Hello, I am new to minoxidil, I have done lots of research upon the matter of the product and figured out most of everything. I have stumbled upon this forum and I was reading in some places that minoxidil will NOT help with a receding hairline. I started minoxidil 5% yesterday and thought I would at least stop my hair loss and gain some hair on my temples a little bit where it has not yet died off. Aswell as fixing my crown which seems to be a newcomer in my hair loss situation. The reason I started minoxidil was because i saw my crown starting to go. I instantly remembered it is in my family genes to have hair loss. My mother's side has the receding hairline, but that is all, nothing more. My dad's side however has balding on the whole top of the head. Only my dad, his dad and potentially me have this issue. I would like to just freeze my hair from losing. Is this going to stop my receding hairline and bring back those almost gone hairs over time (if minoxidil works with me) or will it just cure my crown and never my frontal hair.

Here are some photos from when I first noticed the loss. (Note, I tried nioxin for 4 months and I received no results)

I have no current picture updates as my hair is a bit long to see that crown well, but this is what the loss looks like.

Greetings Gafoob, minoxidil. is a drug so you will likely respond to it(side-effects). There are no certainties how well you will respond to it. You will have to use it consistently in order to achieve optimum results. Your youth is to your advantage. If later you decide you like what it's doing for your hair you must stay on it indefinitely in order to sustain/maintain your results. minoxidil. is a relatively safe topical, just remember to wash your hands thoroughly after application. Also look into nizoral shampoo or more formally ketoconazole to add into your regimen. Their is some evidence that suggests it has anti-DHT properties. In a few years you might consider other treatment ie; finasteride., but for the time being minoxidil is the right choice. Be sure to run this past a well qualified and respected physician before introducing any potentially health altering agent(s) to your life style. Thanx for sharing and all the best.

So far, 2 days in, just finished my nightly application, I have not experienced any side effects so far. As far as washing my hands, I use a disposable glove. I apply to my head as directed and message it in to my scalp's effected area and turn the glove inside out and toss it each time. Thank you for your response. I will look in to these other suggested products. I know I will not like using this product for the rest of my life, so it would be in my best interest to change it up and try new things to see what I will operate best with.

I like to use gel in my hair, but since this requires dry time I have been going to work without my hair styled, been getting some comments, but nothing I cant deal with. I am sure once my hair thickens, I will be okay with not gelling my hair since the reason I gel it is so to keep from showing my thinning hair and to hide my hairline. Good news is I did a pretty good job at it since nobody noticed until I mentioned it.

EDIT: Additionally, I do not suffer dandruff, dry or oily scalp. My head of hair has always been nice to me in my years. Back in my middle school and early high school years, I always washed my hair with shampoo and conditioner to keep it shiny and long. Having my hair so long, I never noticed my receding hairline or my crown going. I decided to go short hair and noticed it going back, I didnt think much of it. I continued through the years and finally one day came i got the same haircut and my receding hairline was as what you see now. I was embarrassed. This lead my to find products such as minoxidil.
