Looks like balding is related to smoking

Well, if A1AD wasn't a reason for me to stop smoking over 10 years ago, I guess balding would be another. Nevermind that it's just overall detrimental to your health.

ALright then, everyone on this forum who is a balding smoker, quit smoking and then let me see your regrowth.

Not smoking isnt going to bring your hair back. Smoking isn't going to make you go bald.

Correlations don't mean a thing, unless you can prove that there is a defintive link.

To me, this just seems like another delusional form of fleeting hope. You are balding, not because you SMOKE, not because you DRINK, not because you have Telogen Effluvium, not because your hair has always been thin and suddenly it just begins to recede, not because your DIET IS LACKING IN IRON, not because your SHAMPOO is washing away the sebum in your scalp, not because you sleep with your hair buried in your PILLOW, not because you shaved it a month ago and now it WONT GROW BACK, not because YOU WORE A TIGHT CAP, not because you overdosed on ACCUTANE and now your hair WONT GROW BACK at all, not because you are STRESSED, not because you got into a fight and someone PULLED YOUR HAIR HARD, not because of YOUR HAIR GEL...etc

You are balding because its in your genetic code. The sooner you can admit that, the sooner you can actually start treating your GENETIC BALDNESS problems, and not your smoking, drinking, cap wearing, accutane swollowing, shampoo using, iron deficient problems.

Most of those things contribute...stopping them probably wouldnt give you cosmetically acceptable results but it'd help a bit...let me give you a more clear cut example...let us say your genetic code programs for extreme obesity...your fat cells cling onto every single calorie and just store and store energy when they dont need it. HOWEVER by modifying lifestyle around the genetic code...you live a different lifestyle BECAUSE of the genetic CODE but your actions allow you to bypass it. You see genes dont code for "BALD or FAT" they code for...conditions that give rise to your phenotype (physical outside self)...will you be fat if you fight your genetic code the right way? Probably not. The point is though that McD will affect u more if you have that DNA built in..just like smoking MAY if you have the male pattern baldness gene...and other genes that destroy ur hair roots because of the chemicals you input...remember your body is a factory...w.e. u input it processes. Something I can think of is that smoking destroys blood cells right..so maybe the decreased nutrients somehow starve it. BTW my dad is a smoker and hes like a Nw3V so hes doing much better then his dad who was Nw6 @ age 35...bu my dad was FULLY grey by age 30...so that should tell u something. Also to the people who say that circulation isnt an issue cuz if u cut ur scalp ull bleed. Guess what...ppl who are impotent will bleed too if u cut their dick...there has to be blood there otherwise the tissue would die...but the fact is its NOT enough.

My father: smoking since he was 12. 2-3 packs a day now. He became a Norwood 2 at 20, and has since stayed there with no loss at all except for greying. He is 62 now.

heh my grandad smoked all his life and died with a thick, white nw2.

though it's great to hear about your respective relatives and their hairlines, it really isnt relevant to the discussion as it is simply anecdotal evidence and therefore worse than useless. misleading at best.

want more?

Best friend: NW0. Smokes all of the time.
19 year old girl I know: 2packs a day, no loss or weird hair texture.
Me: Very rarely smoke. Began losing it before I even had my first cig.

Maybe cigs in certain individuals do in fact weaken hair in some way accelerating the effects of male pattern baldness much like living in LA for a year makes certain individuals magically develope cancer when they have so far been living amazingly healthy lives.

Fact is, I highly doubt smoking or being exposed to smoke has any "major" impact on the hairloss process.

so you provide more useless anecdotal evidence... what was the point there?

Association between smoking and hair loss: another opportunity for health education against smoking?

Trüeb RM.

Besides being the single most preventable cause of significant morbidity and an important cause of death in the general population, tobacco smoking has been associated with adverse effects on the skin. Smoke-induced premature skin ageing has attracted the attention of the medical community, while only recently an observational study has indicated a significant relationship between smoking and baldness. The mechanisms by which smoking causes hair loss are multifactorial and are probably related to effects of cigarette smoke on the microvasculature of the dermal hair papilla, smoke genotoxicants causing damage to DNA of the hair follicle, smoke-induced imbalance in the follicular protease/antiprotease systems controlling tissue remodeling during the hair growth cycle, pro-oxidant effects of smoking leading to the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines resulting in follicular micro-inflammation and fibrosis and finally increased hydroxylation of oestradiol as well as inhibition of the enzyme aromatase creating a relative hypo-oestrogenic state. In view of the psychological impact of androgenetic alopecia on affected men and women, increasing public awareness of the association between smoking and hair loss offers an opportunity for health education against smoking that may be more effective than the link between smoking and facial wrinkles or grey hair, since the latter can be effectively counteracted by current aesthetic dermatologic procedures, while treatment options for androgenetic alopecia are limited. couldnt agree with you more.

Actually, accutane and stress feed directly into the biochemical pathway that is responsible for hair loss. Accutane increases TGF-beta and stress feeds into the TGF-beta pathway. Smoking induces premature skin aging, so it likely feeds into the same pathway, as well. As for alcohol and alcoholism, that would end up fitting under the heading of nutritional deficiencies, which would lead hair cycling problems.

You've actually posted reasons for both male pattern baldness to not only start, but for it to actually become accelerated.

People around here really like to defend the habits that help them identify their place in society. If you require habits to complete your personality, then you have problems. Take up a hobby instead.

..................a long time ago I read "somewhere" (I read alot and rarely remember where I read X or Y) that smoking decreased the amount of oxygen in blood. I know if does "something" to melanocytes, because smokers get that darkened ashen skin after years of doing it and alot more wrinkles in their faces.

Nothing about smoking is good for anyone. It just makes a few people very wealthy on the other end
