So, I have been officially confirmed to have hair loss by my doctor. He recommended me I should first go on Finasteride to see how it effects me. But the thing is, I have been reading a lot of stuff about the medication and I'm censored I'm going to have sexual side effects.

How common are these sexual side-effects? I was told by my GP it effects only 3% of men. He told me not worry because hundreds of millions of men all around the world take it and the concern about the side-effects are exaggerated by the media.

sorry to tell you but your dick is never gonna work again and u ll have to live your life as a girl ..
just kidding but you might see softer erections and watery semen , usually nothing dramatic but depends on the person
at least thats what an urologist who prescribed proscar for years told me was the most common complaint , but he had never seen anyone who didnt recover after 2-3 weeks of stopping

also the 3 % is debatable , but generally even if you experience side effects it doesnt give you total erectile dysfunction, but rather not so hard erections as before

Btg is spot on. The chance of finasteride completely killing your D is pretty unlikely. At worst, it may not get as hard as before. With that said, don't go into this with the mindset that you will inevitably face problems in that department. As we all know, much of this area is mental

It takes months to be able to make a judgement like that. If you have no sides after 12 months then you will know that it is ok for you.

Oh are you serious. I thought it be like taking other meds where the side-effects show up the minute you take it. Even SSRI's which takes month to work shows side-effects immediately

Your body will adjust to taking Finasteride fairly quickly, most don't notice any sides at all. Its the long term use that you have to keep an eye on. But saying that 90% will never notice or have sides even over long term use. I'm not one of them but that's the luck on the draw.

Persistent neurological effects from other drugs are well recognized, such as tardive dyskinesia related to the use of phenothiazines for treatment of chronic schizophrenia. There is increasing scientific evidence from studies in rodents that finasteride may reduce the concentration of several neuroactive steroids important for neurogenesis and neuronal survival. An important neurosteroid is allopregnanolone (ALLO), a metabolite of dihydroprogesterone. ALLO is a potent ligand of the inhibitory GABA‐barbiturate receptor. GABAA receptors have variable sensitivities to ALLO in the settings of neurosteroid withdrawal, stress, social isolation and ageing. Less ALLO as a consequence of finasteride treatment could alter GABAergic transmission with implications for neuronal progenitors and young neurons. Interestingly, the mechanisms of irreversible phenothiazine‐induced tardive dyskinesia may be similar to the mechanisms underlying the persistent side effects of finasteride: in rats treated with the phenothiazine haloperidol to induce orofacial dyskinesias, co‐administration of progesterone prevented this side effect, while pretreatment of the rats with finasteride reversed this protective effect, demonstrating an important role of the progesterone pathway and its metabolites.4

I wouldn't count being part of the no side effect 97% lucky. More like expected.

For me, I saw no noticeable side effects in the first year. I thought I was in the clear.

But after a few more years on it, I’d lost all sex drive and stopped getting hard erections. It happened slowly and gradually.

I stopped taking the drug. After being off it a few years, erections have improved but my sex drive never came back. Several countries have revised the labeling to indicate that sexual side effects can last indefinitely after quitting the drug.

My advice is to not obsess over it, but take inventory every 6 months or so. Don’t let it sneak up on you. Most guys apparently don’t get serious side effects, but if you do, they’re pretty serious. Keep in mind, most romantic partners will prefer a bald man who’s good in bed over a man with a full head of hair who can’t get it up.
