I’ve recently shaved my head since I had nothing better to do thanks to rona, and I noticed that my hair has thinned out considerably on the top and sides of my head, to the point where I can see my scalp very easily. I’ve always had really thick hair as a kid but it’s thinned as I went through high school. I’m not sure if it’s caused by full on male pattern baldness since my mom has telogen effluvium so I might have it as well, and my dad has a full head of hair, but my grandfather on my dad’s side is balding so the possibility very much exists. I’m just looking for some advice since I’m not sure if it’s male pattern baldness or telogen effluvium (I’ve been tested for everything else, so the only other culprits would be these two).
**I have a natural widows peak

You're a diffuse thinner most likely. You can't really inherit telogen effluvium.

You're a diffuse thinner, which is the worst. Get on minoxidil and ketacozonole right away, and keep a close eye on the hair situation. You want to try to wait until you're at least 21, but if you want to keep your hair you will need to get on finasteride as soon as possible.

I guarantee if you grow your hair out some more it will look much thicker than it is now. Your density is excellent. The back shows some diffuse thinning but it's due to you cowlick. Do you have photos before you buzzed it?

Yeah, even when I had much longer hair I could still see my scalp near my hairline and my crown area looked worrisome, although that’s only when the lighting was harsh. Here’s a few pics of my hair within the last year:

Ok, that makes sense. Why would I want to wait til I’m 21 though?

I have seen enough heads all these years to know that you don't have male pattern baldness at this time. You are not even a diffuse thinner. Your density is way above average.

Yeah, my hair has always been really thick when I was a kid, so much so that it would naturally turn into an Afro. I guess my hair thinning to a state of ‘normal’ made me feel like I’ve been thinning to the point where I might go bald soon. Thanks for the advice, I’ve attached a pic of my crown right after I cut my hair to show why I was freaking out, in addition to the massive mess I had on my head 5 years ago.

Hmm this is a tough one to evaluate. It seems like your hair is still really strong and healthy and the combination of the lighting with it being cut short may be showing more scalp than expected. But I'm not 100% sure.

After coronavirus is over, maybe go see a dermatologist and ask them to evaluate your hair for any signs of thinning/miniaturization.

Yeah, I’ll probably do that since I’ll be at my parents house during summer anyways. My mom said she also had thick hair when she was young until it thinned in her late teens, but she still has a decent amount of hair with no noticeable balding. Maybe it’s a weird genetic thing? Then again, she also said that my hair was looking pretty sparse after I shaved it off. Thanks for the insight man.

Why, so everyone can stay miserable?

Look at my username, I've been here for 14 years.

The hairloss information that I received on this site is the reason that I'm not bald.

You should be booted from this forum because you provide nothing useful.

You got me by 1 year but it's always nice to a fellow poster from back in the day when the brotherly love here was in great abundance. As you can see things have changed once social media went viral with multiple platforms. Because of Bryan and some others, I still have been able to maintain fairly well since I joined.

There was tension back when I started here, but it's nothing like Im seeing here now. This forum is about helping your fellow man. It's absolutely reasonable for a guy to get on here and ask questions about hair loss even when its only noticeable to himself. The trick for these young guys is to get on top of it as quick as possible and maintain.

I remember you well, DoctorHouse. Don't let my post count fool you. I did a lot of reading without much posting back in the day.

Maintenance is key especially if you still have a good head of hair, alot of users seem to hate people who don't want to wait for it to become noticeable or to far gone to do something about it..... It's always better to be preventative witha anything in life. Hairloss is hard to come back once it's gone too far... Doctor house is one of the best users I've met on this forum....

After my hair grew out a bit, I think it’s fairly certain that I have male pattern baldness. The right temple is thinned our significantly more than the left temple. Not sure how to go about treatment for this.

Dude. Do not sweat it. Your hair looks good and thick. Hairline looks great as well. Honestly man, the best advice I can give you is just to stay away from these hair loss forums. Youll just drive yourself crazy reading everything on here. And believe me, I did the same thing. I joined this forum at age 21 because i thought my hair was thinning badly. Now I'm 34, perfectly healthy with Nizoral shampoo, a very low dose of finasteride and my hair really hasn't changed.

If you look at historical stats, it's totally common for a young man your age to experience what feels like shedding and thinning. But a common trend with young people afflicted is that it happens very slowly and can actually thicken up as you progress.

Shedding hair does not equal permanent hair loss. Your scalp is just making room for more healthy strands by disposing of the weak.
