Is Dutasteride Safe? (mtf Transgender)

Hi, so long story short, I am male to female transgender. I went to my Endocrinologist today and I told him I was worried about my hair, and that I would like to thicken up some thin spots as well as prevent further hair loss. He told me not to worry and prescribed me 0.5 mg Avodart (Dutasteride) to take 3 times a week. He also said I would benefit from the Dutasteride because it helps reduce facial and body hair as well as erections. He also told me to continue taking my other meds as well which are Androcur (Cyproterone Acetate) (50mg) and Estradiol (4mg sublingually) daily. I’m really worried about shedding and the possibility of my hair getting worse because of all the horror stories I’ve read about Dutasteride and other DHT inhibitors on hair forums (possibility of reflex androgenicity, hair getting worse etc). Anyway is my current regimen safe? (Besides possibly affecting the liver) is there a chance my hair will start to fall out more/worsen or anything awful like that? I've heard of Dutasteride/Finasteride increasing testosterone levels but the Androcur should counteract that correct? I hope my Endo knows what he’s doing. Also for reference my Testosterone is 17 ng/dl and Estrogen is at 149 pg/ml so technically I am chemically castrated and my hormones are in the female range. Thank you for any advice! So as of now my current regimen is this: 4mg Estradiol sublingually daily, 50mg Cyproterone Acetate (Androcur) daily, and 0.5 Dutasteride 3 times a week.

Any 'reflex hyperandrogencity' would be more than suppressed by Cypro and Estradiol.

Hi Retinoid thank you for responding! Anyway to answer my question, do you think I will be safe taking the Dutasteride? Is there a chance my hair can become worse or is it most likely I will see an improvement with adding the Dutasteride to my current meds? Thank you.

If your testosterone is so low I doubt you will see much of a change with a DHT blocker. It goes to show how out of control this reflex hyperandrogencity bullshit is that a transgendered on Cypro is worried about it...

The biggest thing I’m worried about is the Dutasteride increasing my Testosterone levels. However (like I said in my post) the Cypro should prevent my T level from going up? I hope I’m right about this :/

You are fine. I do not think Duasteride will do much for you, but it certainly will not derail your transition.

Thank you, that’s reassuring to hear:). But do you still happen to know if the Cypro will prevent the Testosterone increase caused by the Dutasteride from happening? Again thank you for helping me.

dutasteride does not directly increase testosterone production. It prevents Testosterone from converting into DHT, and DHT is much more stronger than testosterone. This is the one case in which the increase in T actually reduces total masculinization. with cyproterone acetate plus estradiol, you should have extremely low amounts of testosterone being produced anyway. dutasteride in addition will not hurt your hair and may actually help
