I just got a Script for Propecia. But I'm too scared to start

I just started noticing hair loss at my hairline and it's really a hard thing to come to terms with considering the male pattern baldness in my family.

I know finasteride and a transplant (later down the track) is my only chance of keeping my hair.

Is it really mainly just an over-exaggeration of the sides on the net? I'm at a very tough time in my life right now and hair loss is making it worse

Going bald is not an option

Do you mean a prescription for finasteride? Propecia is not the only option (minoxidil and Nizoral are also effective) but it's definitely the most effective treatment. I've been taking it for +13 years, it's still working and side effects were minimal but everyone is different and results vary quite a lot. Good luck!

My opinion: Why don't you give finasteride a few months and see how you tolerate it? If you do see real side effects, then you can always discontinue use. Trust in the research. In clinical trials and other studies, most men tolerated finasteride quite well and any side effects will likely clear up even if you stay on the drug.

My advice: What you should not do is spend your time combing these forums and the internet, looking for people who are complaining about side effects from finasteride. The mind is a powerful thing and if you spend your time freaking out about side effects, you will find ways to "see" them. Do some research and see what has been actually shown to be the reality of taking finasteride, then make an informed decision on your own. These forums are great for collecting information, but you don't need anyone else (even me) to tell you what to do.

Just try it and see what happens. You can always stop taking it.

BTW I've been taking Propecia for about 14 years and I've had no bad side effects at all.

Yeah for the most part my hair loss has pretty much stopped/slowed down to a super slow crawl. I've grown a little bit of hair too. My big regret (which actually relates to this topic) is that I didn't start it earlier. I hesitated using it for a few years because the possible side-effects spooked me. As I stated previously I never experienced any negative side-effects so if I started it earlier I would have kept more hair.
