just put some hydrocortisone 1% lotion in with your shampoo. It will do the same thing - probably for cheaper.

Would that be smart? I mean shampoo get's everywhere when you wash it out and HC should be localized. I don't know about you but I would try not to get any of that stuff on my face, eyes, ears, etc.

using topical steroids for prolonged periods of time isnt advisable. It causes the skin to thin. Just do some research on google and read the warnings. By the way, hyrdrocortisone is a topical steroid in case you didnt realize that by now.

Most of the reported sides from hydrocortisone are from concentrations way over 1%, or other more potent topical steroids.

IMO as long as you only use it once per day max, you could probably use it forever. Since your face only absorbs 7% of HC, and the skin on your scalp is thicker so the absorbtion rate is even lower.

There have been people that have used 1% HC for years and years on their faces with no problems at all. Though, prolonged use will probably develope dependancy on it...So if you ever decided to not use it, you'd have withdrawl symptoms that lasted for a week or so.

Most peoples withdrawl symptoms would include very dry skin, burning/itching etc, possibly temporary skin discoloration. One user reported his skin turned an orange color and hurt extremely bad. But this user had used 1% HC for years on his face. Again, since we're talking about scalp usage, sides may not be as bad.

If you want to use topically, you can use 2x - 4x per day for a week, then drop down to 1x/day max. Maybe even EOD usage just to be extra safe. If you notice any local sides, discontinue, or drop usage in 1/2 and re-evaluate.

Cortaide has a 1% HC spray bottle which is super easy to apply. A few sprays on your scalp 1x/day and no nasty cream residue to deal with.

thanks for the responses guys. I'm aware of it's side effects but i know that it's only a problem over long term usage...doctors don't recommend using it for more that a week or two...
I will try the lotion with a shampoo unless if i can find it in a shampoo.

hydrocortisone is always recommended by doctors to treat my seb dermatitis. I'm not sure exactly how it works but it's supposed to calm skin irratations....i just have a hard time rubbing the cream into my hair to get to the scalp...that's why i'm looking for a shampoo.

Are you sure its a steroid? Well, i think thats only true more for strong topical steroids anyway. I was using this really strong stuff called clobetasol proprionate .05 percent for awile. I think it is considered to be 1K times stronger than hydrocortisone but I forget exactly how much. its really potent stuff that i used on a poliosis (grey spot). Hopefully it will return to normal pigmentation in a few months like my derm said.

Harie,

where do you get Cortaide from?

thanks

Got it at Walgreens. I don't know if there's a bigger spray bottle, cause the one I have is only a few oz.

let me know what that stuff does for you guys. I'm interested, but not yet convinced. If it is harmless and cheap, I might add some to one of my pre-wash shampoos and use it once or twice a week.

Why would you add it to a shampoo? You'd run the risk of getting it in your eyes, ears etc. Getting HC in your eyes is a bad idea.

Im pretty sure it woudnt help unless u have bad irritation/scalp problems.

Unless it blocks androgens/dht or is a growth stimulant it would have absolutely no effect besdes helping the irritated scalp aspect which could end up helping in the longrun.
