How bad is it? It's very bad, there is no hope for you. Start to panic, get in the foetal position and stick your thumb in your mouth and cry.

Finasteride inhibits 5ar type 2; 5ar type 2 is an enzyme that is responsible for reducing testosterone to DHT (although this is not its only function). DHT is important for sexual development.

TL;DR: If you are still going through puberty, you should not take finasteride because it can mitigate and disrupt your development as a man during puberty. Most people who are 18 are already finished with their sexual development, which is why 18 is the "safest" minimum age you can take finasteride.

Based on your pics, your anteriors have definitely recessed. Whether or not you will continue to recess is a question that I cannot answer; some people continue to recess (rapidly or gradually) at this point and some lucky others retain this hairline for another decade or so. If you are still hesitant of taking finasteride, I'd suggest you wait one year and closely monitor the condition of your hair. If your hair continues to thin, or shed during that allotted time, you should take that as a sign to go on finasteride.

Good luck.

18 is fine for finasteride i think, any age before that i'd question it. You should be developed downstairs by now lol. You're about a thick NW2 i reckon. Too thick to be a nw3 and the hair looks healthy. Derms know **** all most of the time. Biotin and finasteride. Maybe some rogaine on the missing temples. Just know that minoxidil will thin you out before it grows back though and in some cases (rare) the hair thins out and doesn't return. That was my experience on minoxidil but i understand that I'm a minority. Success stories on here with minoxidil are awesome, just wish i was that lucky.

You guys are losers and offer nothing to this forum

OP post a couple more pictures. Also post a before pic for comparison

I wish I could, but my hair covered my temples pretty well throughout my entire life. I've looked through old photos and none of them really tell me anything.

@lickawrist @Secretlybatman is it a good idea to just start taking minoxidil only and monitor before considering finasteride? Also, how does one even know if they're done with puberty? I'm a pretty big guy but I have little to no facial, back, or chest hair.

Yes, definitely start minoxidil--it won't hurt you. And if you have pubes downstairs, you're dick is pretty much done developing. And some people don't develop a full beard, or body hair until their late twenties to early thirties--it has nothing to do with the status of their sexual development.

Get on the big 3. Finasteride 1mg pill 1 x daily.
Minoxidil 2% and use nizoral 2% shampoo twice a week.
Make sure the minoxidil is applied to your scalp, since you have alot of hair it might prove difficult. You could also do minoxidil 5% instead of 2%. That's what I would tell you if I believed that you are suffering with AA.

But your hair does look fine and I can understand why your derm might think you are delusional.. You have not provided us with important information regarding if there are people in your family who have hair loss issues and also not shown us with before and after pics of your temple area. There could be other reasons beside DHT affecting your hair loss so anyone who as so far been playing 'bro-doctor' and telling you to take medication is a fool. Determining if you need medication is not as simple as providing us with a picture of your temple area with your hand forcing your hair back.

@lickawrist thanks, I'll look into

@megatron1234 I appreciate a lot what you're tellin me. In terms of other info, my father has a head full of hair, and I guess I'll look into my maternal side and grandparents. I don't have older photos that clearly show my hairline because of my hairstyle, and there are really thin hairs near my current hairline. I don't really shed much hair, but recently I have been noticing thin hairs around me- I don't know if this is a product of me just starting to notice hairs or actual shedding.
Yeah, I'm hoping it's not male pattern baldness, so thanks for the dose of reality. Should I talk to another derm or somethign? My GP said it was male pattern baldness>

Monitor your hair without obsessing over it,you could take a picture once a month at the same hair length, and then analyse if you are actually receiding and shedding.. Usually male pattern baldness comes from the mothers side. Derms aren't necessarily hair loss specialists...

I wish that was true but my father is balding and so am I, all men from my mothers side have had strong, thick hair till their 50/60s.

OP: your hair looks fine, in my opinion. :) Good luck, I hope your hair will remain that way, that'd be awesome!
