage?

Why do you want to switch?

No one really knows the answer there, but I would expect hair changes if you switch from dutasteride to finasteride. dutasteride stops like 99 percent of the DHT and propecia is only like 60 or 70 so dutasteride is a lot more effective. There is enough stuff no one knows about male pattern baldness right now to fill books. Dont mess with success if its working stick with it unless you really have a good reason to change

How quick did you regrow from Norwood 3 to Norwood 1? Some people say they are a Norwood 3 but in reality were an early Norwood 2 with some slight thinning. Did you just have a forelock and slick temple areas?

Lol hearing stories like yours make me want to do the opposite of what you're considering, and swith TO dutasteride. I might ask my derm about it if I make it to the 6 month point on finasteride without any serious sides.

I was a 3 but mainly at the crown. I don't have photos I'm afraid. I had noticeable thinning 5 inches across the crown. Very embarrassing and people would comment on me losing my hair.

Now the thinning is about 2 inches across and barely noticeable. With dry hair after washing, you can't tell at all. I add some Toppik sometimes to really thicken it out. Nobody has commented for years.

My temples are completely full, like when I was a kid.

Hard to say how long that took. I think a year to get most of the regrowth.

BUT DUTASTERIDE IS SUPPOSED TO RUIN YOUR HAIR PERMANENTLY, MAKES IT ALL FALL OUT AND NONE OF IT COMES BACK, EVEN ONE PILL A WEEK WILL CAUSE THE EFFECT OF SOMEONE TAKING A RAZOR STRAIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR HEADDD

But seriously, I almost gasped when I saw 15 years, you may be the longest user of dutasteride for hairloss on the face of the earth.

Just bumping my own thread here, but I'm curious if there is such a thing as switching from dutasteride to Minoxidil and keeping the growth?

minoxidil used to work for me but I was sure it was giving me bloodshot eyes so I switched to dutasteride.

But now I'm being super paranoid in a serious way just in case dutasteride can affect sperm. Starting a family soon. I know the evidence doesn't show that it can, or that it can't. My doctor says it's fine. But I still wonder if it's decreasing my count. I had that checked and it was just below normal, but still I like the idea of coming off it after so long... just in case.

Would Minoxidil allow me to keep what I've grown back with dutasteride?

I've heard duta can reduce sperm counts. Switching from duta to minoxidil would be suicide. Would probably lose all the hair you've managed to keep. Switching to finasteride is an option, and you could keep all your hair. Also finasteride doesn't reduce sperm counts as much as duta so may be a smart move. If you notice an increase in hair loss after switching then just switch back. Also the half life of duta is 5 weeks....I am pretty sure if you take duta .5mg everyday for 1 year, it takes over a year to get it completely out of your system after quitting, so if you've been taking it 15 years it is going to take a while to get out of your system.

won't dutasteride be in your system for years considering how long you've been on it and it's crazy long half life?

Op if I were u I'd switch from dutasteride to finasteride, get levels checked again and if still low just take a 3 month break from AAs to conceive.

I've mentioned in another post that I've seen first hand what dutasteride can do for severe hairloss. A guy the same age as me destroyed his hair with steroids. Even when he came off them he went from a nw2 - nw4 in mabye 4/5 months. Took dutasteride and dropped steroids, regrew to NW1.5 in a fairly quick amount of time and still looks maintained. This is going back 6 years.

Interesting. What dosage? Did he use anything else?

Switching to just minoxidil and keeping 15 years worth of dutasteride maintenance?
