I can't seem to gain any weight. I'm about 5'7 140lbs and I have been on that scale for a while now. I eat regularly.. breakfast, lunch and dinner and snacks in between. Play sports here and there usually on weekends. thnx

drink lots of soda and fruit drinks, like tampico. that will make you gaine weight. Not the right kind, though.

As for protein, your body can only absorb so much at once. You can absorb far more by eating 30g per meal at 7 small meals than you can by stuffing yourself with huge steaks 3-4 times a day.

I just bought a Weight Gainer 1850 from a GNC store. I'm not sure how to use it though. It says "Mix 3 cups (400g) into 24 fl. oz of cold water or 2% reduced-fat milk. Blend throughly until dissolved. A blender is recommended for ease of mixing." Not sure how much I should take a day. Any ideas?

Weight gainer powder is pure crap. Take it back.

Get a good protein powder supplement and start eating. Eat 6 meals a day. You can get your base calorie map calculated. (how many calories you burn in a given day), then add about 500 - 1000 calories on top of that.

I'd start by eating at least 3,000 calories per day. Exercise, go to the gym etc. And as was said before, protein, protein, protein.

Last spring I went on a hardcore routine to gain mass. I'm a skinny guy to in general and I started working out hardcore, working my way up to 200 push ups a night 120 pull ups a night and just hitting all the big muscle groups like that.

Don't worry about doing curls, calf raises, and other specific target type exercises right now. First build up your chest(bench press(all angles), push ups), back(pull ups, rows), shoulders(military presses), legs(deadlifts, squats).

I customized my own weight gaining high protein shake. I bought some milk/egg whey protein powder (just the raw powder no flavor) that had around 25g of protein per scoop. I would put 1 scoop or one and a half scoops and add milk (2% or WHOLE milk would be reccomended if you are real skinny, although I used nonfat at the time), than a few scoops of vanilla ice cream(or whatever your fav flavor is), a banna, and some peanut butter.

Needless to say, I worked out like a man on a mission and took my shakes twice a day, ate high protein diet and cut out all the junk.... I got big real quick. I had wings and my chest got swell.

Pulled these off of BN.com about a year ago.. Reformatted into bullet style, printed and have taped to the inside of kitchen cabinet door for quick reference. These are AWESOME in every aspect!

Chocolate Banana Icey
Ingredients:
• 16 oz. of skim milk
• 6 ice cubes
• 2 bananas
• 2 tablespoons of heavy cream
• 2 scoops of chocolate whey protein powder

Chocolate Banana Bench Press Blast Off
Ingredients:
• 2 scoops of chocolate whey protein powder
• 8 ounces of skim milk
• 6 ice cubes
• 1 banana

Blueberry Cream Monster Maker
Ingredients:
• 2 scoops of vanilla whey protein powder
• 16 ounces whole milk
• 4 tablespoons of heavy cream
• 6 ice cubes
• 30 blueberries

Chocolate Peanut Butter Power Blaster
Ingredients:
• 16 oz. of skim milk
• 6 ice cubes
• 4 tablespoon heavy whipping cream
• 2 tablespoons of natural peanut butter
• 2 scoops chocolate Miscellar Casein protein powder

Mass Maker
Ingredients:
• 16 oz. whole milk
• 1/2 cup raw almonds - blend with milk only until creamy smooth
• 1 large frozen banana
• 2 scoops of vanilla whey protein powder
• 1 tablespoon of Flax Seed Oil

One of these post workout and another before bed- you'll be packing on tasty pounds in hurry. These are taste so great, they're truely rewards after a hard hour in the gym.

Btw, I highly recommend ON (Optimum Nutrition) Whey protein. The double-chocolate flavor in milk or h20, is top notch. Also, if you're ordering online, I'd advise http://www.bodybuilding.com. They're by far, the fastest and most reliable on the net (and I've tried em' all).

2 tablespoons will not be enough.. the scoopers for weight-gainers are HUGE, but that's typically how they're deisgned to be taken- in large doses :(

I asked the guy where i bought it how long does this container last. He said 1 - 1 1/2 months. So this container is 2000 grams shouldn't I be taking roughly 50 grams a day?

How do you figure that will last anywhere close to a month? The directions say mix 3 cups into 24fl oz of liquid and blend. The box says it's self it only contains 5 servings...So...If you take 2 servings per day, your tub will last 2.5 days. The guy at GNC is an idiot. And FWIW, the people at GNC usually don't know sh!t.

Dude, like I said, don't get your calories from a freaking weight gainer shake. Since you bought at GNC for $26.00 (online price) you get 5 meals out of it. You could have eaten the same calories of real food for 1/2 the price.

If you want to gain weight, it's cheap and easy.

1. Go to the store, and buy the tub of oatmeal (store generic).

2. Eat minimum of 1 cup of oats per day. Some cook em, some blend em and stick in protein shake. Some eat em raw with water. I prefer eating them raw with water. Eat the oats before 5pm in the evining preferably. I like to eat em 1st thing in the morning. Oats are just about the cheapest good calories there are.

3. Buy brown rice. White rice is bleached and has tons of other crap that you don't want in your body. Learn to love brown rice and eat it almost every day if you can stand it.

4. Buy lean meats, chicken breast, turkey breast, lean steak, hamburger etc. Buy a cookbook and learn to cook. I prefer the Body for Life Cookbook. It's got a great balance of fat, protein & carbs...Plus the food tastes pretty good. If that idea doesn't float your boat, go to http://forum.bodybuilding.com/forumdisplay.php?f=13 and check out all the recipes they have there for free.

5. Drink WATER! Drink about 1 gallon of water per day. Yes, I said 1 gallon.

6. Go to the gym and lift. If you're skinny, you don't need to do much cardio at all if any.

7. Don't lift like a p*ssy. 3 sets of 20 reps is stupid if you're trying to get big. Try 3 sets of 6 reps to start. When you can do that...Then 4 sets of 6 reps. Then look into something called 5x5 on bodybuilding.com

8. Don't just lift upper body. Most of your muscle weight is in your legs. Learn to squat and love it. Learn to dead-lift and love it.

9. If you're skinny, don't workout on an empty stomach. Drink a protein shake about 30-45 min before hitting the gym...Then another shake after working out.

10. If you need a summarized version = EAT, water, lift, NO cardio. Weight gainers are stupid. :)

I eat mine raw each day with water and unsweatened cocoa powder. My question is, are they fully digested when they are not cooked? I know beans have to be cooked, or at least soaked, to be edible. I just wonder if it is the same with oats. Do you know?

BTW, I agree with everything else you said. That's what I do. I always thought weight gainer shakes are dumb.

You are definitely able to digest raw oats as long as they are rolled oats. Though to be extra sure, I always buy instant oats...Those I can 100% guarantee are able to be digested.

The only oats I had problems digesting were steel cut oats. Yeah, don't eat those raw unless you enjoy crapping undigested oats a few times/day...Your rectum will thank you, trust me.

Mine are rolled. And they say instant. I think they cook fast because they are finely cut. I'm too lazy to wash a pot or wait for it to boil, so I eat them raw. OK, I hope you are right.

I once read a body building mag that listed good food to eat, and it listed hot oatmeal. I wonder why they would specify "hot" if the raw is just as good. I guess I could let it sit in water for 5 minutes before I eat it.

I think they probably said hot oats because most people wouldn't think of eating em raw. Whenever I tell people I eat raw oats, they look at me like I'm crazy. My fav way to eat em is with a chocolate protein shake to wash them down with. Yumm, chocolate oats.

If you're really worried about absorption, you could always chew the oats.

The only reason steel cut oats can't be digested is because they have an outer hull that our bodies can't digest. Well, most people's bodies anyway. Since rolled oats get rid of the outer hull, there's no reason they can't be digested.

I tend to agree with the fact that weight gainer is not the most effective way to put on the pounds.

Some people genetically just have a very good metabolism and struggle to put on weight and no matter how much u eat it is never proportionate to the amount of excess food u are eating. The best way is to start weight training and increasing your muscle mass, is that something you want to go into??

Alternatively u may just have `worms`.

You actualy need the right genetics to help put on size/muscle mass. I've been training for 12yrs and although I have good shape and definition. I just cannot put on mass like some guys can. Yes I have increased muscle size but I'll never be a huge guy because my natural build is very slim. I can however stay pretty cut without any effort.

s.a.f.,

how many reps do you do to reach failure? And how tall are you and how much do you weigh? How much can you bench press once?

I'm I'm 5'8" (171cm) and weight 152 pounds (69 kg). I'm probably 10-13% body fat right now. Supposing I have similar genetics to yours, do you think I can put on another 10-15 pounds of muscle in a year, and stay there?

I'm almost exactly the same size as you (173) and (150) probably the same bodyfat. When I first started out I knew nothing and used to do lots of reps but over the years the reps have come down now I generaly keep within the 7-15 rep range. I'm not powerlifting or going for huge size just trying to stay in good shape. I suppose I look like a gymnast or maybe have the same build as a sprinter. I never do 1 rep max but I usualy bench sets of 70-80kg for 8-10. I guess I could bench maybe 200lbs.
For relativly smaller guys like me and you putting on 10-15lbs is pretty difficult unless you get serious, training 5 times a week using supplements, eating a lot etc. I only train 3 times a week and use a very small amount of creatine after each workout.
