I'm at a breaking point. What can a doctor do for my itch?

Hi,

I've been fighting this irritation/itch which is ONLY on my crown/thinning area, for a long time now..

I've tried it all, different shampoo rotations, different moisturizers, Folligen & Tricomin, emu oil, aloe.. I even just finished a bottle of Inflamil which did nothing more for me than give a temporary cooling sensation. I won't be buying it again.

I'm sick of this tingling sensation which leads to an itchiness.. I'm sick of this sh*t.

Is there anything a doctor can do? Hydrocortizone or something? Any special topicals that will HEAL this irritated skin and make it NORMAL again?

I want my scalp pH to be balanced and normal again.. is this too much to ask?

I use Nizoral only 2x weekly and I leave it in for about 3 - 5 minutes. I ALWAYS use a good quality conditioner after shampooing.

I was using T/Gel a couple times a week for a few weeks, and it didn't help. I used T/Sal also... which also didn't help.

I dropped the T/Gel & T/Sal recently and picked up Head & Shoulders 2-in-1 (sensitive scalp formula w/ aloe), and it feels OKAY after I get out of the shower.. it settles the itch for at least a few hours, but it all comes back later in the day. The same goes for the 100% aloe I've been using for the past 2 days.. feels good most of the day, then around bedtime I get the tingling sensation and itch spots again.

I have a bottle of Folligen which I dilluted half with water.. I tried that for awhile and it made things even more irritated! I don't use Folligen anymore. I'm out of Tricomin right now, but it didn't seem to help me much when I was using it.

Sometimes after my shower I use my comb to scratch the spots that are bothering me.. I do it gently, just by gliding the comb over the scalp skin, while stying my hair.

I do not have any flaking or scaling. My hair looks good for the most part, it's just this damned irritation towards the back and crown.. I also notice I get some REAL BAD itch spots about 2 inches above my ear, yeah on the side part of my head! WTF !!!!

This is ridiculous and it's driving me insane. Does anybody know what a doctor might be able to do before I throw away more money?

Thanks,
-misterium

SE: Hi again brother,

No sir, that's the ONE THING I have yet to attempt.. the olive oil.

I'm going to wash my hair in a little while, let it dry, then apply some.

How long should I let it sit before rinsing or should I shampoo it out?

I may go purchase a bottle of Scalpicin w/ Hydrocortizone.

I usually apply it after my night application of minoxidil has dried. Sleep with it and wash it the morning before my morning minoxidil application.

You could of course apply it an hour or two before you shampoo and then wash it off.

I have found that it remarkably increases the topical punishment my scalp can suffer.

Okay, so what stuff from the local pharmacy (in the U.S.) can I purchase to kill demodex?

SE: I'm going to use olive oil in a bit... then wash it out. Then apply aloe again.

Go back to every shampoo you were using before you started treating hairloss for a month or two. A Derm can indeed perscribe you a steroid shampoo but it is a short term fix. You need a solution. I would even dump Tricomin for a bit. You are alergic to something you are using.

Cassin: Thanks for the advice. Good call on the "allergic to something".

I will not touch Tricomin, T/Sal or T/Gel for a month.. I will however keep using Nizoral 2x weekly... I hope it isn't the nizoral that is bugging me.

I will keep using this 100% Aloe gel on my scalp each day and night (I'm using it as a styling aid anyway).

I'm still going to try the olive oil.

So do you think I should use Head & Shoulders daily, or just the Pantene that I was using before I started male pattern baldness treatments?

IMO the itching is definately caused by inflammation from DHT. I have the exact thing myself and also only in the thinning area.

Try what these guys have suggested and also keep in mind it could be due to your scalp being dried out from Nizoral use - Personally I just can't use nizoral as it makes the itching worse so I usually use J&J baby shampoo (which is Ph balanced).

I've heard some people calming the itch by using a moisturising conditioner too.

I think you're probably right ... DHT is the culprit..

The most 'pin prick' sharpness itch that I notice, is right smack in the center of my most thinnest spot on the left part of my crown.

^ Interesting take on things Gardener..

SE: I have olive oil on my scalp right now (Bertolli extra virgin ;) ) .. I put about 1/4 of a shot glass on my crown.. it's dripped around my head and I've just been wiping it off.

I'm such a greasy Italian lol .. but anyway, I'm going to go to bed when this jerry curl activator olive oil juice stops dripping.

Hope it helps overnight :p

Nooo! no need to bath with the stuff!

6-8 drops will do after you spread them around. I often sleep with it and there are no olive stains on my pillow.

I tried olive oil, and it's worked extremely well. Only three or four drops, lasts a week or two. I find it's even more effective than conditioner. Just make sure to wash it out after a few hours.

Yeah man I had a few olive oil spots on my pillow case this morning :)
.. no worries, they're going in the wash.

As far as the results.. haven't had any itchy feelings this morning. Just got done shampooing the olive oil out with Head & Shoulders 2-in-1. Rinsed and repeated. :)

Then I slopped the 100% Aloe gel onto my scalp and styled my hair. with it.

Feels good right now.

Anyway, I just shampooed with Head & Shoulders 2-in-1 and my scalp is calm for the evening..

Of course I did this in the morning also, along with having aloe gel on my scalp and styled in my hair all day long.

.. So, I'm not out of the woods yet with this itch/irritation. I simply decided to shampoo again this evening because I was getting some itch sensations on my thin area damnit.

I've got the same problem - a mild scalp itch that just won't go away (but no noticable dandruff). I've been using Nizoral 3x a week for about six months now. I'm going to try an experiment and lay off the harsh shampoos for a few weeks and see if it gets better. It may be that overuse of the medicated shampoos is irritating to the scalp.

Yeah man, I'm at a serious pissed off point right now.

Olive oil isn't making a diff.

Last night in bed I had a serious irritation battle, just on the thin area.

So I got out of bed and took a shower, and used T/Gel for some relief..

For a few hours everything was okay, then it came back again and I just ignored it til it went away.

What a pain in the *** !

I don't know what the hell to do.

Yep, shampooing will only give short term relief. I am under the impression that you should hold off shampooing for 2 or 3 days and see how it goes.

I mean nothing. No aloe, no oils nothing.

Okay cool. I'm not going to shampoo for the next few days.

What about just rinsing and using conditioner?
