I copied and pasted this part from wikipedia. thanks!
Ketoconazole is usually prescribed for topical infections such as athlete's foot, ringworm, candidiasis (yeast infection or thrush), and jock itch. The over-the-counter shampoo version can also be used as a body wash for the treatment of tinea versicolor.[3][4]
Ketoconazole is used to treat eumycetoma, the fungal form of mycetoma.
The side-effects of ketoconazole are sometimes used to treat non-fungal problems. The decrease in testosterone caused by the drug makes it useful for treating prostate cancer and for preventing post-operative erections[5] following penile surgery. Another use is the suppression of glucocorticoid synthesis, where it is used in the treatment of Cushing's disease.[6] These side effects have also been studied for use in reducing depressive symptoms[7] and drug addiction;[8] however, it has not succeeded in either of these roles.[9][10]
Ketoconazole can be prescribed as a 200 mg pill, a 2% cream, a 2% gel,a 2% foam,or 2% shampoo for the treatment of dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis, or as a 1% over-the-counter shampoo (Perkhotal) & (Nizoral). However, 2% shampoo is sold over-the-counter in many countries as well.
Ketoconazole is also available as a topical mousse, using patented Versafoam technology, marketed under the brand name Ketomousse. In clinical studies, the Versafoam proved to be a superior mechanism of delivery to the shampoo. Currently it is only available in Europe.
The anti-dandruff shampoo is designed for people who have a more serious case of dandruff where symptoms include, but are not limited to constant non-stop flaking, and severe itchiness.
That above there was just the uses of ketoconazole it doesnt really explain how it stops male pattern baldness but my theory is that it breaks down certain components in the scalp chemically to stop male pattern baldness and dandruff ofcourse
But i think ketoconazole is too...agressive and as such drugs will always have a side effect in the long run (due to daily use and accumulation in the body)
shampoos on the other hand leave lots of oil on the scalp..thats why its so silky soft and shiny! but thats wat caused my falling hair alot. I noticed that the more i used shampoos (any beauty type) the more i had falling hair. So at the time i was using a soap( a local whitening soap..plant based..im not telling yet)
that did pretty well of removing the oil on the scalp...plus it made my hair fuller and definitely not limp...compared to using shampoos which became oilier and oilier as the day progressed. At the time i wasnt using my Big2 (finasteride and minoxidil)
because it really decreased my falling hair and dandruff which i noticed back then was becoming apparent
so the point is... i think what we need to do is break down the oil in the scalp which contains the DHT..i read DHT is easily broken down by enzymes and the soap i used is a plant enzyme (a strong one which we use to whiten our skin here) well its a discovery..i guess... maybe like finasteride that was really for the prostate but they discovered it could be used for male pattern baldness! hey comment me so we can talk bout this more! i have pics on my account in success stories..and tell me your stories...in the forums page! FAVOR PLS! leave me a msg or comment bout ur reg. or anthing!
