Is It Worth It To Start Taking Finasteride?

With all the recent advancements and the new treatments coming out in the next 5 years, would it still be worth it to risk side effects and take finasteride?

I have never taken it before and I've been monitoring my hairline for the past year and it looks like it has barely changed if at all. I am currently about a nw1.5 with good temple points but when viewed from above you can see it goes upwards at the sides. When viewed from the side I don't look receded.

What should I do?

If you have male pattern baldness, I would start medicating.

Things for the future are looking bright, but nothing's a guarantee.

If the new treatments work out, you will be able to get off finasteride then anyway

As opposed to the lower quality of life that comes along with hair loss?

Dude it's up to you. If you get bad sides from finasteride you're in the minority. You sound like the kind of person who's going to get nocebo if you take it

Yeah I understand the chances. I don't think my quality of life would lower but I just really like my hair. Also I currently take saw palmetto and have had no side effects or nocebo so I don't think finasteride would give me nocebo lol

Having started finasteride too late is my most bitter regret.

The "cure" has always been said to be "five years away" and used as an excuse by those who are afraid of finasteride, the only way to stop legitimate male pattern baldness.

Sorry for the regret.

True, but things have never looked this up before. People have been saying five years but this time I think it's actually true. There's like nearly ten different companies with things in the pipeline, with Tsuji probably being a full cure. This is why I'm hesitant to take a drug that can cause longterm side effects if something g better will be here in less than five years.

I'm in the SAME boat man. I'm 20 and I was a NW3v. I started rogaine about 10 months ago and now I'm a NW2. Why take finasteride right now? I would only consider it if I began losing ground and it was 2018 and nothing new came out

The future for hair loss is looking bright but finasteride itself can be a cure if started early enough. It can permanently thicken hair and prevent further hair loss. These new treatments that are coming out might not be for a few years so I suggest taking this safe medication if you really care about your hair (that can even reduce the risk in prostate cancer) until we are sure that another permanent solution has come out. Who knows, maybe by taking this medication you won't even need the new treatments.

I think you'd be surprised

Unless you're in the 1-5% of balding men who retain attractiveness when bald (the Rock, Jason Statham, etc), you can count on it.

Do everything in your power to beat back this destroyer of aesthetics

Until the 'cure' is prescription-free and available at a reasonable price, there is no cure. Everything else is fairy dust and wishful thinking. Treat your male pattern baldness as if there are no promising developments. Nothing is for sure until you can get those miracles prescription-free and at a reasonable price. If you don't want to pop finasteride, up your natural supplements: pumpkin seeds, apple polyphenols, biotin, and so on. It might help you maintain, or it might do nothing.

The most tragic thing is that you could easily find the exact same quotes from five, ten and fifteen year old posts very easily. I've been fighting hair loss since 2009, and at this time people were saying the exact same things. Trials take years and big companies aren't ready to come up with another hair loss treatment that could be marginally better than finasteride but could also result in lawsuits against them. Take the example of RU: it will never come out because of the risks involved with pregnant women.

Also lets not get into this but finasteride sides are incredibly exaggerated.

Why do you say they are exaggerated?

The placebo group and the finasteride group had almost the same rate of sexual side effects in the double-blind study. Nuff said. But it must be a conspiracy, right? Also check out the crazy side effects any pill has if you carefully read everything about them.

I would 100% say it is worth it and to try. I had thinning hair and since seeing a hair transplant specialist I was recommended taking finasteride. I have been on it around 5 months now and my last consultation I was told my hair had strengthened. I have had no sides. I will be honest at first the usual watery semen for about 4 days and then now fine. No loss of sex drive or anything.

And how many times was that study replicated? And how many years ago was that study conducted?

i was always terrified of Propecia. "ill never take Propecia'' i proclaimed numerous times in the last 5 -7 years. Lucky my hair loss progressed slowly and all the natural crap i used maybe helped a tiny bit. Once i actually started to lose hair at my temples, like it was a lil noticeable i knew it was finasteride or baldness eventually. At first i caused myself side effects bc i was so sh*t scared everday i took it, but i never had ED at all even when i was freakin out. I caused pelvic pain and urinary issues from muscle tension steming from anxiety that required a urologist... Long story short a low dose of Valium cured the pelvic pain and helped alot with anxiety. Now i Don't need Valium at all and i have ZERO side effects. If anything my libido is a bit higher. Its now 8 months on finasteride and i wish i started a year or two earlier. And i guess i didn't lie w/ the "ill never take Propecia" I take proscar haha

If hair matters to you start finasteride, stay away from these sites at first. Don't ever go on PropeciaHelp.Com and just try and forget you take it. You 'll most likely be fine. If your not stop and then you'll be fine health wise, and you have to rely on rogaine/keto until new treatments arrive in 5-10 years if ever unfortunately and yes i mean histogen and follica and all them no guarantee's... Its looking like 3-4 years before maybe histogen could be in Mexico maybe... I wouldn't bet my head of hair on it

Yes it's second good advice, don't go on propeciahelp.com, of course if you don't want have the nocebo effects.

Look, people are panic scared of taking finasteride because exist the websites as eg ''propeciahelp'' and people (often the same people who are scared of finasteride) aren't scared of taking dutasteride because the website avodarthelp doesn't exist ! Yeah maybe it's funny but it's true. Most people get the nocebo sides but not real sides caused by finasteride.
i totally agree. I think alot of the non sexual side effects especially are nocebo effects. Anything medical that happens to people while taking finasteride, or within a year or two after quitting its "omg the Propecia is harming me" when in reality people get sick sometimes and people get ED all the time w/ or without finasteride. Long term Stress/Anxiety cause a myriad of health complications and for alot of people starting finasteride can be very stressful and scary
