Is It Worth Trying For Some Regrowth?

Background: 25-year old Asian. Started noticeably balding early 20's. By 22 i was around a norwood 3? Tried minoxidil for a bit until i ran out of supply and decided to start using a clipper to 0 guard at 24. At 25 the pics below are what I have now. I was wondering if it was worth it to go on a new program of:
  • finasteride: 1mg daily
  • Minoxidil 5% foam before bed unless dermarolling
  • Nizoral 2-3 times a week
  • Dermarolling: Once a week
The other option would be to start shaving to the skin. But it really messes with my self-esteem that i'm 25 and missing this much hair. Any input would be great. :D

Does the 'skinhead' look suit your face frame? Hard to tell from the top. I've just undergone a 3600 FUE but I wouldn't have done it if the buzz look suited me.

I do feel for you. You're pretty much now at 25 what I am at 42 (although I was always thinning) and I wish I'd started on finasteride at an earlier age.

Well people tell me the 'skinhead' look looks ok on me. But for me I see pictures of myself with hair and just notice it frames my face so much better. I know a lot of it is in my head but it really makes me hate myself as sad as it sounds. I saw some crazy success stories on here and wondered if I would have a shot at something like that.

A hair transplant isn't really an option for me right now. Out of curiosity, though how do you feel about yours? Was it able to give you good coverage?

I would start the medication you added, just remember you have to give it a minimum of 6 months and dont expect to aee any regrowth during the first 4 months.

I would use Minoxidil morning and evening!

Good Luck :)

Hey Reuters! Your post was actually the post that motivated me to make my post! Pretty awesome results by the way. Definitely think you can start to grow that out soon.

I'm thinking of starting it but just waiting to see a few more thoughts from other people. Noted about the 4 month mark. I was thinking I'd try it for about half a year or so and if I get any bad sides I'd just scratch the regiment completely. Thanks for the input!

I'm only 4 weeks post op mate so way too early to tell, but I was mentally in the same boat as you. Using fibres and root concealers every day, hiding it from the wife, being mortified when the weather forecast was rain, making excuses not to play football or take the kids swimming...

I was in a really dark place deep down, but have always been a glass half full kinda lad so I hid my depression really well.

I first started enquiring about a hair transplant around 6 years ago, but just couldn't justify the price so headed out to Turkey for a fraction - after a lot of research I must add - and I'm so glad I did. Only time will tell on the results, but whatever happens it can't be any worse than it was and even though I now look like a serial killer, and will do for the next couple of months, it's given me such a lift and something to look forward to.

I have very similar hair loss pattern to yours. My plan is to do exactly what you suggested... try for as much regrowth to see what happens, and then I plan on getting a hair transplant once I have the funds saved up (probably around a year from now).

I've found that on the subject of hair loss, there are as many opinions as there are people. Some have told me that I am too far gone to get any results from anything other than a transplant. But with how miserable I am with a balding head, I figure it is certainly worth it to exhaust all options before giving up.

The worst thing that can happen is nothing grows... and then you're no worse off than you are now, but at least you know that you tried everything you could!

Good luck with whatever you decided to do.

It looks like you actually started balding around 17 or so. You probably only noticed it in your early 20s.

I think your best bet is to try that regime you posted and then if that is succesful then get a transplant to fill in some weak areas.

Another option you can look into is SMP. It can save you a lot of time and money because you wont need to use any medication.

Just curious, what is your family history of hairloss? Does ur dad and other males in the family always go bald young?

Yea you're probably right with starting earlier than 20's. My hairline was probably receding but since i always kind of had a huge forehead I assumed it was nothing.

My Dad is actually pushing 70 and has a great head of hair at that age. Only a small bald spot in the back. My brother actually lost his hair faster than I did but was always less image conscious and could just rock the bald head. On my mom's side only a few of my uncles had receding hairlines and none of them went full blown bald. So ye, was wondering how we just got unlucky.

I feel ya man. I constantly think about how I should have fought harder for my hair and taken more extreme measures. Really hate how powerless we are against something like this. I am a little wary of getting sides though so if I notice any of the harsher sides I'd probably hop off it.

You're pretty much done. I don't think that medication with bring forth a result worth committing to a lifetime of treatment via regime. Your inability to recognize urgency, has forfeited your card to make decisions against a nature process. In short, your best option now, is to contemplate pursuing a hair transplant; that isn't without finasteride in focus though.

You could always however, continue with the current look you have now and save money for Tsuji hair cloning technology. If it doesn't come to market by 2020; spree saved money on a hair transplant.

Sorry, the first line confused me. I should or shouldn't try the medication? You're pretty much right in what you said though. I've looked at the upcoming treatments and Tsuji's does seem the most realistic at this point. I was just thinking who knows maybe I could respond well to finasteride and the other treatments.

Who did you go with in Turkey?

It must be a terrible feeling to go bald so young and see your dad with a full head of hair at old age. Im balding too but my dad and his dad were all early nw6s so I saw it coming and treated it at the very first sign. Something that a lot of people who come here with advanced hairloss have in common is that they dont have too many family members with hairloss so they end up not thinking it could happen to them and just let it go.

Have you looked into SMP? It is a great way to get some frame on your face and you can live without worrying about any treatments. Like I said you can go all out on the treatment for a year and then move into a transplant but barring a miracle its gonna be tough. A transplant is not enough to get full coverage on a nw6.

Check out SMP and see if its something your into.

Sorry, I accidentally attached a comment that wasn't intended for you. Thats why the first line is confusing, but in all seriousness, I would wait to hear what Tsuji has to say in year 2020 before making a hair orientated decision. I feel approaching it that way would cover most bases. It would be hell to be the last wave of hair transplants, only to have hair cloning release the following year. If you have any questions, feel free to message me anytime.

Its just really bad in general feeling. Like I lost the prime years of life to this. My confidence and everything is shot and pretty much wear hats every time i go out. My thought process was kind of like that. I thought since that I had my hair past the point of my brother that I would be in the clear or at least keep it until I was in my 30's. Very naive of me looking back. Wish I had been smarter and treated it at the very first sign like you.

I looked a bit into SMP but I feel like it would be a lie. I don't know weird way to phrase it i guess? But for me its akin to wearing a hair system. While the idea of a hair system has become more and more appealing as time goes on I'd like to avoid going down that route. Looking like i'm just gonna have to go full skinhead and accept it till a cure comes out or something lol
