Yes, you read that right. I'm a man with Woman Pattern Baldness.

It all started in June, when my family noticed that my hair might be thinning at the very top of my head (crown?). At first, it stayed in the back of my mind, then as time went by it seemed like hair was thinning more and more from that area. At the recommendation of my brother went to a doctor who said that I had hair loss, and it wasn't my diet or anything like that. the doctor in question wasn't a dermatologist, as I found out a bit too late (and after I paid for the visit!) and so later on I went to get a second and hopefully much more informed opinion and a checkup that didn't consist of casually checking out my head and saying "yup, you're going bald, try Rogaine and this other stuff and come back in 3 months."

Anyway, the second doctor, an actual dermatologist, was actually competent and professional, asking me about my diet, family history, etc. He told me I had hair loss, which I already knew, but the surprising thing is that my hair loss follows the pattern of female baldness! The signs, he said, are the fact that my hairline does not seem to have undergone any significant amount of hair loss relative to the ares behind it, while my temples are also not thinning. My own experience during the last 4 months confirms this, as I'd kept almost paranoid watch on my hair line, only to notice that the areas behind it are thinning. I've been recommend to take Rogaine and later maybe switch to a pill whose name escapes me at the moment.

He told me to look up "female-pattern baldness in a male patient" and I did, and didn't get a lot of informative results. I'm trying to look for more information on the internet about this condition (specifically why did I get it instead of male pattern baldness and what would the end result look like) but not luck. All I've turned up on female-pattern baldness is about women.

I'm completely lost. I even searched the forums and didn't get any results. Does anyone know anything about this?

I suspect it's got to do with the "pattern", or how your hair and scalp formed when you were a fetus. Just a guess.

Yeah I have female pattern baldness too, it's also called diffuse thinning. The hair just gets weaker and weaker on top starting right from the middle "line" of your hair. I've used finasteride for 1.5 years, nothing. Although I think the finasteride *might have* helped my crown a bit, I don't get the tingling back there anymore.

The Doctor recommended that I go on Rogaine (monox) 5% spray for three months. If there are no effects after that, he'll put me on a pill which I'm guessing is finasteride. I'm guessing monox didn't work with you? How was your experience with finasteride, side-effects wise?

Searching the internet for "diffuse thinning" yielded more results, thanks! :)

Side-effects: gyno (seriously), watery semen, softer erections and a bit of sleepyness. Don't let this put you off, you need to try it for yourself. I'm just unfortunately intolerant for drugs it seems.

Oh dear lord

Tell me about it... some pro-propecia guys on these forums say that it's impossible to get manboobs from finasteride, but I'm the living proof that it is very possible.

Would you believe that the first doctor I saw gave me finasteride without any word on the side effects? That !@#@4% quack. Even the second Doctor, the dermatologist, only said it'd affect my libido, which didn't sound too bad for a single guy.

Thanks for the heads up GWG, and I'm really sorry to hear about those side effects. I hope they receded after cutting off finasteride.

Well I haven't completely cut off finasteride yet, since it's my only hope really and I wasn't sure if it actually helped my crown or not. Anyway, on 0.5mg/day dose the breast pain ceased but what's the point really? The damage's already done and I got tiny cute manboobs. I need to have surgery for it anyways. Well my own Doctor was kinda hesitant to prescribe it to me since he didn't really believe in it and because of the sides. Good thing about finasteride is no more morning boners, I hated them. Bad thing is that erection is kinda hard to maintain and the feeling of sensation is all but gone.

I already have manboobs because I'm obese, so finasteride is pretty much a no-no, at least until I get my weight to a normal level. Getting extra manboobage right now would be a nightmare.

For what it's worth, it sounds like you've got a great doctor that actually researched the treatments quite a bit and cares about your wellbeing. Good luck with the treatment and surgery, GWG.

I think manboobs look even more disgusting on a thin person, the contrast is bigger.

Is it impossible to fix it without surgery ? i think some one talked about that they quit finasteride and put on some sort of steroid creme and it dissapered.
Dont remember what it was called.. but i read about it on this forum.
im in month 10 now and no sides yet, and thank god for that.
