Main Factor: Age or Level of Hairloss

From what I understand, no decent doctor will give someone under 25 a hair transplant because there is a chance that person could lose so much more hair after the procedure that they would look terrible.

They want to know that you're hairloss is relatively stabalized, often asking people to try treatments for a year or so then come back. They don't want someone walking around with a terrible obvious hair transplant dragging their name through the dirt for anyone who asks... understandable!

I've also read that no one under NW3 should be getting a transplant. I'm not sure why this is. Will a doctor turn you down? Ok I could see if you were a NW2 with hairloss only in the temples. That's really not noticible or bad looking. But what about crown thinning on top of it?

I'm 21 and using proscar. Hopefully it will maintain my current situation for a good 5 years, at which point I will be old enough to be able to get a hair transplant. Finasteride is no miracle though, and I will probably continue to thin in my 20s. Will a doctor refuse to do a procedure until I've lost enough hair to be noticibly balding?

I'm thinking if I can slow down hair loss over the next 5-7 years then fill things in with a rather small amount of grafts in the crown and up front later on, I would be *happy* overall with my hair situation.

Do you think I have to wait until my hair loss is quite bad to be able to get hair transplant even if I'm old enough?

(which makes me think- that would suck because if you have to wait until your hairloss is rampant and then you come back with almost total coverage it's going to be SO obvious what you did. It would be so much better to start out with thinning hair using a concealer or something for a few months, take vacation and get the hair transplant, come back still using concealers, then just stop using them.)

Anyone with experience dealing with hair transplant surgeon psychology have any input?

I think there are Surgeons out there that will give a transplant to someone under the age of 25, but as you say your hair could get a lot lot worse over time and you would look like a fool.

I would wait until you are at least 30 - 35 before considering anything. I may do something next year, but only if I can maintain what I have. I need filling in at the temples but that's about it really. Then my hair would look great again.

This is the sort of thing that angers me.

Why would anyone want to wait until they are 30? When their life is practically over.

The idea of getting a hair transplant, for me, is so I can live my early 20's like a normal guy that age.

If I was losing my hair when I'm nearer 30, I'd be making less fuss about my situation. I know that for a fact.

Personally, I'm 24 now.

My hairloss has held me back so much.

It's wrecked my appearance so much that the difference for me having at least half normal hair, would be massive.

Massive.

My, my, spoken like, well, a true teenager. <g> I guess my life has been "practically over" for 18 years now. :)

Saying age 30 is the end of life is a bit rash, but I agree that at that point so many more guys have hair loss that it's not nearly as big of an issue.

Sure there are some guys who will *never* be able to accept hair loss, but the majority of us guys in our 20s aren't pissed because we're vain, it's because hair loss at our age is less common and makes us seem old. Girls our age are shallower than older women. They want a good looking dude they can show off, like an accessory. Sure some girls want real relationships, but many are just having fun. Sure they might date a few older guys with good jobs, money, and a cool car, not minding some hair loss. But all us college guys are poor, so looks matter a lot.

This only decreases with time, as we become better candidates for a hair transplant.

Thats back asswards man!

For youngs guys it's more important because everyone around us is young looking and we aren't. At 30, everyones has aged a little, it's a bit easier to live with. That's a good post right there.

And as for the idea that my hair will look silly when i'm older if a I get a transplant done young? Oh no, my hair will look crap and patchy in a differnet sort of way to all the other bald guys whose hair looks crap and patchy, damn.

Oh wait, I was going to shave it anyway.......

I hardly think 30 is the end of life, however waiting until you are 30 to have a hair transplant is a waste of life.

Imagine you are an 18 year old woman with absolutely no boobs and someone told you that you should wait until you are 30 to have a breast implant because the hormones in the body need to stabalize due to a chance that they could make the breasts totally uneven in the future. Would you wait 12 years to have the implants? Meanwhile looking like you have a teenage boy's chest, not being able to wear a swim suit, being depressed,etc..
