Last Finasteride Questions Before I Start Taking. Dosage?

I wanted to do my due diligence before even getting prescribed this drug after seeing posts on the internet claiming it would do everything from make hairloss worse, make your penis shrink, to destroy your mental clarity. After I ask this I plan to go away and not live on here as I believe it would cause me to continue to worry about hairloss.

In my research it seems clear to me that the majority of users whether they are from forums (where the percentage is higher but still low) or from scientific studies (very low) take the drugs with minimal or no side effects at all. I have spoken with 2 general physicians, a dermatologist, and a hair loss specialist dermatologist in the last month and they have all provided me relevant statistics and assured me that the risks are minimal for any catastrophic irreversible side effects.

I truly believe PFS is a real thing for some users but also having anxiety issues in the past I also know the effects of nocebo. In the last week alone I have felt phantom testicular pain to shortness of breath to heart palpitations. I am aware of the strength of the mind to form to symptoms where none truly lie. That coupled with the clear fact that I have miniaturized hairs (NW2 but clearly will end up a NW3 in time) has led me to the conclusion that taking this drug is worth it as a 27 year old single guy.

I have gotten my prescription for 1 mg finasteride to take daily. I had a few last minute questions:

1. Should I start taking the 1 mg at a lesser dose? I have seen the graph floating around that seems to show dosage being just as effective at .5 mg as 1 mg. I ask in an effort to save money as well as not seeing a need to take more of something than needed.

2. Do I need blood work/sperm bank beforehand, or have I clearly been reading too much into this?

Thanks

Blood tests are useless. Nobody knows how the drug messes with your system so even if your levels are normal you might be experiencing different things. Doctors are just reading the label, they don't know anymore than you do.

You'll get side effects, it's almost a guarantee. There are so many that dealing with all will become a headache.

You don't realize that having even 90% of your sexual function is a horrible thing to experience once you've had it at 100%.

It sucks but find another solution for your hair, even a botched transplant is a better option.

I don't feel like that's an accurate representation of clinical (or likely anecdotal evidence).

I had ssri induced anorgasmia for five years and figured out a way around it just fine.

Saying hair loss specialists don't know anymore than I do is also giving me a lot of credit...

Anyone actually have any feedback on my questions?

Based on what I have experienced myself, taking .5 mg is fine. You are right in that you should be taking the lowest effective dose possible.

finasteride did nothing for me but sensitize all of my hair to DHT in a way that I would have thought was impossible. The hair in my nape area is gone and my donor area and sides have dramatically thinned out as well and all of my hair strands have become very fine.

You do not want to experience accelerated hairloss from finasteride. It is a nightmare from which there is no escape.

My negative response to finasteride is not typical but what happened to me can happen to anyone. I started on 1.25 mg for 16 months and lowered it to .5 mg for six months and nothing bad happened, it was only when I went down to .25 mg that all hell broke loose.

I am saying this because even I was able to maintain on .5 mg after experiencing accelerated hairloss on 1.25 mg, so anyone should be ok on .5 mg.
