Is my hairline receding? (24)

Hi, I am worried that my hairline has receded since autumn last year. I took a picture of my left temple (my right temple is fine) in September and I could see lot of tiny hairs. They seemed to be shrinking. Then I took another picture at the end of December and I believe my hairline has receded slightly because those tiny hairs have disappeared.

Were these miniaturised hairs?
Do you think my hairline receded from September to December/January?
What preventative measures so you recommend taking right now?

A lot of people have tiny hairs around their hairline, me included, but it's only on the edge of it most of time. Your hairline seems to be receding slightly but it might be just maturing (that's if no one in your family is bald). I'm 16 and have a NW2 receded hairline that has stayed the same since the age of 13 or 14 (It might be just a mature one). If you want to know if you'll go bald just check your cousins and brothers and try to see if they're also bald or receding by checking their pictures. If they are then that's probably going to happen to you too.

Check if your density around the hairline has reduced, if it has then you probably are receding. Even women have baby hairs at the edge of their hairlines so don't worry about it, if you're finding it easy to see your scalp and are noticing your scalp about 2 or 1.5 cm above the hairline, then your hair is DEFINITELY RECEDING

Just 1 more thing, when you pull your hair to check the hairline, it is normal to se a bit of your scalp.

None of my cousins or my brother who is (4 years younger than me) are receding/balding. The density round my left hairline and left temple have slightly reduced. I took creatine for 2-3 weeks in july 2014 and by October 2014 I noticed that my left temple had receded slightly. It used to be about 0.5 cm lower before taking creatine. Then it stayed the same until now where I am worrying it is receding even further since October last year.

If you look carefully at the first pic you can imagine where my previous hairline was before creatine. That "triangle" you see had a smaller angle.

I heavily regret taking creatine and I believe it is the culprit.

I agree with the cousin thing. If your father was bald than you'll likely end up bald eventually. also, if people on your mothers side of your family, as in, your mothers father than she could give you the genes of becoming bald. my father had a severe receding hairline when he was 18 and my mother's father had the same condition relatively young as well. I started noticing my hairline receding around 20. iv'e been using minoxidil 5% for the past month and started noticing peach fuzz on my temples where the hair loss is significant. I'm actually wondering if the peach fuzz will gradually turn back into thicker hair if someone would like to answer that for me.

I don't know, maybe it might be just your imagination and you've aways had that peach fuzz. I can also notice some tiny hairs in the areas that have receded when i was 13... Man that recession was so quick i couldn't even notice it had happened until 1 later. I mean, as a 14 year-old boy i never used to pay much attention to "hairlines", and never thought about how they shaped a person's face. Only this week have i noticed that if my father had a less receded hairline he could be really handsome, and that his NW3 mature hairline is what makes his face look uglier. I believe his mature hairline looking so awful might be due to my grandma's really high hairline.

After looking at all the pictures, there is receding going on. It's going further back in the temple area, and becoming more of
a 'V' shape.

Honestly, minoxidil five percent would be a good thing for your temples at this point. Not the rest of your hair, unless it's getting diffuse.

I already started using castor oil and getting dermaroller to fill in the temple area. I want to incorporate some of the swisstemples protocol, Is this a good idea?

I am worried about minoxidil's side effects such as dark eye circles and bloated skin which ages faster. Currently NW1 at the moment with no diffuse.

Temples have receded back, and I can see the zigzag line forming within your forelock.

Common pattern for those heading to NW3-ville

Don't threat.

Hello,

I think having looked at the photos it would be reasonable to say you are at the start of the hair loss process. You may be fortunate and this is more a mature hairline. My advice is that the best defence is a good offence. My hair loss journey began when my hair line looked like yours. I took steps at that stage to prevent any further potential changes and after 5 years into that journey I'm pleased to tell you it has remained and stabilised.

I'd recommend a daily multivitamin as most of them contain 300% of your bodies daily requirement of biotin which has been shown in some cases to reduce hair loss or at the very least improve the quality of existing hair. Alternatively you could buy biotin capsules which contain up to 10,000% of the bodies daily requirements. It can be purchased from most health food stores and is inexpensive. In addition to that i'd also suggest Nizoral shampoo twice a week with a 2% concentration (though usually this requires a prescription) or alternatively a 1% solution can be purchased over the counter and i'd recommend using this 3 times per week. You may also want to consider coconut oil. Heat up a tea spoon of coconut oil in the microwave for about a minute or until it turns into a luke warm liquid and then massage this into your scalp. It will make your hair very greasy so you'll want to leave it in for 5 minutes and then shampoo and condition your hair as normal. If you aren't using conditioner, nows the time to start as it will reduce breakage and improve the appearance. When you rinse out the conditioner, use the coolest water you can as this will seal in moisture and make your hair shine.

Finally, it may be too early for you to consider this but have a reflect on wether or not it is worth you taking propecia. It will reduce the DHT levels responsible for male pattern baldness by around 65% from the moment you take the first dose with that percentage decreasing as you continue to take the medication. I am in no way a health care professional so do some research before you decide to go down that path. From my experience it has been worthwhile taking propecia.

I hope this advice helps. If you follow these steps their is a reasonable chance you'll never question your hairline in your future.

Good Luck!

You have to find that line of not waiting too long to take action, but you dont want to be taking medication without actually having male pattern baldness. Tough to tell sometimes. You certainly need to lean more towards caution because its not a reversible thing and might not be for decades. I personally do not subscribe to the mature hairline theories even if many doctors seem to support that view. male pattern baldness and mature hairlines both start at the same place dont be fooled
My hair is kind of similar to yours in that awkward situation where its borderline worth treating. I am not a big fan of taking drugs, but today there are no other choices

That's entirely up to you. You probably don't need it at this point. It's more powerful in the fight against hair loss.

But you have enough hair already existing, that I really feel minoxidil would grow most, if not all of it, back.

Normally the period before minoxidil, on average, is twelve to sixteen weeks. You can expect shedding in that period to, that's normal.

But after that period, if it's not doing anything for you, the chances of it helping you are very slim. With Propecia, it's usually around six weeks to start
seeing the benefits, but there more permanent.

I am pretty frightened about using minoxidil after reading this thread:

Are there any alternative anti-androgens you would recommend?
