I am 19 years old and realizing that I am loosing hair and have been for the last couple months. My hair is thining and receding at the temples. My dad is bald and I really dont want to look like him, at least not this young. I just picked up some rogaine and have been using it for a week. I think i am going to make a doctors appointment for a prescription of porpecia. Think rogaine/ propecia will be effective on my thinning hair and receding hair line?

LOL! like the picture, you look like a regular bunch of thugs!

male pattern baldness (if indeed you have any) would be very controlable at that stage.

ya bro i am in the same boat as you. I am 19 and have been thinning and receding similar to your own. It sucks, it wouldn't bother me if I was 29, but 19 is just too young. Anyways, I have been on Propecia for 9 months. Since I started my hairline has gotten worse. Before I started using it my hair was thick up front, now it is considerably thinner not to mention it has decreased my sex drive quite a bit. If I could do it over again, I would probably have just used rogaine. Anyways, just wanted to let you know I am in the same boat. The decision is up to you.

I believe it would... Agreed, it is harder to loose hair younger, but at 29, 39 or 49 you are kind of accoustomed to having hair. It's a hard pill to swallow at any age. The truth is, you won't feel any older or more deserving of hair loss in 10, 20 or 30 years. Hopefully, though, by then you might have a little more experience and perspective, and be able to see that there is more your life than a hairline.... That sounds like the wise, mature thing to say, but in my later thirties I have to say that it still sucks, im still not ready, and I'm still way too young for this crap....

Good luck to all you guys... fight the good fight, start treatments early, dont be afraid to use multiple treatments, and give them time to work.

I've been a reg on hairloss boards for damn near a year now. I can tell you the best thing you can do at this point is the following:

1. Finasteride (Propecia/Proscar). Propecia and Proscar are exactly the same drug: Finasteride. The difference is one comes in 1mg (Propecia) while the other comes in 5mg (Proscar). What men do to save money is to either get their doctor to write them a prescription for Proscar or, if they are being pecker heads, buy it online. Then they cut the pill into 1/4ths (pill cutter or razor will work) and take 1.25mg daily or every other day.

One bottle of Propecia will run $50 - $60 USD and will last one month. This comes to $600 - $720 per year. One bottle of Proscar will run $90 USD but will last for 3 months costing only $30 USD per month. This comes out to be $360 per year. You can cut this figure in half if you take Finasteride every other day which works just as well!

2. Nizoral 2% shampoo. There are only two shampoos worth a damn when it comes to male pattern baldness. Nizoral 2% and nano. Nano is more of a thickening shampoo with properties similar to minoxidil (rogain) while Nizoral is more similar to Finasteride as it is more of a hair saving shampoo. In the US you can buy Nizoral 1% over_the_counter which should be nearly as good as the 2%. I recommend getting the 2% however as it cost nearly the same! In the US you'll either need a prescription or you can buy in from Canada via the Internet where the 2% is over_the_counter (no prescription necessary!).

With Nizoral 2% (or 1%) you only need to use it every 3 days. On days you use it you should first wash your hair with your reg shampoo and rinse. Then apply the Nizoral and let it sit for 5 - 10 mins. Then rinse and go about life :)

3. Minoxidil. Minoxidil is great for getting some regrowth/thickening. It is VERY IMPORTANT to note minoxidil does not save your hair! Finasteride saves your hair by reducing DHT which, in turn, can allow the hair to heal up a bit and repair itself (although not 100%). Minoxidil on the other hand does nothing for DHT. Minoxidil has a chemical effect on your hair that induces it to grow thicker and to cause dormant hair follicles to grow again. The results are cosmetic in the sense that once you stop minoxidil all your results will disappear. Being that minoxidil works via the hair's response to minoxidil ONLY MINOXIDIL CAN MAINTAIN MINOXIDIL'S RESULTS. You cannot maintain minoxidil's results with Finasteride or any other drug.

Finasteride and minoxidil have an synergetic effect and they work well together. However, Finasteride is the more important of the two as it and only it actually saves your hair by stopping DHT from destroying it.

Some men who dont know better will claim Finasteride (or any treatment for that matter) will make their hair worse. This is not true and to date no man has provided any pictorial evidence of this occurring. male pattern baldness causes hairloss not Finasteride. If you continue to lose hair on Finasteride you would have lost that hair anyway. Finasteride doesnt work for everybody and it may not 100% stop male pattern baldness by itself. In the vast majority of men it will save your hair and greatly slow the progression of male pattern baldness if not outright stop it. Myself and many others have had great success on Finasteride and Nizoral and I highly recommend it for any guys who has male pattern baldness.

Finally, dont be scared off of finasteride cause of crazy side-effect reports! Only 2% of men get sides but, of those 2% of men who get sides, all of them seem to come here

This makes it seem like side-effects are nasty and common when it fact that almost never happens. When they do they are usually mild and go away within a few weeks or 2 or 3 months at the most (small price to pay for your hair).

Anyhow, I hope this helps. If you have any questions let me know. Like I said, I've been doing this hairloss thing for a while and I've seen it all. I can give you the real low down on treatments without all the hype and exaggerated bullshit some guys will give ya.

Wrong. The way that Nizoral works on the scalp is actually very similar to Minoxidil.

Other than that, pretty much everything else was right on.

Well, I don't know if anybody really understands how minoxidil works. Initially it was thought that it increased bloodflow to the follicle, but I reckon this was discounted later.

Nizoral is an anti-fungal shampoo that contains an anti-androgen, ketoconazole, used specifically for controlling dandruff. Ketoconazole is a powerful anti-androgen when taken internally as a pill -- it is used as a form of chemical castration. By contrast, minoxidil does not contain any anti-androgenic properties as such.
