how often do you shampoo

My coworker today told me he only washed his hair once a week, and in the past has gone a couple weeks. My first reaction was of shock, but he assured me it wasn't as gross as it sounded and helped encourage the scalp to produce its own oil.. So now I am trying it, I haven't washed my hair in 4 days, and it almost seems like my scalp at the vertex is experiencing alot less sensitivity than it has in the past. I haven't notcied any itching at all whereas before it seemed to be rather freqquent. I may be jumping to conclusions here though, does this idea have any merit in hairloss?

When I first started noticing hair loss (6-7 months ago) and before finding this site, my first reaction was to shower less. I started going 3-4 days without using shampoo, just wetting my hair if I had to shower.

Since finding this site I have gone back to daily showers, but instead of my regular shampoo I rotate nizoral, tricomin, t-gel.

Bottom line:

In both cases my head was itching badly. Only recently (10 days) has my itch gone away completely (6 weeks into using new shampoos + finasteride). I guess it must be the finasteride then? I'm really not sure.

Twice a day. I feel dirty if I go longer than a day. If I go a couple days without, my roots start to feel irritated and sore.

I shower everyday. I shampoo every other day. I do believe that shampooing everyday tends to dry out my hair and scalp more than I like.

@ Gardener:

You shampoo 2x per day. Isn't that kinda harsh?

my study may be inaccurate anyways because I had run out of propecia and just went back on it(proscar this time, 30% the cost!), so maybe the improvement in my scalp was due to being off it and than back on.

No, shampooing twice a day has not affected my hair quality. In fact, I used to shampoo only once a day, and in retrospect my hair always felt kind of greasy and sore at the roots in my pre-regimen days, although I didn't really notice this until after I showered 2x day. I just like the feeling of a clean scalp, but perhaps my scalp has a bit more sebum that most?

I shampoo everyday but that is because I use cheap shampoo's If you get good quality stuff you don't have to do it every day(depending on your line of work). I am considering doing it every second day with a quality shampoo.

When I first experienced hairloss I came across an article about Sodium Laureth Solfate. So I cut back on my shampooing to twice a week with a SLS free shampoo. Within 6 months the hairloss had excellerated badly and I needed to look at starting a regime.

I currently shampoo and condition daily of a morning, and shower of an evening (just to get the hairstyle products out) sometimes using conditoner.

Good post! I tend to shampoo every other day and sometimes every two days. Shampooing less often does seem to encourage my scalp to produce more of it's own oil.
