Losing Ground On Finasteride - Replace W/ Duta Or Just Add Duta?

Hi all,

30 years old and been on 1.25 mg finasteride for about a dozen (!) years. Started young due to genetic paranoia and a "five-head."

I'm still doing okay, NW2 but over the course of the last three months seeing thinning in the front that has me scared I'll be NW2a/3 before long. Lots of shedding in shower and via obsessive "checking" with hands.

I'm not interested in applying minoxidil to my regimen. Recommitted to using Nizoral every other day religiously. I've considered upping dosage of finasteride to 2.5 mg, but GP has also given me script for .5 mg dutasteride.

My question - completely replace finasteride with dutasteride or incorporate dutasteride into my regimen (i.e. every other day, etc.)?

Thanks for any and all feedback.

Theoretically continuing it with finasteride should make no difference than doing it alone, but some people say otherwise. I am starting dutasteride as well. I am planning on just doing duta every other day and dropping finasteride. May up my dosage to daily, will see how I react to the drug. Also increasing the finasteride dosage to 2.5mg will most likely do nothing as it suppresses almost the exact same amount of DHT.

Dutasteride is all you need if finasteride isn't effective enough for you.
Drop the finasteride. Take Dutasteride 2.5mg 3x a week.

@nicksparrow, interested in your comment regarding taking Dutasterdie 2.5mg for 3x a week. I've been taking it 0.5mg every day. Did you start off with 0.5 every day and then move 2.5 3x a week?

I did every other day at first. with .5mg, for a week before upping it. Just to test it out. side effects wise and such.

How's it going so far?
Had to stop early because of mild gynecomastia forming. Took a month break to reduce/eliminate it. Then resumed two days ago but taking Raloxifene everyday as well to prevent/reduce this side effect. Can't say what effect it has had on my hair. Will post an update in 2 months. :)

Thanks for all the responses.

Yes, I used foam minoxidil but only very briefly and a long, long time ago. I can't speak to its results. At the time I was worried it was causing me to lose more hair.

I have the script for dutasteride but am holding out on having it filled for the time being -- I began to wonder if this current shed, which seems to be located primarily in the front, is perhaps telogen effluvium.

I have lost a significant amount of weight from dieting and exercise since January as well as gone through a very stressful period (personal problems) in that same time.

Perhaps this shed is a delayed reaction to those factors? Is there a way to try and tell if this is indeed telogen effluvium (w/out going to a doctor)? If it is telogen effluvium, could I expect these hairs I'm losing to eventually regrow?

Thanks again.

Where did you order Dutasteride from if your taking 2.5mg, that must be very expensive

Actually someone posted a thread awhile back as there was something finasteride did that dutasteride did not do DHT wise. Someone had a condition which was caused by high DHT and dutasteride was ineffective treating patients with the problem, whereas finasteride worked. Ill try root it out but we are going back 3-4 months.
