is topical spironolactone a legitimate alternative to fina?

I'm basically scared of fina because of the side effects on libido and penis.

read on THIS site bout spironolactone topical and it's supposed to be good.

does it work on its own or only with fina?

Dude, I am trying just that (spironolactone only), and Dr Lee, who sold me the spironolactone say I should be taking finasteride, that he CAN'T sell to me. Look, most stuff is reversible. My boss uses it and feels fine. I have intense reactions to a lot of medicines, so I am more cautious. Still, you won't know till you try.

I know what you mean man. This is why I am going for low dose finasteride, beta-sitosterol (which is I believe capable of blocking androgen receptors), and probably a few topicals.

If you want a one-stop topical to replace finasteride, the only two that I believe have the clout are RU58841 and fluridil, but who knows I might be wrong :)

I sent an email to minoxidil.com (dr lee)

"...I am very interested in your topical spironolactone. I am 22 and have a hairline that appears to be receeding slowly but surely. I'm worried about the (long term) side effects of finasteride, so have not tried it so far. I'm currently using minoxidil. If topical spironolactone works as I read on your website will it be effective at stopping the effects of DHT on my hair? Or does it only really work in addition to finasteride? I read that topical spironolactone is not really effective at the hairline, more at the crown... "

i got a fukcing weird reply which left me baffled and i didnt even respond anymore

"Thank you for your interest in Regrowth, LLC and Dr. Lee's products.

Unfortunately, Dr. Lee is not accepting female patients who are not in the immediate area of his office in Whittier, CA. Since diagnosing and treating patients for female pattern baldness is infinitely more complex than treating male patients for alopecia androgenetica, he feels that it would be in the best interest of female patients to consult a local dermatologist, who would be able to obtain a comprehensive medical history, perform a direct physical examination, order the appropriate laboratory tests, diagnose the etiology (or etiologies) of the hair loss and receive treatment from him or her, as necessary. Your proper medical treatment is important to us.

We are likewise sorry we can't dispense drugs to other doctors' patients. Regrowth, LLC is a medical practice and the California Medical and Pharmacy Boards disallow us from dispensing medications other than to our own patients. Drugs similar to those dispensed by Dr. Lee can likely be submitted to, and dispensed by a compounding pharmacy with a prescription from your doctor and/or dermatologist. One such compounding pharmacy is Murray Avenue Apothecary, of Pittsburgh, PA. Their web site is: www.murrayavenuerx.com There are likely other compounding pharmacies one can no doubt find via a Google search.

Best Regards,

Dave Dorius,
Regrowth, LLC"

Maybe he just sent the wrong reply to the wrong person lol

spironolactone from what I've heard is alright man, but I would be surprised if it stopped hair loss by itself. Maybe coupled with nizoral/nizoral cream and a stimulant like Spectral RS or minoxidil :)

S5 I believe is 5% spironolactone, Dr Lee's is 2% but is a liquid and so can be easier to apply sometimes I would think! :)

Dr Lee actually emailed me that spironolactone is ok, but I'd be better off getting a prescription for Propecia, and not just using spironolactone. He can't or won't prescribe finasteride over the web in the USA. You must have gotten a mixed up email. I'd try again, he seems like a good guy (Dr Lee).

I would use it along with minoxidil and ketoconazole. Maybe then you could keep up with finasteride.
I don't think it's effective enough by itself.
