Long Hair on Propecia. minoxidil, Laser Comb, etc...

After reading hundreds of posts on various forums, I have a question. What about guys with long hair who are trying to prevent further hairloss. What I mean is, I hear so much about seasonal shedding on Propecia that is makes me not want to stop. For instance, if we shed EVERY year on the same month, I would have to have shorter hair, because it takes years for a hair to grow.

Basically, at this point, I have hair about 4 inches past my shoulders. I noticed hair thinning last year and ever since have been taking Saw Palmetto daily, drinking Green Tea, and using the Laser Comb. For what I can tell, my hair looks the same as it did about a year ago. Looking at unprofessional pictures, it's hard to tell sometimes, but no one else can tell I am having a thinning problem. I have straight long blond hair and one reason I want to maintain it is because I am in the music business and as shallow as it may sound, bands don't get signed because of image sometimes. I want my hair for personal reasons, but I also don't want to have a balding musician on a press kit photo. Vain, I know!

I was supposed to start Propecia in Sept. to try and thicken up the very front of my hair line a bit and my part, which is slightly wider than it was 5 years ago. My fear is that when I start Propecia, all the sudden all my hair will fall out and I will have to have short hair forever.

Please, someone help me here. Does taking propecia affect my hairs NOT affected by DHT yet? I have never seen this question answered. Can I still have long hair while on Propecia? Thanks in advance!

I would have to say that question will be a hard one to answer. Let me think on this. My opinion upfront...............yes you will probably end up with short hair, but let me think. :)

If you are thinning and developing male pattern baldness then your best chance to slow this process or stop it is finasteride, as it addresses the underlying problem (DHT). If you are counting on regrowth then the addition of minoxidil may be needed, but only you can decide if you are ready for that step.

I personally never experienced shedding due to a treatment. I think people often start treatments at times when their hair is already getting worse and blame their treatment for that process which was already in progress when they started treatment. Despite what is posted here (people come here when treatments aren't working, so you won't find the happy ending stories here) it is male pattern baldness that causes norwood style hair loss... not minoxidil or rogaine.

I wouldnt let the idea of a possible shed keep me from starting treatment if it was needed. I also wouldnt wait until it was aggressively shedding (treatments wont stop it immediately) or needed a lot of regrowth to look good (treatments are better for maintenence than regrowth).

Thanks for the replies. For starters, I made a TYPO. I meant to say, hearing all this about seasoning shedding makes me not want to START Propecia, not stop. I haven't started it yet. I also am not counting on regrowth, I just want to stop the loss. Up front it looks the thinnest on my head, but I'd say I am a NW1.5 (which I have been my entire life, I've always had a big forhead). I look at pictures from years ago and you can't tell a difference unless you are REALLY trying to find it. If I maintain what I have, I think I will be in good shape. If my front gets any worse, I then may have a problem with others noticing. My girlfriend can't really even tell.

I just hope that starting propecia doesn't make all of my good hair that is over a foot long fall out and grow short 3 inch ones in return. Again, thanks for the replies, keep em coming. I need opinions.

If you start Propecia or even minoxidil, chances are the follicles that are genetically predisposed to male pattern baldness are gonna fall out and restart the growing process, hopefully with thicker hair. Are you sure you couldn't find a different hair style? Some of the musicians I have seen have funky styles but not long. :)

I have considered other hair cuts, but it isn't in my interest right now. I am wanting to see what I can do with this. I mean, why is it called maintainence if your hair HAS to be short for it to work? I don't want to have 2 inch hair, then go bald once a year because all my hair that would have eventually thinned due to male pattern baldness falls out every year. I thought from Propecia's site that it keeps the hair you have, meaning, I'd look like I do now in 5 years.

Sorry about all the questions, it's just hard to know what's up when you hear so many different things. Anyone else have any comments? Can you have long hair on propecia?

Okay, well maintaining I believe is meant to mean that it'll help keep your hair from being affected by DHT, but anytime you start treatment, like Propecia or minoxidil, or anything that is going to affect the follicle, you will go through a shed. But that doesn't necessarily mean that ALL the hair is going to shed at once. Actually when you shed it means that your treatment is actually working. But, in your case, since you want to keep the long hair, I just don't know what to tell ya :( . The only thing you could probably do for now would be some good shampoos that thicken your hair. They actually don't thicken it, it makes it appear thicker and with more volume. That also means that it won't stop your male pattern baldness from happening. I just don't know what to tell ya man. I am sorry. Maybe someone can tell you some info that I don't know and perhaps help ya. Goodluck :)

ok this musician guy needs to really think here--from my experience minoxidil will either make you shed, speed up your already bad shed, or not cause you to shed at all...if your shed is really bad its going like no tomorrow(been there doen that) minoxidil will make your shed worse-temporarily--then things will die down--so if you wait for an awful shed--you will ultimately have to wait longer for the minoxidil to slow it down-in my experience---but all of your hair doesnt come out--in other words if u stat minoxidil when your hair is 6 inches--youll notice thinning from the minoxidil induced sheds but overall your hair will still be long--youll just have those hairs that were shed coming in healthier adn those will be short--your whole head of hair is not goign to go from 6 inches to half an inch over night or over a period of time unless you cut it all--and generally--long hair on baldng men may help conceal those receding hairlines but looks super straggly and thin on top--so if you can use a hair loss concealer like toppik in addition to minoxidil and propecia then your long hair in the back wont look as bad---im growing mine out to conceal my hairline and using toppik in the back to make it look thicker--but if your hair loss is too severe as it is, and you choose not to use a hair loss concealer--then generally longer hair looks bad on men with thinning hair--who cares if youre a musician--plenty of musicians shave their head and ive even seen some who shave almost all of it but leave the front longer--ive gone that route--completely bald to a 1 on the electric razor and an inch of hair at the front--lol..if you wanna keep your hair use minoxidil if u wanna go slick bald eventually worry about makign sure very hair on your head is the same length-thats the sorry reality of it--id say leave your hair length as it is, get on minoxidil 5%, and buy some toppik to conceal those bad areas, or if youre anti-toppik, buzz it off or go buzzcut style..cuz the longer it is on a thinning scalp the worse it looks

Wow dude, just asking questions. I am being misunderstood here though. I don't want to use minoxidil, I probably won't because I hear it's messy. I want to use Propecia however. Currently I'm using the Lasercomb and Nizoral. You are right about musicians having shaved heads, etc, but I am very attached to my long hair. Girls also dig my hair because it is very "pretty (and I don't mean that in a gay way)." I think short hair looks stupid on me. It did when I was a teenager and it would now as well. Longer hair works great at covering receding temples for people, but looks like crap on top if your hair is in really bad shape. The point I was making was this:

I have a LOT of hair. No one can tell I am losing it but myself. I wanted to make sure that if I started a treatment I wouldn't shed all of it because SOME people act like they do. I am trying to maintain what I have left and the question I was asking is would treating my hairloss allow me to style my hair as I wish or would the cycles of shedding be too much for me. Everyone here seems to not understand that I want LONG hair maintaince, not short hair. I don't want to have a head of pubic hair! If I were to cut my hair short, I would assume be bald, it wouldn't make a difference to me then. Not trying to be an *** here, I just had some questions about hairloss because every time I see a picture of something on hair treatment programs, they all have very short hair. I wanted to find out if it would work on someone like me. Thanks for replying however, I appreciate it.

hi jonny

I'm a woman and I can tell you it definitely sucks having long thinning hair... I have shoulder length hair and now I have a lot of really short regrowth and it looks silly and makes my hair stick up and my scalp more visible. but I also don't like short hair on myself so it is just a LONG waiting game for all the pieces to grow in. I envy men whose 1 inch regrowth is just blending right in. meanwhile I am trying to camouflage with layers. good luck

hey i understand-im gay so its all good--and were super finicky about our looks--so imagine how it is for me at 23 to be a norwood 3/4ish without toppik and a norwood 2 with it..thank you toppik, i still get laid lol when their pillows are black who cares done em did em lol ...heres the deal---i mean no offense at all--but to decide against minoxidil would be utterly stupid...especially if you want to see any regrowth---if no one can tell that youre balding maybe you should wait a couple of years for the propecia so its a lose in the beginning/slightly win in the end situation for any of these treatments-are you sure your hair loss isnt as bad as you think it is? im starting to get that "longer" hair style myself-you knwo the ashton kuchner whatever his name is style-on top...it does a really good job at hiding my norwood 3 hairline-the thing with male pattern baldness is your hair either needs to be very short or very long to mitigate your hair loss in order for it to look good-if you cut your hair tomorrow, you may see that its actually worse than it currently looks. the longer you wait or every time you go off minoxidil it will take that much longer to get back to being nearly close to your good ole hair days--and the longer you wait the more likely it will keep your nearly slick bald spots(i dont call myself shinyscalp 23 for nothing lol) from thickening up... and the worse the cosmetic damage from the sheds--since you already have alot of hair, the sheds wont do as much cosmetic damage--the thinner your hair, the worse it will look from the sheds--and if you wait too long, it may just thicken up your existing hair, without doing much to the noticeable ba(l)d areas-im personally seeing a combination of both, cosmetically what i had to begin with looks thicker, but those bad areas that still look bad are slightly smaller than they were 4 months ago. your expectations of these drugs should be seen in terms of maintenance and alittle regrowth at best--with all the sheds that you may go through, you have a 70 % chance of just maintaining what you have with alittle regrowth--but all that will be dependent on one or 2 of these drugs eventually---... if your hairs not bad now, better off getting it minoxidil dependent now-sooner or later its gonna go, and if you do get cocky and quit after 4 months, you will not have lost or mainatined that much to worry abou tto begin with..its subjective--and your expectations of these drugs must be realistic--most of us are in a situation where were maintaining not so great hair as it is--most of us already have noticeably, severe thinning that we want to keep from getting any worse---we either got cocky and stopped our minoxidil and or propecia in the past or listened to our mothers say that they cant see it they cant tell lol..youre in a good situation to go through temporary severe shedding but maintaining your current state 6 months to a year down the line--ive been losing my hair since im 16--if i let the genetic time clock do its thing id probably lose all my hair by 30--and i had my most severe hair loss this year at age 23--the dht animal is fighting a very good battle--if you dont use minoxidil a terrible shed could occur at any particular time, and you lose a 1/3 of it in a year--male pattern baldness is both gradual and sudden for many people--im losign my hair but before this year i only experienced bad shed when i was 18, 5 years later with that much less hair, it snuck up on me to catch up for lost time..youre better off shedding like a mofo now from minoxidil than possibly shedding like a mofo from nature--and looking the same as you do now a year later and keep yourself on minoxidil--and most dr's will probably recommend minoxidil to you over propecia--for some reason many drs prefer prescribing maintenance drugs like propecia when its too late to make much of a cosmetic difference..and any regrowth is best attained by minoxidil and not all minoxidil is messy--if you get it combined with retin-a it dries in 20 minutes as opposed to the greasy crap you get in the stores--then again if youre situation isnt that bad, you may just have to use minoxidil 2% which isnt greasy at all--and fyi--the first time i used minoxidil (5%)i had absolutely no shedding-as a matter of fact--not a single hair that was noticeable came out--first thing mom said was i dont see ANY hair on the bathroom floor--the second time i used minoxidil but with retin-a i was already severely shedding at the end of 04 and within 2 weeks of using it, it completely stopped my shedding, i stopped using it and started sheddign like a mofo 2 months later, and then restarted minoxidil/retin-a and then the sheddign didnt slow down for 2 months (it still hasnt completely stopped on month 5) --also keep in mind that many of us vain men worried about our hair freak out when we lose two hairs from the top after touching it--which is normal--we think that we dont even have enough to keep losing even that much--and for those of us that have and continue to shed from the treatments, sometimes we flip out, because we dont have that much on top--but heres the thing--most of us have more than we think..it looks bad but theres still hair up there--i wouldnt worry about it, if i were you id stay away from propecia and get on minoxdil 2%, which doesnt cause that much shedding--basically the stronger the minoxidil the worse the shedding from the treatments and the worse the sheddign when you get off the treatment but to not use minoxidil is stupid, just ridiculous--it has more promise in terms of regrowth and it will actually help you to grow your hair faster and is most appropriate for people who stil have alot of hair-and msot drs would probably tell you the same thing

Thanks for the post. I am sure it doesn't look worse than I think because I can't even convince my family I am losing my hair, even when they look at it and I am telling them that I am. It doesn't run in my family, which really sucks, because I seem to be the only one ever on either my mom or dad's side that is having this problem. The main problem for me is that my middle part is a little wider than it used to be and my front has thinned. My temples are slightly receded, but it's that noticeable in a pony tail. My main thing area on me is my VERY front center. It is driving me crazy.

You are the first person I have ever read a post from that recommended minoxidil over propecia. When I say I have long hair, I don't mean Ashton Kutcher, I mean more like Bo Bice or Triple H. It is a few inches past my shoulders and it would seem to me that putting greasy minoxidil would make my hair look terrible. If I only would have to do it at night, that would be one thing, but doing it in the morning would SUCK. I still may give it a shot, but I have the idea of starting Propecia because I have heard so much about it, and it's simple...one pill a day. My derm recommended that over minoxidil. I am also using the Laser Comb, which I like so far (it's been 5 months) and I just started Nizoral. My scalp feels great. Hairloss is so frustrating because you hear SO many different ideas about how to treat it. Thanks go to everyone responded to this, because you are all making me think, and I appreciate it. Peace!

Here are pictures of me over the years to somewhat document my hairloss. Check them out and tell me what you think and how you think I may fair from treatments. I did the best I could with these, I may add more later. You will see what I mean by the statement that most people can't tell I am balding. I also took the last few at night when my hair looks it's worse. I just wanted to post these to see what people think I may be able to accomplish at my current stage. Here is the link:

Dude, I looked at your pics and to tell you the truth I can't really see anything wrong as far as comparing everything. I am not saying you are not losing or thinning, just saying your hair looks fine to me. But since you say you are losing then looking into treatment would be good idea, just don't know what to use. If I have any ideas, I'll share them with you.

jonnybb, your hairloss is almost exactly the same as mine, where it seems to be diffusing a bit at the top, but not enough for anyone else but you to notice.

Anyway, IMO if you had that hair for the next 5 years you'd be golden, and maintenance is what Propecia is known for. Everyone's propecia results story will be different, but the fact is that a large number of people, despite what you may read on these forums, will benefit from it.

As far as the shedding is concerned, I would imagine minoxidil would be more likely to cause a shed, since it kicks the follicles into the anagen phase; thus, if a group of hairs at various stages in the telogen phase are subjected to minoxidil, they would theoretically all shed and regrow at the same time.

BTW could you give us an update if you see any improvements with your regimen? I've been interested in the potential of the Lasercomb, but I have yet to hear anything positive about it from posters who actually document their progress.

Thanks and good luck.

If you're 100% sure you're thinning just take Propecia. It doesn't have a magical "you will have to cut your hair short effect".

It will delay the thinning.

For starters, thanks to the guy for telling me to make sure the music is good first. It is, trust me. The thing about the music biz is that anything can hold you back and we are covering all angles. We have been writing some great tunes, now recording them. We got photos coming up and they must be great as well. I tell you, it's sad, but it's all about image these days...blah blah.

I have enjoyed using the lasercomb. I can't tell fur sure what it has done, but if you look at my pictures from July 2004 to now, my hair looks pretty much the same (how much different should it be in one year's time)? I think that it is doing something, but I'm can't say for SURE just yet. I want to give it a year before I say if it was worth it or not, and it's been about 6 months now.

I am going back to the derm in Sept. and probably starting Propecia then. If I hang on to my hair, I will be happy. IF, by chance, some of my thin ones come back better, I will be even happier, but hanging on to it is the main goal for now. Peace.
