Is Propecia wearing off?

I'm 23yo with early frontal hair loss confirmed by a hair transplant doctor in July 2008! I began using Propecia since then! Until today my hair looks practically the same at least to my eyes as it did since I began Propecia so I assume it stopped my male pattern baldness. After about 9 months into Propecia I began to see almost nothing in the shower and in the morning when I comb my hair! I used to see a lot of hairs there for the past few years before I began Propecia! Never thought it was anything until at the age of 21 1/2 I saw mild thinning in the front!

Now in the past week or 2 I'm starting to see some more hair in the morning and in the shower again! Does it mean Propecia is wearing off? I'm really panicking and thinking of jumping to Avodart which my dermatologist is willing to prescribe anyhow.

You are probably experiencing a typical seasonal shed that you are now hyper-aware of since you've been diagnosed with male pattern baldness.

You haven't been on finasteride long enough for it to "wear off" or even see it's full benefit so I would just stick with it.

Well I been on it for 15 months, as far as I know the full benefits are between 6-12 months right!?

People have seen results up to two years or longer. 6-12 months may just be the beginning for some.

Really?? During those 15 months all I saw is a halt of my hair loss! Is it really possible for me to have my miniaturized hairs thickened!? I really need that in my temples and center of my hairline. It's all still there just kinda broken and see through!

In that case, you should be grateful :)

finasteride is not a miracle cure. Slowing hairloss down is also a succes..

One thing everybody says "slowing hair loss!" But if you see your hair is always the same on finasteride isn't that stopping hair loss!?

Not in the long run. The effects of finasteride won't continue forever and eventually you will start losing hair again. For some people this takes as little as 1 to 2 years, and for others they can go on finasteride for 10+ years before it wears off.. but in any case, you really haven't "stopped" the hair loss, just delayed it.

delaying & slowing is 2 different things! I assume slowing is still hair loss but just slower! delaying is stopping hair loss for some time & then continuing later!

Just a standard shed cycle. Everyone goes through a shed, even if they are not losing hair. Don't worry. The hair grow back roughly in 4 weeks time.

I don't really believe finasteride wears over time, I just think it seems to wear off due to DHT levels slowly raising over aging. What worked for you at 25, will not have the exact same effect when you're 35. This is probably why doctors up the dosage of finasteride a bit over time to try to counteract those naturally raising levels. Just my opinion though.

I agree with beaner, you're probably just hyper-aware of the condition of your hair. Don't freak out, be patient and ride it out.
