I'm 22 and I started cutting my hair short about 2 years ago. Over the past 6 months I have heard numerous people comment that they think I've started to go bald. Is this male patten baldness or a figment of my imagination? Any advice?

Could you post some bigger pictures? I think your hairline could be just a mature hairline, but I'm not sure. In the first picture it sort of looks like the middle of your head has thinner hair than the sides, but since the picture is so small, it's hard to tell.

It is. I don't believe a mature hairline is that high in younger age and the rest of your head seems to be thin too.

you need to be mature to have a mature hairline...

yeah looks like its going to me mate - theres plenty of treatments out there and the positive aspect is that its good to catch it early.

The hairline may mature at any time between 16 and 30. Not being NW1 at 22 doesn't equal going bald. I'm not at all insisting it's a mature hairline in this case, though. Bigger pics would help.

Sorry to give you bad news... It does look like male pattern baldness. male pattern baldness doesn't necessarily mean you will be bald in a few years time. Some people have it very aggressive, and some not so aggressive.

Here are larger images. I think the light in the first pic makes it look thinner on the top, but I could be making that up out of denial.

You defientley have receded in your hairline past the mature stage but I really can't tell if you are diffusing (thinning) for sure.

Er...he's not receded past norwood 2 (mature) at all. That is a textbook norwood 2, and he's 22 years old which is about right for maturing hairline.

Whether you're balding depends on diffuse thinning, which I can't tell from pics.

Looks like classic male pattern baldness to me - receding hairline, and more diffuse/thin in the typical male pattern baldness area on top versus sides of the head.

I'd start on propecia/minoxidil combo - but that's just my opinion, not medical advice.

Can other medical conditions cause this diffuse thinning? What is diffuse thinning anyway? Can anyone provide pics to illustrate?

Diffuse thinning is characterized by thinning hair across the entire top of the head--from the crown to the hairline. Thus, diffuse thinning, as it's diffused across the head all over. To see examples do a search on this site and you'll come up with thousands of threads.

From your picture, it is really hard to determine that you have male pattern baldness. I think you need your hair mapped out to see if you have any miniaturization going on. Photos do not really show that. I would see a doctor who does mapping. I wish I did myself. My doctor just took my word for it and she gave me Propecia. I would not rely on a hairloss forum for your diagnosis.

That said... It looks like pretty classic hairloss to me. Receding hairline for sure (he's maybe a Norwood 2?) with possible thinning in a horseshoe pattern. Definitely see that dermatologist.

Norwood 2 isn't a "receding hairline for sure". You can't call it that before it's getting closer to NW2.5ish. It does look like it could be thinning though.
