I thought I was crazy as I have observed the same phenomena with different recreational drug(s)

After reducing my recreational opiate usage (@ 1/1/2007) , my hair loss drastically accelerated. I went from never thinking about hair loss to constantly thinking about hair loss.

I personally think it is the stress factor at play here. I speculate that my cortisol levels are much greater now . Androgenetic Alopecia is really such a complex disorder numerous hormones NOT just DHT are involved.

After cutting out the drugs I basically was forced to start on Propecia

I was (am) afraid that people will think Im daft for claiming recreational drug use helped my hair

I've had thin hair throughout my life until I started smoking at 20. I had a cannabis club pass in the state of California for medical reasons, so I was smoking only the good stuff. At first, I was smoking 1-2 times a week. After a few months, my hair became thicker than ever, and this was around the same time a younger sibling was losing his hair to male pattern baldness. For some reason, I stopped my "regimen" 8 months ago, and my hair has definitely gone downhill rapidly since.

I also noticed during my years of medicinal use, my physical fitness was better than ever. My running endurance was much higher, I no longer suffered from stiff joints (hehehe, in my legs I mean), and my knee pain disappeared. After doing some research, I've found that good medical marijuana turns out to be an excellent anti-inflammatory: http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/115806131/abstract?CRETRY=1&SRETRY=0 and http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/07/080720222549.htm. Like my hair, my physical endurance went downhill after I stopped smoking 8 months ago.

For anyone interested in smoking pot as a medicinal supplement, I'd say moderation is the key. Keep it to about 1 or 2 joints a week, try to find yourself some less potent sativa strains, and avoid indica strains if you don't want your pot use interfering with your life.

What about consuming marijuana in cup noodles? I can't smoke to safe my life, but have access to lots and lots of MJ. I will def. add marijuana to my regimen if it means a fuller head of hair and stress-less life.

I'm pretty sure weed has some effect on the hormones, from my experience, it mellows me out and turns me into a "pussy" if you can call it that.

Weed lowers the testosterone levels in the body so that in turn my be why it would benefit hairloss

I would definitely NOT use pot every night. Marijuana loses any medicinal benefit it may have when it's ingested/inhaled on a daily basis. Practice moderation with this stuff. Keep your pot use down to once, maybe twice a week.

I am more than just a causal smoker, and I'm losing hair pretty rapidly. I don't think it has any effect, beyond placebo.

Whoa there, that is way too much green tea extract - are you sure you're taking 6640 mg twice daily?

I agree, why so much? Drinking 2 cups of green tea (or having 2 small doses of green tea extract in a capsule) will be better than having 1, but more doesn't mean better...

Most of the potheads I know (chronic smokers, I'd say at least 10 joints a day are consumed) have some of the most beautiful hair I've ever seen, both on men and women. I know a pothead that has hair down to his *** for crying out loud.

http://www.naturodoc.com/library/kevis/ ... c_info.htm

"One study indicated that blood flow to the scalp of young men diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness) was 2.6 times lower than in the normal control group. A lack of proper nutrients, certain amino acids, acid polysaccharides, minerals, and vitamins can certainly hamper hair growth."

now get this:

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn6975

the article says that it increases blood flow in the brain, does this mean that it also increases blood flow in your head? :dunno:

first of all, some of you people are idiots i will say.

I smoked marijuana from when i was 17 to about 21 years old.. I quit for a few years because i had a kid, then started smoking again. after i stopped smoking i did lose a lot of hair now that i think about it, but who knows and i don't really care, i just know i started losing my hair when i was about 22yrs old and im on a mission to get it back. i occasionally smoke on the weekends.

and for the record there are a lot of successful marijuana smokers. I for one am not a loser . i'm a manufacturing engineer by trade and also an IT/web/programmer.

my 2 older brothers have smoked weed and they have full heads of hair
however one of them went through a bad episode and has been on Zyprexa for 3 years and is only just coming off, because of that i wouldn't dare touch the stuff...

i am sure THC also widens the blood vessels so it might have the effect of both minoxidil and finesteride

cannabis might not harm the body that much but it can completely f*** up your mind

Hmm..This definitly seems plausible I guess.. The problem is that its hard to know how much one would need exactly. My hairloss had started before I stopped smoking weed. So i'll never know exactly. In my personal expereince though, I cant say there is that much correlation with the freinds I know who smoke it and their hair..I knew a few guys (all around 20) who are seriously thinning and receeding for their age - a few others who have very very thich hair, so its hard to say.

One guy I know, who is thinning on the front considerablly, is someone who seems is very stressed/depressed. I have definitly had considerable stress in my life - my parents divorcing, a family tragedy, above all, an angry father. So perhaps stress can trigger male pattern baldness. But the same could be said for diet and genes I guess.

Some people lose their hair because of anxiety, pot is good for anxiety. So I would put pot on the same level as yoga as a treatment for hairloss.

This says that marijuana can actually increase hair loss. Anecdotal reports, it seems, do vary.

Personally, it seems a bit far-fetched to me but not impossible. Marijuana does seem to cause gynecomastia. Perhaps it upregulates T conversion to E, which would indirectly reduce DHT as well.

Personally, I'm not willing to smoke marijuana everyday to stop this, and I'm sure many others are the same. Has anyone tried a topical version, or is considering it? The whole idea does sound a bit ridiculous to me but if anyone's had success with it I'm willing to give it a try.
