How serious is a receding hairline at 18?

18 and a NW2, will this progress? Will I be bald in my 20s, despite family history?

I'm 18 years old and a solid NW2.

I have thinning on the right side of my hairline. Lots of tiny, thin hairs.

On the left side, it's still receded, but not as much as the right. There are also less thin hairs.

I don't mind staying a NW2, it doesn't look weird. No one but me has ever noticed this, and when I bring it up, they all say it's either a high or maturing hairline. I just hope this doesn't keep progressing.

A little bit of family history:

Mothers side:
Thick hair, but all the men progress to a NW2 in their early 20s/late teens, and stay there, pretty much indefinitely. No further balding for any of them.

Father's side:
Thinner hair, began thinning on top at 40. He said that at my age, his hair resembled mine (in terms of the hairline and texture). However, he stayed at a NW2 until his early 40s.

NO ONE in my entire family progresses PAST a NW2 anywhere before 30.

I'm 18 and like I said, a NW2, with an uneven hairline.

Could I actually progress to a NW3 and beyond at this young age? Despite the fact that no one in all my extended family has before 30?

Or will I just follow either my fathers pattern (begin seriously thinning around 40) or my mothers side (remain at NW2)?

Please help.

Thank you.

Unfortunately there is way to tell for sure. But..I can tell you that I started to get a receding hair line around seventeen/eighteen and am a norwood 2 currently at the age of thirty-eight.

Keep an eye out on CB-03-01, which is a topical anti-androgen designed to make Finasteride completely obsolete. It is, on paper, 4X as powerful as finasteride without any of the dangerous and potentially permanent sexual side effects.

Here's a chart of results from Cosmo Pharmaceuticals thats working on the new drug:

Those results finasteride could never achieve.

That said, don't take finasteride, youre far too young, your body is still developing. minoxidil can give you a major shed and it may take a long time for you to recover from. Also, take a look at dermarolling:

Perhaps if you applied minoxidil to your thinning hairline ONLY along with dermarolling you could regrow what you just lost? Its far easier to regain whats been recently lost than it is after 10+ years of balding.

Thanks guys.

That CB looks interesting and I will definitely keep an eye out for it in the future

I wouldnt even think about finasteride unless I see significant thinning on top of my head. Right now its just a very receded hairline.

Does anyone know what all these thin hairs on one side of my hairline mean? Could I recuperate them with minoxidil?

I'm on Finasteride at 24 and have had no further hair loss whatsoever, both sides of my family have male pattern baldness and my hair is actually thicker than my brother who is 21, I've seen a bit of regrowth on my temples and it's slightly fuller overall and less shedding, the only side effects I've experienced is a lower alcohol tolerance (which SUCKS) and I'm hornier but have slightly less ejaculate, maybe by 20%. But other than that it's worked for me, I was a mild NW2 prior to Finasteride and now my hairline is about even but still slightly thinner in the temples so it has done something.

I suggest doing something if you start to notice your temple bangs getting thin or stop growing (which happened to me) because once the hair strands minimize to the point of being invisible you lose them and your hairline is forever increased and it will never go back to how it was. $60 a month is nothing if you have self confidence and having nice hair certainly helps.

Thanks Travalanche.

I'm still not going to go on Finasteride until I notice some more obvious signs of a bald future.

Right now, I'm not sure.

My uncle, grandfather and cousin on my MOM'S side all lost hair at my age, but they all stopped at a NW2. My father followed the same pattern, however at 40 the male pattern baldness started up again and now he's a NW4. So in my genetic history, that would be the worse case scenario.

Or am I being optimistic, could I progress to losing hair on top and crown despite my entire extended family's history, on BOTH sides, of no further balding past a NW2? If so, I would be the ONLY one.

Tell me your opinions and also how you're balding compared to your family's history of balding.

Also, the corners of my hairline have always been higher then the rest. I've always had an M shape, as long as I can remember. It's just that now it's a much deeper M. The forelock is still strong.

Yeah CB will be a game changer if it ever makes it to the finish line. It has all the properties of the ideal AA. Being able to simply take it if you feel worried about hair loss or even if you dont have male pattern baldness just for comfort might be a possibility. A lot of times its hard to say whether its male pattern baldness or will progress. With CB you dont have to think about it you can just take it for fun if you want just in case.

It's a 2 year old post by Hellouser. Still finasteride remains at the forefront of treatment. Best for newbies to live in the present and treat their Androgenetic Alopecia with FDA approved therapies or they will go bald waiting and dreaming of something better. Live in the moment especially if you're a young guy with aggressive Androgenetic Alopecia. dutasteride may not be approved for hair loss but it has clinical trials behind it for example. Evidence is vital. No evidence of permanent sides on finasteride despite people having "brain fog" but using their computer all right. Or people having "demylination" but normal EMG or "limp dick" that mysteriously works to p**rn.

No DHT = no baldness, screw the genetic disorder and its cascade :eek:nfire:

Hair restoration is currently the only way to have hair in a sly area that makes a cosmetically significant difference.

If your happy going bald and trying experimentals that may leave DHT roaming your body or cause you sides, by all means do it. It should never be the first port of call.

Nothing more romantic than having ED and castrated levels of DHT but full hair and looking your best. Thank you finasteride.
