It really does make the hair thinner for a week if you go really hard. I had a crazy session last week where I went ham on my scalp. My hair started to appear noticeably thinner since then. I believe this is because the wounding and flaking gives the scalp a more bright appearance, and that contrasts with the dark hair. Or maybe it's just shedding.

That's some information I wanna put out there.

I got the Derminator 2 and just used it for the first time on:
  • Medium Speed
  • 1.5mm Depth
  • 9 Needle Cartridge
I used the 9 needle cartridge because it came with the Derminator 2 so I thought if I'm going to be using the 12 needle cartridges moving forward I might as well use the 9 needle cartridge my first time in case anything goes wrong. Nothing did, fortunately.

Some observations:
  1. I have used a dermaroller (off Amazon) in the past - the Derminator 2 blows away a dermaroller and just made me instantly realize I probably wasn't doing sh*t all with the dermaroller.
  2. Anything at or less than 1.0mm didn't seem to bother me or draw any blood at all.
  3. On a level of 1 to 10, the pain was about a 5 or 6. Definitely discomforting, and leads me to believe 2.5mm must genuinely hurt.
  4. I noticed a lot more pain going over the "balder" areas of my head than the areas with hair. I buzz my head with no guard (0.25mm long, so like a 2 o clock shadow hair length) but have patches where hair is still coming in pretty full in terms of hair count. Going over the full areas with the Derminator 2 was a lot less painful than going over the balder areas quite literally 2 cm away. I have the little hair loss island (buzzed off, of course) but even going over that little patch was so much less painful than the balder areas right around it.
  5. I drew blood, especially from the balder areas.
  6. Aside from going over the balder areas, going over the part where the horseshoe and the bald part meet hurt the most.
  7. The front of my head hurt a lot more than the back of my head to do.
  8. The Derminator 2 is a great product!
If I get good results I will post them, for sure.

Using Minoxidil 1x daily, waiting 24 hours after needling. Not using finasteride due to sides.

great post. I would add on thing. People need to be aware that microneedling will enhance side effect potential of whatever topical you are using. So, if anyone is using a topical finasteride or RU58841 etc, just be aware that the potential is there with the increased absorption of the product.
I dermaroll twice a month, but skip my RU application afterwards and leave my scalp to heal for 24 hours before applying RU again. Do you think that this will greatly increase absorption?

I am doing the exact same thing. Needling twice a month and ru as topical (not on needdling nights ;) ) No sides yet to report. Do you use anything else? And do you have any improvements to report?

I dermarolled a few times before giving up on it and buying the derminator2. Only used the derminator2 once. I have used finasteride for almost 2 months and started the RU two weeks ago. I also use nizoral and minoxidil. Yes. It seems my hair has gotten thicker

I think we should still look into why wounding promotes hair growth in order to improve it instead of randomly needling.

Dermastamp arrived today. Does the redness go away in a few hours? Thinking if it's safe to do this tonight and be fine to go to work tomorrow.

Depends on the person I suppose. I’m usually a bloody mess afterwards, but the redness goes down significantly within a day or two. It’s easily noticeable the next day though (at least for me it is). This is what it looks like immediately afterwards. I guess there’s a reason microneedling is referred to as “wounding” and there’s definitely a healing process involved afterwards. It’s kind of like road rash or an abrasion of sorts.

It does indeed.
Me for example I don't get too red doing 6 passes while pushing down at 2 mm. Lotta blood spots but not much more than that.
You however look like you just had a transplant, haha.

Lol I look like a mess! What’s so great about microneedling though is that the punctures are so tiny that they heal up nearly overnight. 1-2 days max before the redness is 90% gone.

I also think the irritation might have something to do with one’s skin pigmentation. I’m fairly pale and get sunburnede/bruised easily. I’m guessing the extent to your redness/wounding might have something to do with that.

Just make sure you wear a hat and protect from sunlight for a few days if you do

Hiya,

Thanks for putting this together, is it very informative.

I have just recived the derminator 2 and plan to start using it bi-weekly, but I had a question about the whole sunlight avoiding thing. It's not that feasible for me to avoid the sunlight for a few days after needling, and wearing a hat is only really possible sometimes due to work.

Why is this recommended? What damage will the sun do to a post-needled head?

Thanks in advance!

How long will you be in sunlight? If you are walking from your house to your car or something along those lines, it shouldn't be a big deal. I assume you work outside?

Fast reply!

Not all day or anything like that, but I have to look presentable (i.e. not wear a hat) and be out in the sun for probably a couple hours a day on average. The 7 days of sun exposure coverage mentioned in the FAQ is definitely not possible for me.

I haven't been able to find anything speicfically mentioning why sun exposure is particularly bad (outside of the obvious damage that the sun does to the skin). Would sunscreen be OK to use on these areas perhaps?

Yeah. When I had surgery on my arm, my doctor told me to avoid sunlight and use sunscreen for a few months. Obviously this is a more extreme case than microneedling. If I were you, I would plan on doing it the day before you have a few days off. For example, if you have the weekends off, do it on the friday after you come home from work. I would avoid sunscreen on open wounds though so a day or two to heal would be ideal

I do have weekends off so I might try that this weekend - I do tend to avoid the sun a bit more on my days off anyway, so it might work.

Thanks for the advice!
