minoxidil dependence

I've heard a lot about this "minoxidil dependence" thing... Yet I haven't heard much about how it works... I figured that there're 2 ways of looking at this:

1) New hairs you've gained (offset growth) is reliant on minoxidil?
2) Some of the hairs that you still had before starting minoxidil (as well as any gains) will become reliant on minoxidil? (ie applying minoxidil makes hairs that were unaffected by male pattern baldness dependent on it)

Which is right? o_O

Different for everyone would be my guess

IM sure the general rule would be your "improvements" are dependent on it. So if you have been using it for 3 years when you stop theres a possibiliy itll look lik your hair has got worse since the time you actually started it but is more than likely just where it would have been otherwise.

It that makes sense to ya?

Yes it does. If that's indeed how it works, then I'm okay with that.

It's just that I had a 9 month stint with Rogaine but it gave me very itchy scalp (possibly due to PEG) and I was fearing that my healthy hair became dependent on it.

In any case I probably will be getting a non-PEG formulation minoxidil anyway after I assess my situation at the 1 year mark on finasteride. I just wanted to know what I should be expecting.

I cannot speak from experience but it's definitely a real thing; more so the hair you "grow" being reliant on it... some ppl get it more than others, that is LOSE it or revert back to when they started before using mino or even lose more hair - some not at all but I think not at all because they are on some kind of fint too...

That hair that is GROWN by minoxidil is dependant on minoxidil to continue growing. If you deprive them of minoxidil (which is a growth stimulant) they will quickly return to their pre-treatment state. It's a quick (not overnight, but you'll notice it) trip to where you WOULD HAVE BEEN if you had never used minoxidil.
