Is Shampooing Everyday Harmful For Your Hair?

I'm 24 years old and I'm experiencing some diffuse hair loss on the top of my head. Nobody has noticed (in fact, I was recently complimented for my "thick spanish hair"), but I do notice, and it is quite pronounced under direct light. My doctor confirmed that a bit of my scalp is showing.

I'm wondering if my daily shampooing + conditioning (5 times a week, Nizoral 2% twice a week) is exacerbating the problem? Here is another interesting fact: me and my friend have been habitual pot and cigarette smokers (Newports, no less) for the past 4 years. Whenever I have a few hours of free time (about once a week), we meet up and smoke up. What's interesting is that we're experiencing very similar hair loss patterns. Diffused thinning at the top. Ever hear of this? I've quit cigarettes over a month ago, and I'm going to really cut back on the pot (for reasons other than hair loss).

Also, I use to be a notorious skull-cap user. I really had it on ALL the time. I don't use it anymore, and I understand that science doesn't support me here, but I can't see how it could not have done damage to my follicles.

So, again, is there any evidence of daily shampooing being damaging to ones hair? And what sort of regimen can I get on that will help me restore my hair? Should I see a dermatologist first?

Smoking is not causing your hair loss. It's most likely due to your genes. If anything Nizoral is helping slow the process down. What other shampoo do you use on the other days? You might want to consider an non-SLS shampoo and getting on some hair loss treatments ASAP.

Oops, I must have deleted that I use Biotin 5 times a week. I'm very adverse to using stuff like Propecia, I don't want to be on pills my whole life. I mean, is there even scientific evidence as to what sort of side effects Propecia would have from daily use over the course of decades? Is a Nizoral/minoxidil combo sufficient? How does one properly use Nizoral anyway? I usually leave it in for 3-5 minutes.

Thank you for your help.

can anyone inform me on how to properly balance that sort of regimen using those products? do i simply use the shampoos on every third day and use the spray's daily? is it ok to use the growth stimulators, anti androgens and DHT inhibitors at the same time?

As long as you're using minoxidil I see know reason why you wouldn't want to wash your hair everyday. Imagine how greasy it would look if you didn't.

sigh... using the products i mentioned in my previous post. trimocin, revivogen, s5 cream, and nizoral. 3 of those are shampoos +sprays. do i just use each every three days? meaning alternating = day 1. Nizoral, day 2. trimocin, day 3. revivogen?

I disagree with someone above who said smoking is non-related.

I think it is highly related. But i think for some people they go grey sooner but keep thick hair, others recede, others lose it all. I think it does have the potential to do damge.

females tend to get way thicker hair after they give up.

ciggies contain carcinogens and heavy metals + many chemicals like formaldyhyde. they can be bad for ur hair in different ways. particularly heavy metals.

I know u see old men who smoked there who life and still hav there hair, ppl use this to justify there smoking. that guy is still alive , that guy still has his hair, so it must be ok. The reality is it harms some ppl, it doesnt harm others.

my advice is first switch to rollies (less chemicals added), and try to stick to <5 a day, and aim to quit by the time ur 30. I think that minimises damge to hair and health.

I think smoking really has the potential to accelerate male pattern baldness in genetically susceptible ppl, but i cant prove it. Just my opinion based on personal experience and friends family etc. MODERATION, MODERATION, MODERATION

I never said smoking is non-related. I agree that smoking can indirectly cause hair loss just like alot of other things(diet, stress, masturbation, etc.). But in my previous post I was talking from a direct aspect. Smoking is not the direct cause of his hair loss. To beat hair loss you need to address the direct cause. He can quit smoking and the end result would still be the same.

What are you sighing for? Tell me where in your previous post you mention all of these products? You need to be more specific. No one can help you if you aren't specific enough. You say 3 of those are shampoos & sprays? Are we supposed to guess here? I'm guessing you are using tricomin spray + shampoo. Revivogen shampoo (not the therapy?).

I have the spray therapy from Revivogen and trimocin + the shampoos and conditioners and s5 cream. I used the revivogen package + s5 last night and was disappointed that the s5 and/or scalp therapy makes your hair sticky and greasy. or am i just applying too much or incorrectly? i appreciate the responses and i apologize for misspeaking about a previous post.

I've experienced more hair loss since I started using Revivogen 2 months ago. I hear shedding is a sign of getting better. Should I be encouraged or discouraged? Is it time to move to something else? I appreciate any advice.
